just WHERE is lawndale?

I've heard suggestions ranging everywhere from Georgia to California. I have this theory that people tend to lean towards their own home states. but anyway, Let's review the facts, shall we?

1. In the opening sequence, everyone's dressed pretty warmly to be outside at this sporting event (football, most likely). Assuming it is football, the way people are dresssing isn't all that unusual, considering it gets pretty chilly at night just about everywhere in fall. All in all, the weather in Lawndale is pretty mild, seeing the only kind of precipitation is rain. But there is quite a bit of rain, i think. In fact, most of the plots in the shows seem to rely on rain as a joke in one way or another.

"oh, it can't rain on daphne's (?) wedding, it just can't!" ~"i don't"

"oh, good, i was feeling too dry." ~the daria hunters"

It rains on the library in "fair enough" and there is a thunderstorm in "gifted" and, of course, there was the storm in "monster" that caused daria and jane to catch a ride with mr. o'neil.

So, it rains a lot in and around Lawndale. Also, Lawndale and the city that beavis and butthead lived in (forgive me, i can't remember the name of it) were within driving distance, as stated in the Daria Diaries, (they never mentioned a plane or train, and daria talks about getting a ride with the moving guys) so we can probably place them in about the same region.

2. No one in lawndale seems to have any kind of regional accent. except for dr. sharr, but i think she was faking it to try to get more attention. Anyway, dr. sharr's accent was southern-ish. but besides her, nothing.

3. there just isn't that much ethnic diversity in lawndale. to my knowledge, jodie's family and mack's family seem to be the only black families. Tiffany, i think, is asain-american. am i wrong about this?

so, let's recap. lots of rain. no regional accents. not much ethnic diversity. what do you think?

I think Lawndale is in a state like Connecticut, but I have no idea really. Maybe theres a way to find out..

I was thinking Lawndale was in California, Because Highland (Where BEavis and Butt-head was set) was either in California or Texas,Remember the Mexican Border? So im guessing Lawndale is in California.

Ok, my mistake. But English is not my native language (dutch is) and if you see the many mistakes made on usenet which I even see, you must have a day-job sending these messages. But you probably pointed this out because my remark was (somewhat) arogant (or whatever way you write it) and I humbly apologise to those who were offended. My sarcasm sometimes gets out of hand.

Bas, I've been to Lawndale, CA, and it is most assuredly *not* the same place as shown on Daria. Now, Highland, CA, could be considered a reasonable facsimile for the location of B&B-H, although, given Mike Judge's roots, Texas is the most likely location.

Ultimately, the true location of the cities is *in your television*.

Well, I grew up in Highland, CA. Assuming that is that you're talking about the Highland located near San Bernardino. It was nothing like what's on TV. And from what I've heard, the Highland in B&B was supposed to be in Texas.

I've always wondered about this. In the opening sequence, there is a black girl in our upper left corner. She's wearing a volleyball outfit along with the other girls. Does she go to Lawndale or was she a visting team? Also, in "Gifted", I think, Helen ask Daria why she isn't in the Tennis Club and Daria responds "Because it's classified as a sport." Why was she playing volleyball in the opening sequence?

Probably for the same reason she and Jane were in "cheerleading practice" in "See Jane Run": They made her do it. You'll notice that she's not particularly enthused about the game. :-)

I see it exactly the same way. Unfortunately, this was screwed over in "See Jane Run", when several other black characters appear (during the scene with the crowd surrounding Jane after she quits).

Well, that's fine. In fact, there are several states that have a Lawndale. It's a nice, generic, suburban-village name. I have to point out, though, that that DOESN'T mean that the Lawndale of "Daria" is in any way related to ANY Real- Life Lawndale. Daria's set in a non-descript suburban commuter town, somewhere in the US. But TDH said it best earlier in this thread: "The true location of Lawndale is *in your television*." If there's an official Daria FAQ somewhere, I recommend that to be the definitive answer for "Where is Lawndale?" This thread has gone on repeating itself and meandering along aimlessly long enough.
