It's good to see a positive reaction to this, instead of all the whining and moaning that so many others have been doing. I have three questions about your new site:
1: Geocities has a strict policy of no "adult" material. Have you considered that until you move to your new domain, you will be forced into some of the same restrictions that ff.net imposed on itself?
2: Will you provide a review feature? FF.net has two things going for it - its wide audience, and reviews. The wide audience will hopefully come with time, but without the reviews, your site will be no different than a thousand other fanfic sites, and I assume you're trying for something that will rival ff.net and want it to be bigger and better than its peers.
3: Xing didn't remove celebrity-based fanfic because he was mean - he did it because the people involved contacted him and presumably were prepared to take legal action to get stories based on them removed. Are you prepared to face Hollywood lawyers, if it comes to that?
I'm not trying to be discouraging, I think this is a great idea. But consider what will happen if you succeed:
You'll have hundreds, maybe thousands of people e-mailing you complaining about how you're providing pornographic material to children. It doesn't matter that they should be watching their kids more closely while they're on the web, they'll blame you anyway.
You'll have Anne Rice and other authors contacting you asking you not to post fanfic based on her stories. Xing chose to abide by her wishes - what will you choose?
You'll have N*SYNC's high-priced legal team threatening to take you to court, where even if you win, you'll end up spending thousands of dollars on your own lawyers.
Finally, you'll have ungrateful fanfic writers screaming bloody murder every time a part of your site goes down for a half hour - never mind the fact that a site as large and complex as ff.net is bound to have its bugs. Crucial decisions that keep your site running will be met by whiny petitions claiming you're violating people's first amendment rights by not posting their stories on your site - never mind that the New York Times isn't publishing them either, and no one is accusing them of anything. (I'm not comparing you to these morons - like I said, I think your solution is the right way to go).
Anyway, there's some stuff to think about in case you haven't already. Good luck to you.
Basically our plan is: ~ to eventually move to a different host, after we get enough attention ~ only post real person -based fanfic so long as they have not complained about it before; once they do, it will be removed ~ ditto for authors like Anne Rice ~ and we are in the process of setting up a review section.
About the NC-17 complaints, we've been discussing what to do. right now the idea that's winning is to have and NC-17 mirror site with TONS of disclaimers. if people complain, all we have to do is point to the disclaimers and say "he/she/it/you/they knew beforehand, blame them" ~LEXI PS: and converting fics to html would be extremely helpful

Define "converting .. to html". HTML is almost a plain text language and there are tags to make something displayed in it's original form, not to mention you can use PHP or ASP and just automatically do whatever you want to these fics.
