What is a 'shipper?

In terms of Daria, it is anyone that wants to see Daria and Trent get together romantically. A shipper would usually ignore any threat to this belief (like Ted or Lerman)

The term shipper (as in relationshipper or worshipper) was coined far before Daria existed and has relevance for many shows, anywhere from Star Trek and the X-Files to Cheers and Moonlighting.

Of course! Tom gets ignored by shippers as well because some of them feel/felt that Jane and Jesse were meant for one another. Which there is about zero chance of now (it would be slim even without Tom around). Jane is too quick and Jesse is too slow.

Maybe it's just the position I'm in as a viewer of the show - I started watching it this year when the ABC (Australian PBS, I think) reran all the episodes and then showed the third season. I'd seen the official website, of course, with its "upcoming epsiodes", so the whole way through it was - "Jane's gonna get a boyfriend! Boy, this'll throw a spanner in the Daria-Jane-friendship works!" The actual episode seemed a little ... anticlimactic. I mean, there really wasn't that much about Tom not to like.

I agree. And I think, actually, that that was a masterstroke of writing, becuase it kept the dramatic focus on the effect on Daria & Jane's relationship of Jane going out with someone. If there had been something patently to dislike, then Daria's reaction could have been shrugged off by the viewer ("Well, I'd dislike a jerk like that, too."), and Daria wouldn't have had to confront the sources of her reaction.

That was the point. They've already done the "Jane foolishly goes too far with a stranger" and "Jane gets a crush on a snotty guy" plots ("Invitation" and "See Jane Run" respectively). In "Jane's Addition" we get to see Jane fall for someone truly nice, and Daria is STILL hostile to him. This demonstrated a nasty side of Daria's character.

So when Tom was presented in his first episode as a relatively generic guy, it threw me a little.

Of course, if Tom is going to be hanging around, getting a big part and influencing the whole Daria-Jane-(Trent?) dynamic, then a more open-ended characterization would make sense. So I stand corrected.

In my admittedly brief foray into the fanfiction, I've seen her portrayed as an alcoholic, a druggy, some form of new-ager (either satanist or wiccan) the stereotypical White-Trash Mansonite you see on Ricki Lake... and even as nothing more than a less intelligent version of Daria with a more extreme style. (Okay, that last one is just my personal snap-judgement based on her one line in Daria Dance Party, where she seemed to be used as a vehicle to deliver a Daria-esque line to Brittany in a situation where Daria could not conceivably be.)

Except to Daria at first. It'll be interesting to see what the other characters think of Tom. Excluding Jane we know of only 2 characters who know and have opinions of Tom. Daria, who didn't like him at first, but is tolerating him, and Trent, who seems to like him. When his character is more developed and more of the surrounding cast share their opinions of him, only then we will truly know enough to form an opinion on Tom.

My guess is he goes to the next school over, whatever that would be. If he isn't yet in college. The only way I can see him interacting with other cast members is maybe (a) if Jane were to take him to a Lawndale dance, if it were likely Jane would do such a thing, or (b) if he were competing against Lawndale in some kind of event (like a debate). I think he'll probably be limited to showing up occasionally at Jane's house or hanging out at Pizza King. It should be interesting, though; I still think she'll be protective of Jane as far as Tom's concerned...it wouldn't take much for her to turn against him.

I didn't necessarily mean that Tom all of a sudden be thrust into Lawndale High, there are other places that Daria and Jane have been with other classmates around, and don't forget most of the cast does meet at the pizza place every now and then, so its a definite possibility for Tom to meet some of the regulars, I'd be paticularly interested to see Jane's parents reaction if they were ever around, or the rest of the Morgendorffers reaction to him.

    I wonder if Tom's situation will be similar to that of Trent's. Trent
hasn't really interacted all that much with the people of Lawndale High. I
mean, unless they have Tom on the show on a regular basis, I don't know if
he'll be much of a factor in that regard. As for Jane's folks, they seem sort
of oblivious to what's going on in her life.So I don't know if they'd "respond"
to Tom.

A shipper is someone who wants to see a relationship between two characters on a tv show. Such as an "X-Files shipper" is someone who wants Mulder and Scully to get together.

For Daria, a shipper is someone who wants Trent and Daria get together.

There are also people called "Anti-shippers" who DON'T want there to be a romane between the two characters.
