Trent's Health

Trent seems to be coughing a lot in recent episodes. I don't recall this in earlier seasons. Perhaps they're planning something similar to "Jake of Hearts". Trent suddenly succumbs to a potentially life-threatening illness, forcing Daria to finally admit to him how she feels.

Trent has been coughing a lot from the very beginning of the show. This hasn't changed. Trent coughs a lot on the show...because he's a LOADIE. A HESHER. A STONER. A POTHEAD. They can't say it in so many words, but Trent smokes lots of weed. It's obvious. And apparently it's affecting his cognitive skills, because Trent gets DUMBER AND DUMBER with each episode.

In my fics from a long time ago, I explained his pulmonary problems by him being a preemie when born. However, that was me trying to rationalize it.

Face it, Trent likes to get blunted. He's "insane in the mem-brain." Trent doesn't "Just Say No." And that's a little something you'll never see confirmation of on the show because simply they'd catch tons of hell from the US Gov't if they did.

Don't worry about Trent's health. He'll never get Glaucoma, that's for sure. ;-)

I agree.

This has occurred to me. It's also occurred to me that Jesse may be even more of a pothead, or worse. I don't think that Trent is truly stupid: just overly impulsive and impractical. But Jesse acts close to retarded.

Both could be true, of course. Trent could be physically sick, _and_ a pothead, or worse. He doesn't look healthy at all, and never has.

Unfortunately, you could be right about this. Which is going to make it difficult for the writers: if they bring up the issue (because it affects his friendship with Daria in some way) they'll have to dance very carefully around it.

It's obvious (from that _second_ kiss) that Daria is _really_ attracted to Tom. That was so passionate I half expected him to take her right there in the car (well, not on-camera, and probably not all the way, but definitely beyond just kissing).

(Would have been a _bad_ place to do it though, they were parked right in front of her house).

I mostly expected Daria to break the clinch, though, which she did. One reason being that Tom hadn't broken up with Jane yet.

I don't think Daria is thinking much about Trent now. But I wouldn't count him out in the long run. I still think there's more worth to Trent than meets the eye.

_Transformers_ was a cutting-edge show in its times. For one thing, it was perhaps the first American TV animation since the genre got dumbed down in the late 1960's in which two characters not only fell in love, but married and had a child.

I definitely don't think the Trent issue can end so easily, since

He also looks really sad when he hears how animated their conversation has become. Now, of course, one reason he has to be sad that has nothing to do with any attraction he still has for Daria is his fear that _Jane_ will be hurt. Trent loves Jane more than anyone in the world, and Trent has probably also witnessed some Tom-Jane arguments so he may have already suspected that Tom was going to break it off.

Yes, but not _decisively_. Remember, it ended with her having a _second_ fantasy, in which Trent was rich, competent, and successful, and it had all been because she'd married him and changed him for the better (and I know that "changing" one's lover is a dangerous ambition, but note that it's apparently what Helen did with Jake, too).

Probably American puritanism at work here. For some idiotic reason, Americans expect TV characters to be "role models" and judge them accordingly. This has a chilling effect on the variety of TV, which is one reason that when a show like, say, _South Park_ or _Futurama_ deliberately violates this expectation, we love it.

It's a shame he's not a tobacco smoker, there's a whole host of dramatic diseases he could be hospitalised for, various cancers, heart disease, maybe the odd amputation.... admittedly such problems wouldn't normally set in until later in a smoker's life, but a little artistic licence could be used.

I think that I shall never see A billboard lovely as a tree. Perhaps, unless the billboards fall I'll never see a tree at all.

Gawd. What a wonderful list of "dramatic diseases" for a cigarette smoker to possibly eventually end up with. Great, this is exactly what I want to hear after puffing on a cancer stick. LOL. *wink*

(actually, I'm just joshing...and yes, I do smoke, but not anything nearing a pack a day or even a pack a week, and I *know* I shouldn't be doing that, but still...oh yeah, and what's weird is that I'm a total teetotaler when it comes to alcoholic beverages...hm...)

Technically, you do realize that this isn't even supposed to be the government's business? The government _made_ it their business through a very dubious reading of the First Amendment back in the late 20's or early 30's, in which it was decided that the First Amendment was meant only to apply to _print_ media, not the airwaves. Of course, LATER decisions semi-reversed that, but the status of TV, and whether or not the government has the right to regulate its content, is very much up in the air (legally speaking).

Historically, the TV stations have avoided the conflict by "self-regulation". Which is to say, not giving the Government an excuse to regulate their content by regulating it themselves, more sternly than most government censors would have.

Now, cable stations don't broadcast "on the airwaves." The Government has gotten away with regulating cable, though, which is why HBO was forced to stop showing outright X-rated movies. And even NC-17 movies, save at certain times of night.

I personally wish that the Supremes would just decide that regulating content is outright _wrong_, and say as much.

I suspect that the writers are anti-drug, but I've never seen them do anything serious in a "cheesy" fashion, so I don't think that they're gonig to do this in "after-school special" style.

Actually, I'm _beginning_ to suspect that if Trent does fail, it will develop that one of the reasons is drug use. (The bigger reason being his laziness). And that if he succeeds, it'll be because he was able to overcome both.

I could actually see this: Trent is lethargic (save for his bursts of musical activity, which probably take a lot of his total energy) and has a persistent cough. We don't know what else he has, but he's _never_ struck me as particularly healthy or physically strong.

I don't know if Daria would just out her feelings like that, but maybe Trent's illness would get her thinking about them.

Oh, congratulations to Martin on Outpost Daria remaining active.

Daria wouldn't gush, but she'd care. Even if we assume she's no longer attracted to Trent, she still _likes_ him.

I echo these sentiments. I think that this was a crucial point for Daria fandom: if MTV had killed OD, the show's fan base would have started to die.
