Oh my god! There was sooo much crammed into this one hour and a half my head is spinning.... SPOILER

Daria dumps Tom?

The dissolution of the Fashion Club?

Jane DOES go to college.....

I got to watch this one again!

Aw, that was so sad. I didn't really expect that at all, even though Tom was remarkably irritating for the first half of the movie. It had to happen, but it was sad all the same.

Doubly unexpected....in a way...nice semi-backbone from Stacy, though.

You can't split up the duo. Not at all. I figured in the end, Jane would go to college....just because she has to. (And Trent is a great brother....why can't my brother be like that?)

Hehehehehe. I laughed so hard. Has Andrea just been waiting for this one chance?

No it wasn't!!! I ain't saying that 'cause I dont' like Tom (COUGH).

However it was inevitable, because to tell you the truth, Daria's heart was never really in it. She just got carried away with the notion that a guy was interested in her for all the right reasons- her mind. Since we're talking teenagers in specifically, and humanity in general, that's a rare thing. I will admit I fell off the couch when she said that they were bored with each other.

<WHOOOSH>

See my comments below for more information regarding Jane and Daria.

I just knew Stacy would walk away first. There were a lot of speculations that came to pass in this episode. And did you check out the end credits and how everyone "ended up". That's another thread all it's own...

I didn't want to see that either, but I figured it was inevitable. How many guys end up marrying their Senior High boyfriend?

I actually expected it, if only because Stacey is starting to assert herself. Of course, the FC never was anything but a clique of four girls that pretended to be a club. Now they're just a clique of four girls. So nothing fundamental has changed. Only graduation will split up that combo.

She wants more artistic challenges. Also, despite what Jane said at one point, she might make some contacts that would help her paintings get shown.

I actually thought Jane WOULDN'T go to college.

(1) We don't know what happened at that little tryst. It might have been a disaster for both of them. (2) Misery loves company. Andrea's probably as dateless as Upchuck is. (3) We don't really know anything about Andrea. She's been seen so little in the show.

Did anybody else think the ONeill-Barch "engagement" was as funny as I did?

I really liked that tribute at the end of the credits:

TO THE FANS - - - THANKS!

You're welcome, and thanks for noticing us.

This thing could be like Star Trek, with Daria getting more fans after cancellation than it had when it was going on. Of course, for that to happen, it would have to get syndicated somewhere, or all the eps released on VHS or DVD, or, best of all, both.

Then again, there's that whole "Trekkie" thing. Sorry. Bad analogy.

More like he was heavily out of character for the movie. This is the same guy who drives a really beat up car he found on his own instead of something his parents bought him? This is the same guy who got so uncomfortable any time the people Daria introduced him to went bonkers over his last name and family? This is the same guy who hated going to all those social gatherings his family dragged him too? Jesus, at the rate it was going I was half expecting Trent to show up and start telling Jane she should give up art and become an accountant.

And where the hell did that "we don't have anything in common" BS come from? That was the entire reason they started dating -- the liked the same kind of movies and books, they liked discussing the same topics, and they both shared the same scewed outlook on life. Even Jane and Quinn both agreed that they made a great couple.

Well as I said in my other post, Dari's heart was never in this relationship to begin with. That's why she was such a moody bitch during Season 5 to begin with. She didn't know how to handle a relationship, and found the perfect way to break up with "St Thomas of Lawndale" by admiting that she was bored with trying to pretend that she actually wanted to stay with the guy.

I do admit, it was cold, but it's better to give than to receive, so says the Good Book.

Firah

MMan37xFirah

Trouble is, if that's true, that makes Daria look like a horrible hypocrite in retrospect throughout season 5. I'm not sure it's quite the case, though. I think she was serious at the beginning.

Still, I'll never watch IIFY again without cringing at Tom for showing up at the end to give Daria another chance. He should have quit then.

Actually, she handled the break-up better that 99.99% of girls (or even grown women) would. And was actually honest about it.

But she could be starting a life-long pattern of only-half-trying in relationships.

M Man

Corvus MarinusMMan37x

Hwt! We have heard of the glory of [email] (MMan37x) that wrote news:[email], on the day of 22 Jan 2002:

A * l i p s t i c k - s t a i n e d * m u g * o f * S P O I L E R * S P A C E

Daria was always both serious and conflicted about Tom - they broke up in "Is It Fall Yet?", and she tried to break up with him in "My Night at Daria's."

And if he'd given up at the end of IIFY, we would have missed a few classic scenes, like Tom and Daria eating Quinn's chocolates, or Tom, Jeffy and Jake driving go-carts. To judge from Tom's attitude in his last scene in IICY, he doesn't regret the time he spent with Daria at all.

I wouldn't say it was cold, just honest. (Leaving a note for Tom informing him that they've broken up, as she did in "My Night at Daria's," is *cold.*) After all, she could have made a play for his best friend, or taken a page from Sandi's book and dumped him on his birthday. ^_^

I think she did a lot more than half-try - she worked through serious problems with Tom in "Is It Fall Yet," "Sappy Anniversary," "The Story of D," and "My Night at Daria's." Going to separate colleges would put more strain on their relationship than she was willing to try to deal with, and I can't really fault her for that - leaving home and trying to cope with being a college freshman is going to be stressful enough for her as it is. And she respected Tom enough to tell him the truth (although I loved Quinn's suggestion that she should have kept him around until the summer was over. "You don't *tell* him, Daria!").

Daria assumed that Tom was getting bored because she was, but I doubt that was true - he was arguing that a long-distance relationship was feasible if they really worked at it. I think he gave in not because he was bored but because he knew that the relationship couldn't work if she was bored.

MMan37xCorvus Marinus

Well, in MNaD, she (incorrectly) assumed HE wouldn't want her anymore after she failed to show for their sex date. Not quite the same thing as in IICY, when she knew he wanted to continue.

I hope so. I suppose a "Muffy" from Fielding Prep would have been completely boring to date in his senior year.

But then, he might have done better than a Muffy without Daria in the picture - after all, Stacy's available :-)

Interesting that outside of "Just Add Water", we've never seen any of Sandi's boyfriends. And that guy dumped her (in none too nice a way)!

*She* worked through serious problems? Or Tom worked her through them? She never quite carried her weight in the relationship.

... like Daria could hide her feelings for three months once her mind's made up.

<Daria>

Quinn! I'm not YOU!

</Daria?

Maybe - except (as someone else pointed out) that the fact that he wanted to meet her at the theater to save the time of going to her house first might indicate her was bored with her and no longer worth much effort -but if she's no longer trying, it's easy to see why he'd become bored (shades of how he felt about Jane long 'bout the end of season 4.)

M Man

Steve CrossMMan37x

We're all pulling for Stacy, but I can't see Tom taking an interest in her. It's not clear that they have anything in common, and I really think her anxiety attacks would give him fits. ("Oh, my god, I gave Sandi laryngitis!") Tom's upper-crust family would scare her out of her wits.

The ideal boyfriend for Stacy would be extremely kind, sweet, loving, and considerate, and also share some of her interests. (Drama, maybe?) And no, I'm not thinking of Upchuck.

I'm sorry I missed that ep.

I agree. The lecture Tom gave her toward the end of IIFY that got them back together again put him in a very good light.

I agree. I was totally bananas my first year at college.

Watching that scene, I wondered if maybe Tom as a person, for all his virtues, is just a tad boring.

Steve Cross

MMan37xSteve Cross

Well, Stacy is *mostly* over that. And maybe some emotionalism might be just what Tom needs after Deadpan Daria.

I can understand Stacy freaking at least a little at seeing a wish like that come true. Kind of a minor-league version of what Jane went through in "The Misery Chick".

Well, I was *somewhat* joking about Stacy, since I have somewhat of a reputation on this ng as a Stacy-phile, while Corvus, whom I was responding to, for some inexplicable reason likes Sandi :-)

Still, don't you think Tom is "sweet, loving, kind and considerate"? Not sure about sharing interests, but with Stacy coming out of her FC shell, she might be ready for new interests.

Not the greatest, unless you truly enjoy seeing Sandi get hugely dumped on at the end.

But he should have been a little more on his guard later - as Daria drifted back into the same thing. I think he was more surprised at being dumped than he should have been.

Actually, I found college to be the best years of my life - pretty much from day one.

... if he shares his parents' taste in music - The Carpenters? But in "Jane's Addition" he seemed to enjoy Mystik Spiral.

In "Aunt Nauseam", Tom referred to his "repressed family life" and it may make him look boring, when he's really just low-key.

Or maybe he really is boring ...

personally, I think the writers dropped the ball on the Tom & influence thing....we never really knew contents of 2nd letter....could have been "please come back for 2nd interview"...but Daria had already decided to "do it on her own" and go to Raft....also....w/ Jane going to same town as Daria for school, leaves the series open ended for whomever picks up the option for the series...as I'm sure as a business move, it must be for sale, not just for re-runs, but future episodes... say if Cartoon Network buys the series from MTV animation, whom I am sure would LOVE to make more cash off the series...but then again, I'm assuming they own the rights....perhaps the producers do?...or creators?....in any case, to leave it open ended was a wise choice, business is business...and Daria is enough of a realist to not stay w/ her High school boyfriend while attending college....anyway, she has broken up w/ Tom before....so that's really nothing new.....Tom just never was written in character consistently anyway...so just my 2 cents....all in all....not bad, but not a great way to go out...but perhaps, it will be bought and more eps will come... It's the same situation with IICY that plagued all of Season 5: it felt very rushed. Things might have been better had MTV been generous enough to allow "Daria" to play out their senior year through a sixth season, but the writing was on the wall when they got tight-fisted, which all but forced Glenn Eichler to accelerate the timetable. (The shuttering of MTV Animation didn't help.)

I'm assuming that, unfortunately, MTV owns the rights to "Daria" and not Glenn. Glenn has already stated that he feels the series was properly wrapped up, and I'd have grave doubts about the quality any spin-off that wasn't under his guidance. (I'd also not put a lot of stock in that TV Guide report about a Trent/Mystik Spiral spin-off, either. Lots of ideas get floated around the industry, with probably only a tiny fraction of it ever seeing a camera lens.)

Sadly, that's an understatement. Again, it's the whole "rushing it" thing: given more time, Tom could've been better developed as a character. As it stands, they were forced to work with what they had alread developed, and though Daria's decision to break up with Tom was the mature one (and, I'll admit, the right one -- long-distance relationships are hell, particularly during one's college years), it seemed... oh, I guess "forced" is the best term for it. But, at least they parted as friends, with a promise to get together again in the future. Much better than anyone had any right to expect.

(IMHO, in support of the "getting bored with each other" claim -- which I stil think is weak, but it's all we have -- one could use "Life in the Past Lane" as evidence, with the whole "Daria and Tom in a rut" thing. Just a theory...)

I hope not. I still have vivid nightmares about "AfterMASH" and "Saved By The Bell: The College Years" and "The New WKRP in Cincinnati"... though Tawny Kitaen was *very* easy on the eyes in that one. :-)

That's it. I was trying to figure out why it felt so off and I couldn't. I guess Tom was just enough in character to throw me off, because I usually pick that sort of thing up.

I was talking to an acquaintance of mine today and she was happy Daria and Tom broke up because she thought Tom was better-suited to Jane. ::shrug::

I know that will have some people cheering, but pretty sad I think. It might have been easier to take if they'd talked it out at length and reached the same conclusion. I think Tom could reasonably conclude Daria never gave him a fair chance. I hate to think of him ending up with some "Muffy".

Well, once it was clear Daria & Tom would be going to different colleges, it was pretty obvious to me they'd break up. The way it happened, however, seemed rather impulsive on Daria's part, a quality we're more used to seeing from Jane (remember, it was her impulsiveness that started the entire triangle). Well, the movie was only about 1:15, so they probably couldn't put in a long discussion without cutting out something else.

Was it just me, or did Glenn & company sort of give away the location of Lawndale? Remember that Kay, Tom, & Daria drove from Lawndale to Bromwell, then on to Boston. This suggests that Lawndale is in the Northeast US (perhaps in CT, as Michelle Klein-Hass suggests in her fanfic series).

Or ending up like Howard Hughes...^_^

I didn't think Daria seemed impulsive. My impression was that her bluntness tied in with her excruciating college interview experience: she knew that the longer she thought about it, the more difficult it would be to say anything at all.

That was a beautifully-done scene. After being in full royal-bitch mode for most of the movie, Sandi finally had to make a choice between being President of the Fashion Club and hanging out with her friends, and she chose her friends! (Of course, being Sandi, she did it in such a way as to make it seem like the Fashion Club was never her idea in the first place.) She actually smiles a little when they decide to meet at her house.

I never saw it coming, either. Now I'm sorrier than ever that the show has ended! I'd love to see what they do now that they're all on equal terms (more or less)...

(And this wouldn't be an authentic Corvus Marinus post if I didn't comment on the outfit that Sandi's wearing in that scene. 0_0 Is she taking fashion pointers from Jennifer Lopez or something?)

As a true geek, I lay awake last night trying to piece together the clues. A suburb within driving distance of Boston, yet also within driving distance of country & western territory (see Speedtrapped) - someone (I thought it was Michelle Klein-Hass) suggested that Maryland was a likely location. That just about works...it's within driving distance of both Boston and Virginia, there are mountains in which you could conceivably die in a snowstorm ("Antisocial Climbers"), it's close to the seashore ("Just Add Water") and gets threatened by hurricanes ("Daria!"). There's also a pretentious artists' colony at Penland, near Asheville, North Carolina, that's reminiscent of Ashfield in "Is It Fall Yet?" Hmm...

(Man, I *really* need to get a life. ^_^)

His terrified reaction when she says "Okay," followed by his quick recovery, was priceless.

I thought it was pretty much inevitable, since "Fat Like Me," that the FC would soon dissolve. As I've said before, it never was anything more than a clique of 4 girls passing as a club. Dissolving the club, however, wasn't just a formality. It ended Sandi's power as President. That, of couse, had been shaky ever since FLM.

There were all sorts of dramatic possibilities in FC that couldn't be explored in a series where all but Quinn were basically secondary characters. We only saw occasional (very revealing) glimpses of Sandi's family and home life, and we know nothing about Quinn's and Stacy's families except what we can infer from their bedrooms.

That was a hot outfit! If Sandi had a more appealing personality, she'd be as attractive as Quinn.

That's an impressive piece of analysis, Corvus. If Eichler or Ms Grandstaff is from MD, or if one of the animators was once at Penland, that would clinch it.

I agree. This may have been the nearest thing to an actual date he's ever had. I really wish we could have learned more about Andrea.

What about Burnout Chick Cindy? We've seen her in dozens of episodes, but she's never had anything to do or say. I didn't know she existed until I found her mentioned on the official MTV Daria website. I was curious to know if IICY would feature her, but no.

I can see that the dissolution was going to happen sooner or later, but I never expected it to end peacefully.

Er...ITYM *Tiffany's* and Stacy's families. We know a fair amount about Quinn's. ^_^

In retrospect, it's easy to see how the end of the Fashion Club was foreshadowed throughout Season 5 - not just in "Fat Like Me" but also in "Lucky Strike," "Art Burn," "Life in the Past Lane," and "Aunt Nauseam." And the fact that Sandi realized, on some level, that they were all better off without it, shows that there's a little hope for her.

(Must...resist...comment...)

It was a nice touch to have all four of them wearing new outfits and hairstyles in the breakup scene - one of those grace notes the series provided so often.

Thanks for the compliment! Upon rewatching the movie I noticed an interesting in-joke. After the visit to Bromwell, as Kay Sloane turns onto the ramp and sees the traffic jam, there's a very brief shot of a truck with the Utz Potato Chip logo. Utz is a brand found throughout Maryland (one of their specialities is "Crab" Chips made with Old Bay seasoning) - the company is based in Pennsylvania, just a few miles from the Maryland border. It's the only use of an actual brand name I've ever seen on the series.

And in case anyone needs further proof of my geekiness, I also figured out that "Bromwell" is a stand-in for Yale, based on Kay's comment at 9:30 that they should get to Boston about 1:00. Yale's the only Ivy League college that's about 3 1/2 hours from Boston. But that gets us back to Lawndale being in Connecticut...

And more about Upchuck, for that matter. The only glimpse of his parents was a scene with his mother in a fantasy sequence in "Legends of the Mall"!

The mysterious background character I wanted to know more about was Dawn, the girl with the walkman. Well, I guess that's what fanfics are for. ^_^

Sigh. I ask anyone to go to Mapquest.com, and punch up Lawndale. There are several *real* locations--one in California, North Carolina--and in Maryland, near Baltimore, practically beside it. Based on the "clues" throughout the series, I'll go with the Maryland one, myself, it makes the most sense, and when you think about it, the distance from Baltimore to Boston by car is *not* that far. Exactly. And the mere fact they didn't "mention going around NYC" in IICY only means that, in between the wreck on I-95 and the constant rain, there were other reasons why they got to Boston so late.

Daria and Quinn go on a roadtrip of only a few hours' duration, to a place with a bunch of redneck types in another episode, the name of which I forget. I assumed at the time Lawndale would have to be near Texas or Oklahoma, but MD being near VA would do just as well.

If it takes you 3.5 hours to get from Boston to New Haven or vice versa then you're driving pretty slow. It shouldn't take more than 2.5 hours.

Similarly, Dartmouth is just over 2 hours away unless you take the scenic route; Brown is about 1 hour away; and Columbia is about 4 hours away.

It's over 300 miles from Boston - at least a 5 hour drive, about the same as to Princeton. UPenn, the furthest Ivy Leaguer from Boston, is about 6 hours away.

Given the various references (including the hurricane) , the range as I see it would be (S to N): - Maryland, close to the Chesapeake but not directly in the Baltimore/DC axis. - Delaware (near Wilmington?). - New Jersey (xcept the NE corner). - Maybe some bits of SE Penn. - Connecticut, except the SW corner

Quite a bit of real estate.

Why not Northern Jersey or SW Connecticut? It's never mentioned exactly WHERE Helen's high-powered law practice is, but considering the magnitude of most of the cases I wouldn't think twice about placing it in Manhattan. The Baltimore connection works because the only other logical place for the high-powered law practice would be in DC.

You answered yourself elsewhere: because it was such a huge deal to go to NYC with Val. Further-out-in-Jersey, or N. Maryland, SE Penn or DE would put them within striking distance not necessarily of Philadelphia (a major city with a Federal District Court seat) but of *Wilmington* (DE) where a lot of the US's major businesses are legally incorporated (and under whose state Courts' jurisdiction they come).

I could also place that practice just about anywhere where there is a Fed District Court(@ least one per state, PA is split in E and W districts, NY in N and S) , or a *state* major financial center.

You are right, though, any location would run into unsolvable conflicts with one or another thing we saw happen.

OF COURSE!!! Delaware! Known for its lenient tax laws and overall pro-business attitude...yeah, Delaware would be likely to be the home for that law practice.

Hwt! We have heard of the glory of [email] (Michelle Klein-Hass) that wrote news:[email], on the day of 23 Jan 2002:

It was never mentioned in the series, but the "Virtual Lawndale" map on the MTV Daria site shows Vitale, Davis, Horowitz et al.'s offices right next to the former alt.lawndale.com cyber cafe. In "Dye, Dye My Darling" Daria had no trouble getting to Helen's office, which supports the idea that it's in Lawndale itself. (Geo-Geek strikes again!)

The firm isn't *that* high-powered - I mean, one of their senior partners couldn't tell the difference between UNICEF and Uniroyal! ^_^

Well, I've never liked Sandi's personality, but I've always liked her figure.

Yes, that outfit truly sizzled.

If you think you need to get a life -

I once figured out the various characters' heights from a picture in "The Daria Database" in which they're all standing in front of their lockers. We know from "Lane Miserables" that Daria is 5'2". I think I figured Quinn at 5'3", Tiffany at 5'5", Sandi and Stacy both nearly 5'8", Kevin about 6'5" and Upchuck 5'7" or so.

But if you watch the series carefully, they're not always consistent about heights.

I was looking for the black t-top Trans-Am and the Foghat 8 track blasting in the background.

The girl looked someone who stepped out of the 1975!

Daria - It appears the unthinkable has happened.

Quinn - Tube tops are coming back?

Yep. In the best way possible, and for an insightful reason. (Voice of experience talking, here).

Well, sort of. I think it's the beginning of the end. They graduate in a year. They'll never attract new members. Why keep up the pretense that they're anything other than a small clique? But, they probably would.

Yep. Bets on whether she'd graduate?

Yep. Again and again.

I was pleased and impressed by the whole thing. And, yes, Andrea and Upchuck, too. Quite a witty plot twist. Great.

To everyone involved in the making of Daria: Wit. Insight. Integrity. Intelligence. You kept it at that level longer than probably anyone in the industry. Well done. Thanks, and may providence be good to you in all your future endeavors (or endeavours, for the benefit of the UK contingent.) "You done good."

That they're going their separate ways doesn't surprise me. I was surprised that the breakup didn't come after a "different worlds" argument like they had in IIFY. And a little surprised that it was Daria's idea. Very happy they're still on good terms.

Stacy kinda regressed here with her "curse" on Sandi. Then again, Quinn did that a couple times during season 5, too, so that's normal growing up. Sometimes you take two steps forward and one back. A little sad she and Upchuck didn't continue their relationship.

How about Quinn and Lindy? Quinn held her own pretty well with someone older...and stood up for what she thought was right when she confronted Lindy on her drinking.

Admit it. Wouldn't you have rather SEEN Andrew Landon get that elbow in the ribs, rather than hear about it? :)

Considering Kevin was struggling with a school choice when everyone else was, maybe this was a sign he wasn't the hot-shot athlete we've been led to believe. Then again, if Kevin had had an awakening on how he'd blown an opportunity for a free college education, he wouldn't be Kevvy, would he?

I'm also glad this finale (I wouldn't mind a sequel, though!) didn't end with tear-filled goodbyes as the girls were headed for Boston and the next chapter of their lives. The MASH finale was a little too sappy. Wings (Does USA still show that?) got it right, I thought...and I agree with other posts about "The Fugitive." If this is it for "Daria," they got it right.

Thanks to MTV for showing the poll winners after the show. Much better clips than "Looking Back in Annoyance." And Tracy Grandstaff seemed genuinely appreciative of us, the fans who have given "Daria" as much attention and love as we have over the years.

Tracy, Glenn, and a whole bunch of other people whose names I don't know: Thank you.

Joe Still looking for a flesh-and-blood version of Aunt Amy ;)

Probably wasn't to be, though I have written a fanfic in which things progress a little further...

I was disappointed at Stacy falling for a "magic potion" sold on the Internet.

Yeah, our little girl's becoming a woman. Now if she can get her *parents* to lay off the sauce.

Damn right!

Impressed with Mack, though, visiting Andrew in his office. Andrew Landon must be very intimidating as your girlfriend's father. Mack didn't back down an inch, but wasn't belligerent about it, either.

Kevin should go to Oakwood next year. Go Taproots!
