What on earth?

Okay,

I caught today's "Daria" during lunch-- I moved to office to my house-- it's a lot cheaper that way (plus I get deductions, too.) Anyway, as the credits roll, this dude who sounds like he's been drinking the bong water starts blathering all over the end credits about how sexy a cartoon character can be. What the hell is going on over there? Is MTV starting to use C5's methods for promoting its programs? Ick.

Naturally, this should make every anal-retentive taper nervous, too, because if MTV starts doing this daily, it'll soon become impossible to get a clean set of tapes-- at least clean in the sense that there isn't any moronic observations over the end credits. :P Dammit.

rich.

Daria: Sorry, with all of this animation, I thought I was on Nickelodeon for a moment.

Jane: You wish.

Daria: Tell me about it.

I've sometimes wondered if MTV's screwing around wasn't a calculated plan to make it impossible for fans to tape the show. That way they open a market for selling recordings, DVDs maybe. OK, if that's the plan then why not get on with it? Show of hands: Who'd like to buy a boxed collector's edition of DVDs of all the Daria episodes? It's hard to imagine that as money-grubbing an outfit as Viacom would pass up such an opportunity.

<Hand shoots up> Me! A good, sequential, clean set, including episode bumpers (at least one beginning, and include all the endings, since the end songs and the alter-egos are as much a part of all things Daria as the episodes themselves). Actually, couldn't one potentially put _all_ the episodes on one DVD? I know you could put a season on it. And, when I think about it, production costs wouldn't be that huge. I could probably do it with a cheap AV i/o video card and the inevitable DVD burner.

But, from a business sense, I must admit that if I owned the rights to the show, I would wait for it. If I went and sold the shows on DVD, I couldn't keep squeezing out a profit from commercial spaces. As long as people will keep watching it on MTV (or C5), it is to their advantage not to do so. However, if I were them, I would make sure to make a complete archive available for purchase *before* the show dies (as all inevitably do), so there'll still be interest in buying it. Either that or leave it in the back room for ten years and then bring it out and sell it. That'd make money, too, but I don't think that's fair to the fans...

And don't forget extensive program notes, outtakes, and interviews. One thing, for example: I'd hope for copies of BOTH versions of the credits for "I Don't".

That theory pretty well fits with MTV's seeming intentional efforts to ruin taping. I guess it's a little like those D.W. Griffith silents. In the early days of film, they were plagued by piracy so they namestamped frames frequently. Not that much unlike inserting a little icon in the corner of the screen.

Just remember: Viacom also owns Star Trek. They seem to have done prospered with that show, though it probably enjoys a somewhat larger fan base than Daria. There was a time when I was absolutely enamored with Star Trek. I still watch it, but now I'm a Daria fan, I'm in love with the brainy chick. It took a few years to figure out how to make money out of a property like Star Trek. Maybe it won't take so long for Daria.

I'm just so jiggy with this!

I guess they just wanna make more money. If I owned the rights, I don't just make a DVD, I'd make Cd's, lots of stuff...

Well they DIDN'T do it for the Cafe Disaffecto airing yesterday, so maybe it'll just be a one-time thing... needless to say I started yelling at the TV screen when that happened. Just a good thing I already HAVE this episode taped....

Remember this is the same network that has produced such thought provoking dribble as the (kinda, sorta, almost) Real World and Road(kill) Rules. Occasionally, they fuck-up and televise something worthwhile like Daria. On a side note... Is it just me or is Kurt Loder an animatronic construct? I'm always waiting for one of his servos to fail causing him to start spastically banging his head against the desktop.

Oh well, one can dream...

Maybe they could do something like that on Celebrity Deathmatch.

They're at it again!

They did it again today with some very lame announcement with the announcer trying to sing part of the Daria theme.

Down with the capitalist pigs. Up the proletariat Daria masses.

Is it me, or was the announcer Tracy Grandstaff herself? The voice was strikingly identical to Daria's voice, and considering that Tracy herself has done some announcing on MTV before, I'd think it very likely.

It seems ironic that she would spoil part of her own TV show, but I guess you don't mess with the folks who pay your salary....

While I agree that RW and RR are not the smartest things on TV, I often wonder why the get such a bad rap. They can be compelling if given the chance. They are addictive, though. Like those Behind the Music shows on VH1. I actually watched the ones about Vanilla Ice and Milli Vannili(sp?). If they can make Tony Orlando seem interesting...

Animatronic? Wouldn't that imply that he is somewhat animated? He is as lifless as a beanbag chair. Those little plastic minnows they sell as bait that is guarenteed to catch fish have more life to them.

LOL! They should make that a weekly series -- I don't think anyone out there likes Kurt Scroder (hehe... he said scroder... hehe...)

In a nutshell? I think they insult the intelligence of their target audience. For example, take their latest offering RW Hawaii. What's up wit dat? Why don't they throw in some gratuitous violence to go with the T&A. I've seen porno movies with better content. I don't know what *real world* these wanks used as reference, but it's nowhere near our planetary system. (I do like the blond bimbette with the big knockers, tho.)

So can shiny beads and mirrors if you're bored enough.

I have to agree with you here... Behind the Music actually has some merit. I'm still waiting for them to do one on Trent Reznor. :)

LMAO! Yes, Kurt definitely has a future announcing NASCAR races.

Except himself, maybe.

To be honest I haven't noticed C5 doing this over the Daria end credits for quite a while. They seemed to stop when people complained about them on this newsgroup (coincidence or C5 lurking? Who knows?). The only instance of them crashing the end credits that I can remember for a good long time was them apologising to people in some region or other for transmitter problems during the preceding broadcast of Daria.

Credit where it's due (unless it's just the Alzheimer's catching me up and eating my memory, and C5 are actually crashing every end credit there is but I've forgotten).

Tony PS if Channel 5 /are/ lurking, what about Twin Peaks series 2? Eh? Eh? PPS MTV starts today on ONdigital. Finally I'll get to see what everyone's moaning about! (though it is EuroMTV, not the US version)
Trevor Morrispaperpusher

Don't Complain, On YTV we have Howie the headlice super imposed in the screen reminding children to wash their hair at the end of each daria, While the actual credits are panned to the side making the alter-egos invisable.

A DVD full of Daria is a terrific idea, but don't expect anything that practical from the Network that brought us Tom Green! and 5 Years of Beavis and Butthead!

This is the Tom Green show! It's not the Green Tom show! This is my favorite show! Because it is my show!

Now that is the kind of high quality writing you just won't find on the real world or road rules.
