Well, After being online for ages I ventured into a chat room for the first time, I figured I would glance at the Daria Chatroom on MTV.com,

Basically here is a snapshot of what appears to be a typical discussion.

panda69: Tom sucks, Daria should marry Trent killerpimp: WHO WANTZ TA CYBER? Dariaphile: A\S\L? Tinkerbell: Who wants to trade nude pictures?

Essencially those 4 lines repeat adnasuain.

I then ventured to the message boards, I SWEAR these are actual postings in their unaltered state!

I think you shouldn't be dictating the behavior of fictional characters

Well, yeah, it's what I'd expect to see, I suppose. It's all part of what I like to call the "AOL-ization of the Internet." Anyone who's been there can tell you that what you've quoted above is EXACTLY what occurs in the AOL chatrooms. A lot of people now are online who didn't even know how to turn a computer on a few years ago (and in some cases, still don't). This is due to AOL and WebTV, who basically cater to morons. It's a safe bet that at least 99% of the people on that mtv.com chat and message board are AOL subscribers and/or WebTV users.

Luckily for us, Usenet is not particularly popular, and in fact most people still don't even know it exists, so it's sort of a weeding-out process that takes place (yes, I know that sounds elitist). Actually, this newsgroup is somewhat exceptional even for Usenet, in that it's comprised of a rather large number of really intelligent folks. Still though, I don't think I've ever seen a Usenet newsgroup whose regulars come close to the drooling, Neanderthalesque level of an AOL chatroom. Try going to one of them if you've never done it, it's really depressing. It can really make you lose all hope for humanity (if you had any in the first place). :) I just keep telling myself, "It's a bunch of white-trash 13 year olds and horny old men who can't type well because one hand is down their pants all the time, it's not representative of the general population, most people aren't this dumb..."

Those idiots behind the "Internet Appliances" should be round up and shot. have you seen this thing www.globalpc.com ? This is going to do wonders for the quality of discourse online.

I have never had the misfortune of having to use AOL, and from my first and almost certainly last internet chat experiance I dont think I could stomach what takes place on AOL.

You can get a Power Macintosh 7200/120 with monitor for about $250, or a Pentium 200 if you perfer for about the same amount. both can handle basic internet just fine.

So yes, you CAN afford the alternitive, you simply chose not to!

Why do you think I keep my message board low-profile? Or my whole site, for that matter? The AOL-ization of the net is sad, but it's the way things always go. You make something nice and wonderful, and before you know it, the teeming hordes get their grubby fingerprints all over it, destroying it in the process because they don't understand it.

Personally, I'm GLAD MTV set up that message board and chat room-- it's a wonderful lightning-rod for the trolls and losers I'd otherwise have to deal with on a regular basis on the net. ;-)

In a thread below I also offered up a little samplin' of the chat room . . . nothing that bad, though, I have to say. What is it with people having sex with Daria characters anyway? Is there something that I'm missing out on here? :) Anyway, I peeked in there again earlier after reading this to look at the message board (I didn't even know there WAS a message board . . .), and that's even worse than the chat room. Not because the posts there are any less brilliant (ha), but because the comments made on the message board were obviously thought by their authors to be meaningful observations worth sharing. After all, somebody took the time and effort to make those posts . . . and I can only hope it wasn't _much_ time and effort. :) Every day it gets harder to find a group of people worth chatting with on the Internet . . .

Well, no offense, but the person who wrote that really didn't say anything to reveal that their personal life is being sacrificed by posting those thoughts about Daria. I mean, your response could be applied to *all* the threads that are posted here.

Oh, sorry. I'm not trying to defend the losers at the MTV board/ chatroom...I wonder if the people who routinely visit there believe they are "experts" on Daria? Missed two enitre seasons? That Robert guy who wanted to pick up a chick sounded like a real loser. ;) Thanks for the info on the MTV site. I went there once (the chatroom) and it was just a bunch of girls from Georgia talking about their personal situations. That was enough to keep me out for a lifetime.
