In another message on this board, Bonus Sock (that name got a chuckle out of me) says that Upchuck is the ultimate male on the show. Hmmmm..... (ponders). Yes. Yes, I would have to agree. While all the characters have their strong points, Upchuck comes from out of nowhere with the greatest lines. Some examples:
"Backseat Brittany" "Good day ladies! What do we have here? Science project? Adorable little pet? (rowf!)" (not Upchuck, but rather Quinn:) "All I could collect is this $10, and it's for you. It's from Upchuck. He wants to rent that fake boob for the weekend."
We've discussed the females of the show, now how about the men? Comments, please?
I like the guys that constantly follow Quinn around, ya know, Joey, Jeffie, Jamie...Jamie (I think) is the one that always gets called the wrong name, he's pretty cute. I like his hair. ~~Shel
My favorite male character is Jake, Daria and Quinn's dad. He gives Homer Simpson a serious run for the title of Delightfully Dumb Dad.
I can't pick a favorite line of his -- because pretty much everything coming out of his mouth is hilarious, especially his responses and exchanges with his wife Helen. His lines are a good example of the really great dialogue writing that goes on on this series.
Personally, I like Trent Lane. He plays in a band, he has a crush on Daria, he's Jane's brother, He's got cool hair, and he's sexy..... what more could you ask for?!?!?
Okay, okay, we're, I mean I'm, speculating and hoping that Trent has a crush on Daria, because I want to know what Daria would be like if she had a boyfriend...would she *gasp* change her clothes? ~~Shel
I think Upchuck would annoy Daria. He's kind of...quirky?? It would be really funny to see what happened between them, but I don't think they'd last very long. ~~Shel
Having just posted a message in the "Daria and Trent" thread, I will now proceed to make a hypocrite out of myself and make one small complaint about the direction this thread is going in.
This is not intended as criticism of anyone, because I'm tickled that so many other people enjoy the show as much as I do, but I hope that not every examination of a character on Daria has to turn into a discussion of which ones would make the best couple or which one is the most sexually desirable. I mean, even though such concerns are central to our lives -- well, mine anyway -- there's arguably more to the show than that! If "who's going to sleep with who" and "who'd make a cute couple" were going to become our sole focus as viewers...we might as well be watching The Real World XXVI or worse still, Road Rules, the latter being my choice for the most evil and despicable television program of all time.
Will anyone join with me in saying that Road Rules IS the anti-Daria? The two minutes I see of it every week waiting for Daria to begin are the two longest minutes of every week.
More commentary on Upchuck and why Don finds him so admirable? (Unless I very much miss my guess, he probably has nude centerfold pictures taped over every square inch of his bedroom walls. Upchuck, that is, not Don.)
Jake and Helen -- good parents, tightly-wound psychotics, or both? (Both, I say.)
Are Mack and Jodie a real couple, or are they just friends who are together all the time because everyone expects them to be? (Okay, so that's a "couple" question. I already said I was a hypocrite.)
Isn't anybody else curious about Andrea? What's up with her? She seems like another intelligent person -- there must be some reason she hasn't bonded with Daria and Jane as like-minded souls. (I have my own theory about this.)

I think they could be just friends, we really haven't seem them in any "couple" situations yet.
I look for her in every episode, she has to be one of the most mysterious characters on the show.

I agree, but I don't think that's what's going on here. We all know that Daria would like to have a boyfriend on some level, based on her unrequited (so far) love for Trent. No one is saying nonsense like, "I hope Daria goes out with Kevin because he's a hunk." It's more like, "Hmmmmm, who might be right for our gal?" If she can't have Trent, it would be nice if she could have SOMEONE.
Much more...though this is still part of the show.
What's the Real World or Road Rules? If they exist, I do not recognize their existance.
I *always* tape Daria, so I only see any part of the preceding show at scan speed with no sound, so I have no opinion on this.
I think Upchuck would be a good match for Daria because he's smart, resourceful and cynical...sounds good to me. I'll bet he's the only guy in class that actually UNDERSTANDS Daria's answers to the history questions.
Probably, but that's probably just immaturity and wishful thinking on his part...though those two descriptions might fit Daria's fascination with Trent.
Yeah, I've never had pictures of centerfolds or bikini babes on my walls...that's just lame.
Jake is libel to go postal at any second. I think Helen is relatively well-adjusted, though a bit too work-oriented for my taste.
Ugh. Agreed. It wouldn't be so bad if they'd just run the end credits and end the show, so I'd know when to unmute the television. But they feel the need to fill every pre-Daria second with the blathering and yammering of these people I don't care about. Sheesh.

Andrea reminds me of me when I was in HS, except it was punk and not goth. I, for one, hope they bring her more into the spotlight. She seems like she'd fit in with Daria and Jane, but who can say for sure?

You get my vote! The whole premise of the show is like the directions on a bottle of shampoo: "Teens. Sex. Crisis. Repeat." I wanted to show my mother an episode of Daria, but I accidentally got the last five seconds (five seconds!) of Road Rules. It was some idiot talking about how they like kinky sex. NOT a good lead-in to the greatest show in the world. Needless to say (but I will anyway), Mom kinda lost her desire to watch Daria.
