I have a feeling that Tom is the "someone" Daria embarks on a relationship with.And to be honest I didn't see this development coming. I thought they'd just become friends. Now what about Jane?

Okay, after seeing what it's like to be with a girl who really likes him for himself and enjoys being around him A LOT, Tom doesn't act quite the same way around Jane. This causes Jane some grief, but she puts up with it. She tries to ask him what is wrong, but Tom doesn't want to hurt Jane's feelings so he keeps it to himself.
While this is happening, Daria is trying to get that image of Tom looking over his shoulder at her out of her head. "This is my best friend's boyfriend! Off limits." What better cure than Trent... After trying to hang around Trent in some way or another, she realizes that it doesn't compare to the openness she felt with Tom. What to do, what to do???
Tom calls Daria. "I need to talk to you about something." Daria is cautious ("That's what phones are for...") Tom just tells her that it's really important to meet him somewhere. They go there, and Tom really lets it all out. He tells Daria how much better she is than Jane and how much Jane has "wronged" him. Daria quietly disagrees during his whole whine session. Jane is NOT a bad person. Finally, Tom springs it on Daria. "I'll probably be breaking up with Jane." Daria is so shocked she can't speak. "For you," Tom adds (or something to that effect). Daria is completely silent for a half minute. Tom takes her silence for agreement and takes her hand and looks her deep in the eyes. (OOOOOhhhhh...big thing in Daria land.) That's it. Daria violently takes her hand away and shouts at Tom. "How can you be doing something like this to Jane? She's my best friend blah blah blah..." Tom, "But..." Daria, "No. I couldn't do that to Jane." She walks off in a huff with Tom unsuccessfully trying to stop her.
Later that week (day?) Jane is at the end of her rope. What is wrong with Tom? He isn't himself lately. Daria is silent. Jane notices and eventually pries the information out of her. Tom likes Daria, not Jane. Jane is very angry at Daria at first for even considering going out with HER boyfriend. After a while, she calms down and realizes Daria is still her best friend, and Tom was being dishonest. Jane breaks up with Tom. Hence, the writers succeed in getting rid of the only "important" new character that was ever introduced after season one. Shame on them!!! :)

Of course. You see, Tom is really an alien doppleganger from Emoticon V, the land of the winky smileys. He's been using Jane and Daria to gain a toehold for his species on Earth. If he can break up their friendship, he knows that the possibilities for the winky smiley rule of Earth are limitless. Unfortunately, Trent uses his psychic powers to read Tom's strange alien mind, and warns Jane and Daria , who promptly have Tom deleted. ;-)
Or... Daria goes through a nihilistic phase after a brush with death at an alligator wrestling farm when she almost drowns in a mud bog, due to the rupture of an unstable floorboard in the footpath. Fortunately for her, Tom saves her and brings her back from the tunnel of light and the beckoning dead relatives. When Jane makes a sarcastic remark about the whole thing, an outraged Daria plans revenge on Jane by taking Tom from her. (Besides, she thinks Tom is meant for her, not to be wasted on the likes of Jane...) Anyway, 5 car chases, 2 helicopter chases, and a blimp battle later, the three mend their fences and agree to join a cult that believes in polygamy somewhere in Tuvalu. And they live happily ever after. Trent, meanwhile, misses the whole thing because nobody ever bothered to wake him up. ;-)
Too bad I couldn't come up with any better ones than that, but I think they're plausible, too. ;-)

Well, do remember that MTV was the network that had that half hour (or was it hour?) special on polyamory.
And anyway, stuff like that does happen in real life. It's rare, but it happens. I think it'd be quite interesting to watch. But then, I'm totally weird. I also think you're right when you say Jane and Tom would probably be more receptive to it than Daria, but you never know. People can be really surprising when presented with situations like that -- it's such a wildcard that it throws people off balance and you can get some unexpected reactions.

And here we were, thinking we'd have to wait for #407 for a serious ep.
You could sense it a bit when Jane mentioned she was looking for Tom, yes Daria showed her then resentment, but something was there that I couldn't quite see, until later.
Very reluctant to let Tom come along with her and Tad first, she let him. Trading barbs back and forth about the parade surroundings and happenings, I figured he was making another attempt to prove himself to Daria so they could try to become friends and not just her tolerating him with Jane.
Ah, but this is where things begin to change.....
Throughout their adventures at the parade Daria was obviously enjoying herself, but wouldn't let it show, due to her overwhelming stoicism, with Trent she would just clam up and lose her train of thought, but Tom actually elicited a true honest to goodness smile out of Daria, even if only briefly, and he jumped on the opprotunity to make her come out of her shell even more, which she did, and she actually smiled 3-4 times(not sure, only watched this once so far), Daria was never that open with her emotions with anyone, Jane to a lesser extent, has seen it, the Mona-Lisa smirk was as much emotion as you'd see, but here you get full-blown smiles, she's never let her walls down that much to anyone, and Tom brought it out of her, and if you couldn't tell at this point, after you see Daria covered in paint, and watching Jane and Tom leave together, you see Tom turn around, and from his POV you actually see a Daria with no walls to protect her, you see her completely open for the first time. You never saw this with Trent, she'd go more into herself, with Tom she actually opened up. The scene from Tom's POV was a very powerful image of a Daria with her defenses dropped. Also if that wasn't enough, listen to the song in the ending credits, "I know there's something going on" It talks of breaking up friendships, seeing thing end and others begin, especially the final lyrics we hear before the end, "it won't be long before you've gone" Boy the 2nd half season and/or the movie are going to be very interesting.
There are 2 ways to look at this:
1) Daria and Tom have settled their differences and are now friends, they've ended all the animosity, and we'll have 3 partners in crime now.
or
2) Daria and Tom have that spark and are possibly lighting the fire under a possible relationship, but this leads to 2 questions:
a)Where does this leave Jane in all of this?
If this were to happen any number of things can occur, Jane breaks up with Tom to allow Daria some happiness, sacrificing her own happiness for that of her friends, she could fight for her man, thereby causing a rift between her and Daria, and also Trent and Daria as friends, as I believe he'd be upset with Daria for trying to break up Jane and Tom which he sees as a good fit together, or he'd use this oppprotunity to express his feelings, if any, for him to get Daria on her good side again, and try to patch things up between them. Not likely as of now, but time will tell.
b) Where does leave Daria after all of this?
We know that Daria values her friendship with Jane above all else and wouldn't want to knowingly cause it to disintegrate over Tom, yet she senses all of these new feelings shes never felt before with Tom and may want to explore them more, she's never acted upon these feelings with Trent, however, but this is a new experience for her, never having been in a relationship before, it's all new and confusing for her, she may act upon these feelings, and affect her and Janes friendship for the worse. Her loyalty to her friend may win out, however, and Daria and Tom will "just be friends"
However it goes, for now one thing appears to be certain, Any feelings for Trent appear to be flickering out, it may be there, but if it is, it's holding on barely by a figernail. I WAS a shipper, after this ep thats all but disappeared.
Whatever they do, we've got our first continuing story arc, and it will be extremely interesting to see how it plays out over the next 7 episodes and into the movie. Episodes like this rejuvenate my interest in the show to a sometimes fanatical level, one of the best, definitely the best of the season and possibly the entire series run.
For my feelings on anything related to the rest of the ep. see the one of the other threads, I forget which one.
To sum it up in 1 word.....WOW!!!!!!!!!!

It will, but it is going to be pretty messy. After all, Jane still assumes that Daria either a) has a crush on Trent or b) will not go out on a limb to like someone new. Therefore, she is in for a nasty surprise if the picture comes out...or Tom himself faces the music and tells Jane about his feelings for Daria. Sigh....
Yes, I really do think that this ep was the best. However, I am still kind of sad that they didn't figure Trent in a little bit more. But now, it seems that Jane, Daria and Trent are going into different directions which makes me kind of sad. But in the long run, this entire "Tom thing" will keep me guessing for the rest of the season. Although I am really peturbed at the fact that they would want to cause a rift between Daria and Jane (I mean, without her, who else is there to be a best friend), but it does spell a new beginning. After all, Daria is changing a lot this season. Although the changes are not so apparent at first, when you sit and watch the eps again, you see that she has a completely different personality than in the last three seasons. And what is more, is that possibly Tom might bring about the needed change that Trent didn't do in the last three seasons. Trent (although it was really cool to watch those scenes) really brought out some serious heart-ache and angst in Daria. And rather watch her suffer over watching him mindlessly take out Monique, maybe it might be better for her to pursue this thing with Tom. However, I have to admit--seeing Trent and Daria together is a whole lot more fun than seeing Tom and Daria!
But it will hurt my heart that Jane is going to be the one scarred in all of this. Although it has been unpleasant to see Jane and Daria fighting a lot more and not spending as much time as friends together, somebody has to pay the price. And maybe this will make Jane see her priorities in terms of friendship.

Yup. The plot *really* thickens. So, how to resolve it? At least two characters are going to have to face serious questions about integrity and honor. Depending on how they resolve those questions, at least one character is going to get hurt, at least a little.
I think the writing staff is more than capable of pulling this off with intelligence and sensitivity. The challenge will be to keep up the wit and humor. And it's a situation that defies pat resolution. That is, if the writers have any sense of integrity or honor. I'm concerned that it's a plot line with the capability of sucking up too much creative energy.
