You are not an idiot, Deja sometimes has these really gah awful lulls where it simply will not work. I do remember the at-least-two times when it completely, utterly refused to work properly as a newsgroup agent. 'Tis one of the reasons why I'm really liking this whole "posting with Netscape's newsgroup reader" thing. You don't know how glad I am that this option is now available for me. Wait, receiving transmission..."WELCOME TO SUBURBAN BERLIN!"...OK, all better now :o)
Speaking of deja, someone recently posted this fabulous piece of html to alt.folklore.computers which creates a simple search form that allows you to access dejanews without all the usual crap. Just cut and paste it into a file (eg. using windows notepad) and save or rename it as a html document ("deja.html" for instance), and then open it when you're online and you can use it to look up newsgroup postings really easy.
Oh, thank you so much for the HTML coding! That's mainly why I go back to Deja these days...that and to check on any old e-mail I may get. Thank you tons...this is a real treat. :)

Agreed. Actually I read Alt.tv.daria through OE but the news server won't let me post, and the News server that came with my ISP don't have a.t.d. So I am forced, reluctantly, to use Deja.
Yeah, reading news with a web browser sucks big time. But deja comes in handy when you need to search for stuff, assuming of course that their service is actually working at the time - people have been reporting huge discrepancies from day to day when submitting the same search query. Someone trying to find reports on some event that happened a couple of years ago said they got no matches one day and about 100 the next!
Actually, it won't do what I was referring to, which is look up old posts on newsgroups. I know how to post without Deja; that's what I'm doing right now (and I'm doing it with a Netscape news reader, which I like much better than Outlook...just MO, 'tis all).
*yawn*...OK, that's enough for me for a while...went to sleep at 1 a.m. last night, had to wake up at 3:45 a.m. to go to work, am thusly very much out of it....

Yeah-- I loved Free Agent so much, I popped for the $40 and got the full version. It's perfectly suited for newsgroups, once you get the hang of it. ;-) Netscape's NR is okay, but not nearly as flexible. The best part of FA is the ability to use a variety of sig lines. ;-) And while it thoroughly ignores html, it will allow you to launch the browser of your choice if you double-click on a link. Cool.

I almost forgot-- the other reason i love FA is that after you select a message for download, when it gets it, it always tells you, "Finished retrieving bodies." So, not only is it getting messages for you, it's also retrieving bodies for you as well-- handy if you're a mad scientist-type.

Yeah, the devotion and loyalty of Chicagoans to their Cubs is admirable. I'm happy for those Spurs, too. To me, them beating the Knicks is like a triumph for good over evil (being from Philly, I have an extreme dislike for all New York area sports teams -- Go Phils, boo Mets).
Now that is sweet! That's one reason why I don't like take extended vacations away from my office/lab because I don't have internet access at home (at that's also why you rarely hear from me on the weekends). Regrettfully, I have the rest of the week off :( and I really do miss this place.

They are/were a great band, yes. They're my second favorite musical artist behind Duran Duran (and that's saying *a lot*, knowing how much music I like).
As for whether or not their material is available on CD...yes, of course...a simple search on cdnow.com will pop up a number of their releases on CD, as well as a simple search on gemm.com. I found my "In Vogue" CD at a local music chain called "CD Exchange", which is really cool because you don't often find their material on ANY format anywhere (trust me, it took me a YEAR to hunt down this one album).
One great URL devoted to Japan is vzone.virgin.net/japan.assemblage -- great for finding lyrics, discography, plus loads of great pics and rare songs (like the instrumental version of "Life in Tokyo").
ObDaria: Wouldn't Daria herself love this band? Their lyrics are poetic and grounded in the notion that what we're living in is the real world.
