Season 3

Can anyone else believe that Season 3 is going to be another 4 months? What will we watch until then? I hope they'll make it more like season 1 instead of the all too sensitive 2. Or a combination of both. Who knows?

Help me out here, am I the only one who's about to freak out...

Nothing wrong with sensitive, IMHO. Shows that don't explore new things stagnate and die. Personally, I *want* to see Daria, et al. grow and experience new things (and the teen years is a ripe time for change and growth), and if that means tackling a few "sensitive" things, all the better for the realism.

I agree. Bringing a few dimensions into the show makes it more interesting. Personally I am interested in seeing how the developements of last season will effect this season. Like with the finale. How will the Daria/Helen relationship be dealt with now that Daria realizes that Helen understands her?

I always thought of season 1 as giving us 1 dimensional characters, and then season 2 gave them personalities.

A good example of a stagnant show IMHAHO (and I know I'll draw fire for saying this, but frankly I don't care) is The Simpsons. I'm not singling them out-- there are many other examples, but it's the one that came to my mind at first. (A good example of the Worst Offender is The Critic.) While they've put the characters in a ton of different situations, the characters haven't "grown." Evolved, yes, but grown, no. (There's a difference in my eyes.) Yes, the characters are drawn a little smoother, and the gimmicks are a little more outrageous, but Homer is still a moron, Bart is still an obnoxious little boy, LIsa is the "nerd," and Marge still refuses to deal with the reality that she married a moron, and caters to his every idiotic whim.

OTOH, the cool thing about Daria is that the characters aren't one-dimensional stereotypes (well, okay, some of them are, but they're the one-off characters). Character development is more entertaining in my book than any one-dimensional social satire run through a plot gimmick. WWIH is a great example of the creative forces behind the show trying to get the characters to mature, to grow, which is *extremely rare* on TV these days. (Hence the popularity of Daria.) Seeing Helen as a parent who screws up, but really does care about her children is more realistic, and makes her less two-dimensional. (And it helps to disprove the stereotype of lawyers as heartless bastards. Well, at least around their families. <g>)

Please note that I'm NOT saying that every ep has to be "deep," (that would get old too, after a while, I guess, and I never want to hear the phrase "very special" before an ep), but it's always enjoyable to learn more about the characters as the show progresses, rather than dumping all of the facts out in front of the viewers at the very beginning, and then fighting those restrictions. Where's the mystery after that? Nowhere. Once you know everything, it gets boring in a hurry.

As for what to do while waiting for Season 3, well, there's still Halloween, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving, the Holiday Season (insert Holiday here), New Year's, Boxing Day (Canada), MLK Day, Groundhog Day, and, yes, maybe even Valentine's Day to get ready for. Hurry, hurry, hurry! <g> Or, you could always start readin' one of them big books, like War N' Peace, er somethin'. Or maybe start one of them bansai trees, or a nice zen rock garden. You could redecorate! Or start building a small ship in a bottle....

You can always watch Celebrity Deathmatch. The only other MTV show worth watcg, although some BioRhythm's have been interesting.

Well you could use the time to to read some of the books that Daria has been reading. From all the references in the scripts and the books appearing on- screen it should make quite a reading list. Has anyone compiled such a list?
