I know TV shows take liberties with the passage of time. But surely a year hasn't passed since Tom and Daria started dating, has it? The usual rule is that one season = half-a-Lawndale-year.

Or does Daria want to celebrate the first anniversary of their first meeting? That COULD be a year ago, even though it's only 16, not 26 episodes. IIFY covered 3-4 months. And we can allow SOME time distortion in any case.

But, uh, wouldn't that be Tom and JANE's anniversary - if they were still together?

Any ideas about this?

Well, I'm not yet ready to join the doomsayers, but I'll admit this sounds more like something Brittany would do than Daria.

Yet it doesn't completely surprise me. We know Daria has some pretty traditional romantic ideas - remember her Trent fantasy in "Write Where It Hurts" and her last Trent fantasy in "Lane Miserables"? And her comparison of Tom's action against "Leo" in ILAP to throwing a cape over a mud puddle? Maybe celebrating anniversaries isn't so far-fetched a thing for Daria to do.

Nevertheless, the only anniversary that makes chronological sense is not that of their first date or first kiss, but their first meeting. But that was Tom's first date with Jane, not Daria. It's not Daria's to celebrate.

Isn't this going to open up the whole "you stole my boyfriend" thing with Jane again? Can you imagine Jane's reaction if Daria complains to her that Tom forgot "our (Daria and Tom's) anniversary":

"What do you mean, YOUR anniversary??? That would have been MY anniversary with Tom!!! You have my boyfriend, do you have to take my memories too???"

You get the picture?

I think Tom might associate that anniversary with Jane too, if he remembers it at all.

Well, let's remember that Daria has her own little way of getting angry, mostly subtly, am I right? It doesn't have to be an outburst (like the classic one in "DDMD!"), but perhaps in not saying anything to T(h)om, and after being confused, he begins to get the picture. Now, it's also possible this could be a dream sequence of some sort, maybe Daria mulling over the *possibility* of T(h)om forgetting the one-year anniversary, and how she'd react to it.

I'm also trying to read into what Michelle is actually posting here, since she holds the key in knowing wheter or not 'Daria' is getting a sixth season. So please, MK-H, post more of your opinions so I (or someone else) can formulate a possible cohesive conclusion. ;D Thanks.

I think the dream sequence idea doesn't seem so far-fetched. How long could they have been dating for the two of them to have an anniversary? It might connect with some possible insecurities Daria (or even Tom) has. And would Daria seriously get worked up over something like that?

Well, she didn't seem altogether pleased with the description. So I don't know how much "with" these changes she actually is.

Personally, if they're starting off the bat with relationship episodes I wonder how that's going to flavor the series.

Nevertheless, it's new Daria and I'll be watching it with the hope that it's going to be good.

The description says "first anniversary"--perhaps, however, it's not the one-year anniversary but one month or three months. Which, if they're becoming one of those sappy couples who celebrate monthly anniversaries, might be worse.

And yes, it does have possibilities, since I've seen both episodes now and they are very good episodes. Also, Bernstein seems to like writing about relationships, as both TRW and LM are about Daria's relationship with Trent, and now SA is about her relationship with Tom.
