Just to let you know that I'm back from my holiday in North Yorkshire. Did a bit of walking, a bit of gliding (managed not to crash the glider), had a go on a horse (managed not to fall off), and visited a good few heritage sites. Spent Eclipse Day at Rielvaux Abbey (or the ruins therof). Learnt a lot about life in Mediaeval England. Enjoyed some great pub meals, cooked breakfasts, and real ale. Ahhh.
And I don't believe I missed a new episode on C5, did I?
There were over 1100 new messages here in atd, so I scanned for any replies to my messages (thanks for the good wishes for the holiday, Michelle & Diane!) and for anything UK-specific, then "marked all as read."

i used to go horse riding... i was crap at it. they always gave me the really badly behaved horses as well. i remember once when i was about 8 years old, riding across a bit of flooded land... about 3ft of water... the bloody horse decided to LIE DOWN... lol. i got soaked... it was october and all..

One of the ag shows I went to on holiday had horse trials as part of the attractions. The sight of one determined girl valiantly kicking her horse at about 1.5Hz for ten seconds in a vain attempt to get it nearer to the gate she had to open will live too long in my memory. The judge intervened in the end.

<chuckle> No, I'm using an old Sony Mavica - the sort that records photos on a 3.5 inch floppy disk, and has an LCD screen on the back instead of a viewfinder. A RPITA when the sun's on the screen (I must get a Victorian photographer's black hood!), but good for into-the-sun shots.
Curses, my bluff is called. <ahem> I mean, thanks for asking, you're too kind! I've trimmed a load, and converted them to low quality (4/10 whatever that means) JPGs, to keep load times short. I started to give them .htm pages with captions, but I'm out of time, so they're all, good and not-so-good alike, in a directory for you to explore at will. i sent a couple of people postcards... both the same postcard: a picture of that ancient greek statue with the enormous penis. hahaha. i picked the tackiest postcard they had, because they were all so crap. bad photos of beaches at sunset etc.
oh cool. :) eclipse photo.. hope you didn't blind yourself taking that. we got an 86% eclipse in kefalonia. it just went slightly dark (not dark enough for me to remove my sunglasses without having to squint though... lol) and a bit cooler, and people were waving around bits of card with tiny holes in them and stuff. boring.

When you see your first eclipse it's pretty exciting and interesting. After a few they all start to look alike, unless you're a heliologist or something.
I once teased an astronomy-buff neighbor with the song line, "You went up to Nova Scotia--to see a total eclipse of the sun." Then his wife chimed in, "Yes! he did!"

So, I comes back from orientation and initial training with Schneider National (big orange trucks... look for me if you see one), and I checks Paperpusher's site. Arrgh! It has finally happened. They've officially cut off our supply.
I still need a few episodes to complete my collection, and it looks like I'm not going to get them. Still have yet to see "Speedtrapped" or "Janes Addition" or whatever it is. And it really looks like it'll be a looong while before I get a chance to see them. :(

I remember my first and only time on the back of a horse. It was when I was
about ten, and it was massive -- I actually felt my ears popping from the
altitude. (At least that's how big it seemed.) Anyway, I was scared out of my
wits, and the horse knew it. It also made it pretty clear it didn't want to be
a taxi to a group of ten year olds.
For a while I just sat there, too scared to anything. Then I gave it a
kick, and it headed straight for the only tree in the paddock and managed to get
underneath it and leave me caught in the branches. It slid out from under me
and disappeared.
It took me ages to get down. And what's the thing my friends said? Not
"Are you alright?", but "Hurry up, Bill. You have to catch the horse!"
I'll stick to cars.
Handgliding? That sounds fun! The closest I ever came to that was when we strung ropes up in our barn and rode meathooks down them. It's a miracle I survived my childhood.

Nah, gliding. The glider was like a very small, slender, fragile, long-winged light aircraft - without an engine. But it's fun, and amazingly aerobatic - my internal organs made several attempts to push their way past my spine and leave (the instructor was handling the glider during the aerobatics, I hasten to add). The view, and the silence, were also impressive - it would have been even better on a clear day.
Commendable resourcefulness <g>. I've enjoyed outdoor aerial ropeways in the days before they made you wear safety straps... (And a worried climbing instructor once told me that I abseiled faster than the SAS!).
Hang-gliding doesn't quite appeal to me as much as parasailing: using a parachute-like canopy. Imagine a hang-glider without the supporting struts: much lighter, and you can carry it up the hill on your own, let the wind inflate it, run off the edge of the cliff, and fly. It's on the list of Things To Do When I Can!
My colleagues and parishioners always wonder if I'll return from my holidays <g>. But I've only had one serious injury (a collarbone mashed up into five pieces), and that was ski-ing. I'll have grateful words for my Guardian Angel when we meet!
ouch... i broke my collarbone once, but that was only into two pieces. i fell over in the playground and this (considerably heavier) girl who was chasing me, landed on me. lol.
