I was watching one of my many Daria tapes and in the ep. 'Road Worrier' Jake and Helen are talking to the girls about rock festivals they went to when they were younger. When Helen prompts Jake to tell the girls what festival he went to and he says 'Altamont', he sounds exactly like Trent when he says it. Did anyone else notice this?
Wait a minute here. I'm 20 and *I* know what Altamont was. As in, the '69 Stones concert extravaganza that took place at a California speedway that had the drunker-than-skunks Hell's Angels as "security"...until one of them punched a concertgoer to death. I don't think I'm an "old person", not yet anyway.
Under what condition would that be? Hmmm?

It's this candy product whereupon colored sugar is poured into a long, thin paper tube and sealed up...the way you consume it is you rip open a tiny hole at one end of the tube and start taking in the colored sugar. When I could tolerate it, i.e. when I was about 11 years younger, I used to buy one once a week and eat it after school.
Of course now I stick with the more sour candies of my youth...sal limon (salt and lemon powder mixture), Lucas (a chili powder & lemon powder mixture), and Chinese candy (I believe a dried plum rolled in some sort of lemon powder). I never tried Chamoy (liquified Lucas with more chili powder), though.
I had a friend in HS that snorted a Pixy Stik in lines on a restaurant table...it was really embarrassing. Yes, it really WAS a Pixy Stik...he opened it right in front of us...it was Cherry flavored, and when his nose started running it looked like it was bleeding. It was SO gross. Of course, this is the same guy who, later on that night, left the tip for the waitress inside a blown-up condom. Geek.

Kinda weird... and scary. I would have turned around, and run for my life!

To quote Greg Proops, "Pixy Stix were *pure* *sugar*...in a straw. Coloured to make them.....nutritious food, I think." True, they do seem to be 100% sucrose, with ever so light touches of artificial colouring and flavouring. Most surprisingly, they still make them. An indelible memory of my childhood.

Pixy Stix: Suger mixed with small quantities of artificial colors and flavors. Generally served in small hollow paper sticks. Note that larger plastic ones are available.
Ahh, Pixy Styx -- My friends & I were hooked on them in elementary school. We used to consume them during recess; we would swap different flavors. (I liked grape, but going around with a purple tongue all day wasn't too cool, so I stuck with orange and cherry.) And if you didn't have Pixy Styx at recess, you could always share a box of Jello or some sweetened Kool-Aid. And of course, there were the giant Pixy Styx (a great big sugar bong, IYAM).
I think the prinicipal tried to ban all that sugar consumption b/c some of the teachers complained about being stuck in a room full of kids on a sugar buzz, and there were all those sticky hands and faces to boot. Oh, well -- by the time I finished 6th grade, we weren't doing Pixy Styx anymore. We'd moved on to harder fixes, like Pez & Sweet Tarts.

Heh heh heh...Sweet Tarts kick ass. I still like 'em. Ooh! And Nerds...Nerds are great when you're reading a book. Just grab a big box of 'em and pop 'em in a few at a time - they'll last most of the way through even fairly large books :)

NOTE: Even larger ones can be purchased on the black market. The reason they are illegal, is due to the fact that they contain a prototype of a new artificial sweetener, which beside being addictive, also cause the person to experience severe paranoia when digested. When this was discovered, the company responsable for producing Pixy Stix "stopped" production. But rumor has it that they still sell it to pushers and drugusers... (Yes, I know. I have WAAAY too much time on my hands...)

It was the Rolling Stones' answer to Woodstock. Another free rock concert. Except that they hired the Hell's Angels to act as security and it ended up with death and destruction.

I can't picture Jake at a stones concert, from the limited flashbacks we've seen he appears too "hippyish". Like in "that was then, this is dumb" he's at a hippy commune.
Any more guesses as to the truth behind Helen and Jakes youth?
Oddly enough, my fiancee Marie and I were having a conversation on just this topic on our way to work this morning.
Marie pointed out that Helen has two sides to her personality, one more similar to Daria and one to Quinn. On the one hand Helen is an idealist and an intellectual; on the other hand she is driven by the desire to succeed and gain status. Helen believes Quinn to be too shallow and extroverted, and Daria too gloomy and introverted, and she actively encourages Quinn's intelligence and Daria's social life.
Marie believes (partially from evidence in the show) that when Helen was young she dated much like Quinn (maybe not quite so frantically) and was very much concerned with popularity. When she met Jake she fell seriously in love, possibly for the first time.
It's my personal opinion that Jake and Trent are more than a little bit alike, the main difference being that Jake had a rougher childhood and is very worn down by life. I've noticed that Jake seems to really like Trent (and this feeling appears reciprocated), and that when he talks to Trent he gets a lot calmer and happier.
This is relevant because of who Daria likes, and who Helen fell in love with.
And Jake and Trent both find Daria's snide little asides funny. And Trent's Dad acts like Jake without the childhood traumas.
Scary how much is in the genes. Referenced directly in Daria! of course, but more interesting where their approach is subtler, like in Lane Miserables. pm: Daria has nightmarish vision of Trent waxing ever fatter, balder and more sofa-bound. following am: Helen gives Trent a no-holds-barred pep talk about joining the real world. Of course, had Daria met Daddy Lane she might have had a different vision - though possibly equally scary! Ideas for what it might have been?

Yeah but Jake's a loser, and going to Altamont instead of Woodstock would be a fitting part of his life's history of losing.
The inclusion of references like Altamont shows that despite Channel 5 putting it in a wussy children's slot, Daria is aimed just as much at us adults, and not particularly young ones at that.
