Daria! the Musical comment

It was a hurricane that hit Lawndale, right? So that kind of answers the "where is Lawndale" question that has come up. If it was indeed a hurricane, Lawndale must be relatively close to either the Gulf coast or the East coast, inland areas aren't really affected by hurricanes (I know from personal experience, living inland in NJ when hurricane Gloria hit in the mid-80's). And as far as I'm aware, hurricanes don't occur in the Pacific. I could be wrong. Any thoughts?

Actually, hurricanes occur in the entire Pacific, but only in areas where the water is warm enough. (That's why California is never in any danger-- the water's too cold.) But hurricanes are very common on the West Coast of Mexico and Latin America, as well as in many Pacific Island areas. In the Far East, Hurricanes are referred to as Typhoons (Category 1-3) and Super Typhoons (Category 4-5). Hurricanes DO occur in the Pacific. Several months ago one hit California during the El Ni�o event.

Nevertheless there are California refugees who come to Tennessee to escape the unrelenting perfection that is said to exist in California. One thing they mention is that the commute to work only takes 5 minutes instead of 2 hours. Another thing I've frequently heard mentioned is that the mountains are green.

Anyway, isn't it nice that we live in a world where you can find just whatever kind of place to live that you like best?

NC. We got a close call with Bonnie last August, but it didn't do much more than rain and blow a lot. Now Fran was a nasty one (you could hear a few little twisters blow by-- lotsa destruction even far inland, but not as bad as Hugo was in Charlotte) ... I didn't have power for about a week (during a *very* hot September, even for the South), and some of my friends didn't have water for a week as well. And here's the kicker-- we live 3 hours from the coast. One of my friends on the coast didn't get to go home for *6 Months.*

Needless to say, I've had my fair share of 'cane experiences... It's fun, sorta, but it's also a RPITA. Actually, generators aren't really worth the trouble-- they're too noisy, and you can't store enough gas to keep 'em running for more than a day or two, and when the power goes out, it also goes out at the gas stations as well...

We're hoping that this season will be a bit better, but La Nina usually means greater 'cane frequency in the Atlantic. :P

BTW, these are all consistent with the "Lawndale, CT" premise. Maybe Michelle Klein-Hass is onto something... except there's no Carter County in Connecticut. <sigh> Its just a show, I should really just...oh, wait, wrong TV series.

Side note: despite what Michelle seems to think, it does indeed get hot in CT during the summer. Really hot. It often passes 100F and 80% humidity in July along the Gilded Coast. In fact, the weather in that area is uniformly lousy, except for a few weeks in early autumn, and the prevailing winds from the west and south mean it gets lotsa air pollution from NY and NJ as well. Now I remember why I left...
