I have thus far seen a grand total of one, single, solitary episode of Daria. I didn't like it at first, but the more I think about it, the more I giggle at some of the oddities I saw and heard.
I have been informed by a reliable sauce (well, she tasted pretty good to me) that this is a cool group to hang out with, so here I am, hanging out, oh yes.
So... erm... there you have it.
I'm not likely to be as regular as I'd like to be (I really need those rolled oats), because of internet restrictions and stuff (BLEH) but I'll join in if I can, so beware.
I remember that scene from "The Shawshank Redemption"! Remember when they finally got that prisoner to break down and cry, only to have him beaten savagely by the guards who caught him going insane? That was incentive for me to walk the straight and narrow for the rest of my life.
Daria.

Hehehe. :) "Repeat after me, fuck queen and country, Repeat after me, death sentence heritage, Repeat after me, death camp palace...." Etc, etc. :) Not my favorite Manics song, but it was the first thing that came into my head when I read Kyle's sentence. :)
HAHA I don't believe you actually raised your hand!
Oh yeah, everyone... When I said she tasted good to me, I wasn't referring to anything naughty, just kissies. Don't want to ruin a good girl's reputation here. Or mine, come to that!

Oh yeah. Didn't think of that.

Wow, for a change some lyrics I actually recognize. Of course, it doesn't hurt that I became a new music lover in 1991...and a teenager in 1992. I loved that type of music too. Way too much information for you, right?

Daria is about a teenage girl, coping with her life as best she can. This includes the all mighty defense mechanism that is cynicism. Daria is cynical, yes. That does not mean the show always portrays cynicism in a positive light. It alienated her best friend in "See Jane Run", for example.

So what is it exactly (or even approximately) that makes you believe your interpretation of the show is definitive? Can you put forward a well-reasoned argument defending your point of view? If not, I advise that you shut up before you make an arse of yourself.
So how intelligent *are* you? You have shown me no evidence of having anything other than a probable inferiority complex and a degree of misfortune - unless you singled me out at random as "the stupid one" - as the evidence against me being stupid is strong enough to convince even myself and I am therefore not going to be affected *too* badly by being called stupid. Next piece of "advise": try actually putting forward an argument next time, instead of attempting to convince yourself and/or everyone else that the person you're talking to is an idiot.
So, then, TDH, as you're such a big fan of Dejanews, would you care to remind me when I said Daria was a cautionary tale against cynicism? FWIW, I think Daria is a cartoon and people shouldn't take it too seriously. It's not a cautionary tale against cynicism, it's a vehicle for advertisments and thus a way for MTV to make money. It just so happens that I find amusing and enjoy watching it.
More importantly, I feel you should explain to the group why it is you're right, so we can gain some insight on the "reasoning" behind the opinions you keep throwing at us. I can see no problem with you stating your opinions, just so long as you: a) don't expect others to share them, b) don't insult those who don't share them, and c) back them up without resorting to insulting those who don't share them.
And more importantly than that, I think you should answer to someone instead of attempting to divert the discussion onto something else. Of course, your habit of wussing out of confrontations in which you don't know what you're talking about would be far more tolerable if you could carry it off with some degree of subtlety; also, if you didn't appear to be under the impression that your "diversions" made you look more intelligent: "Oh, it's so *obvious* I don't even *need* to point it out, you must be *really* thick!" No, I'm not brain-dead, I'm just proving a point - or letting you prove my point for me, as it happens. This is more insulting to my intelligence, incidentally - I'm not even having to do anything to make you look like a prat.
Neither. I was attacking you because of the way you presented your opinion - ie, you didn't present it as an opinion at all, you presented it as a solid fact which I hope you will admit it is not.
Fair enough.
I recognise that all the music I listen to is a source of income for the artists who made it. That doesn't detract from my enjoyment of it, and I try not to get stuck in "what it means" because IMO it means very little to the "producers" of the music: it's a source of income and sometimes/usually (debateable <g>) also a source of entertainment/"release" of sorts for the people writing and/or performing the songs.
Yes, I can see that. This may or may not be a bad thing.
I also have the right to express my opinions, which is what I was doing there, hence the words "I think". And I also think you could do with learning that little phrase. And of course practicing it always helps.
I didn't say you did. I was taking the piss, just in case you need any clarification.
Tough shit, TDH, you're not going to get much out of life if you can't learn to get along with others. I've only been here 16 years but I've learnt that much.
Wrong...... she was attacking you for not being discursive and asking you for an acount of your position. You then told her that she was not worthy of your reasoning on the basis that she held an opinion she at no point claimed to hold.

And you continue to avoid the question. Dude, I am of the opinion that you are a pompous, self righteous idiot, and yet, when I decide to berate you, I write as if you might yet see my point. At least others can see my point.
To take this from your point of view, you refuse to answer Alli's question because you are convinced she couldn't possibly begin to understand your answer. What about others on the group? At least if you made a good argument, and others understood, and Alli dismissed it out of hand, that would make _her_ the idiot, not you....
But then again, that's not going to happen, is it? ;)

You're probably right. I just went for inferiority complex because superiority complexes are so far beyond my comprehension it's hard for me to believe they even exist. :)
Kyle, either you're not fulfilling your "soul purpose" or you forgot something or both... ;)
I don't think so. It can get a lot more "interesting" when you totally disagree with the other person, which is why I have tried so bloody hard to get a discussion going with you! <g>
They probably think you're the off-base one. What would you say to that? What makes *you* right rather than them? Are you capable of explaining it?, because if not, there's really no point in you even *having* an opinion, let alone expressing it, IMO.
I think you're not a big fan of arguing, am I right? ;) Both Paul and myself will go to great lengths to get into an argument, although with Paul "trolling" the objectivist ngs <g> and me being an alt.music.nirvana regular, neither of us has to make much effort most of the time. <g>
I saw the word "some", but "some" to me implied "most" or "all" or at least "some including one who has virtually taken over the newsgroup" or whatever it was you said about my excessive posting, I have forgotten now.
Hahaha, yes <lol>! I think there's only about two people here that'll get that one, unless I mentioned it on here at some point... Oh dear... <lol again>
Anyhow, ignoring the fact that I rate the Foo Fighters little higher than Celine Dion, I would rather find out what's going on inside the head of someone with a differing opinion than talk to someone I agree with, because I can already understand their opinion.
OK, I agree with Kyle, mostly. Not sure about the "coping with her life as best she can" bit, although it is, to an extent at least, true IMO. I'm just not sure that's the "emphasis".
And you would in such a situation have no desire to know why the person saying that thought like that? You could probably make a pretty accurate assumption/generalisation, but I like trying to find *some* reasoning in people. Everyone has reasons, some of them may seem twisted, but who's to say *they* are the twisted ones? <g> Discussing things with people who disagree is more varied, and also can help you consider other perspectives. I'm not arrogant enough to say that I have thought over *everything* I have an opinion on from *every* point of view because obviously that's impossible. Also, if I don't discuss things with people holding different opinions, how am I to know what the other points of view are?
I find arguing much less amusing when there's a point. I mean, if there's a point it's more "serious", and it matters who's wrong and who's right, etc.
Uh, what? I believe I've already said this, it's not what you think, it's the way you act as though it's a given fact and *everyone* should know it and it's so *obvious* you can't believe anyone thinks differently. I never got that impression of JB or Kyle. I wasn't so much objecting to your opinion as it is perfectly valid *as an opinion*, but it's not valid as a fact, which is how you put it across.
I don't have very strong opinions on things I don't care about. That's why I didn't participate in the discussion. I started at you not because I disagreed with your view, but because I disagreed with the way you gave your view, ie I felt you were being an arrogant cunt and telling other people their opinions were wrong. The right of people to have opinions is something I feel more strongly about, and this is why *that* was what I started arguing about. I don't care what Daria is about, so I didn't try to add anything to the discussion on that. You asked who I agreed with, and I told you. I believe I have also stated that I don't think it matters.
OK, listen... I'm sorry, deeply sorry, that I haven't discussed Daria in a New Moon on Monday (*g*). But when there's so little to talk about that hasn't already been discussed, it's hard to be able to figure out WHAT "on topic" thing to talk about. Half the really cool observations I make are pointed out by others before I get the chance to point them out (not complaining, though). Besides, our discussions are trillions of times better than the downtime discussion on alt.music.duran-duran (loads of eBay announcements and little else).
Well, there is plenty difference between the Foo Fighters and Celine Dion -- Celine Dion beats her chest ceaselessly during her live performances and the Foo Fighters create really great rock songs, for one. Um....
Getting back on focus here...Alli's been really nice with me, even though we've got our differences. Alli's been nice with practically everyone I've seen on the ng...well, everyone who counts, that is (i.e. also makes an effort to get along with others here). So there.
OK, is there even a centralized OFFICIAL idea of what the actual focus of the show is? I don't think so. I think everyone's idea of what the gist of "Daria" the show is is slightly different from everyone else's. That's the beauty part about being an individual...you have your own IDEAS. "Daria" to me is about how one teenage girl sees life in Suburban America (as opposed to Suburban Berlin *g*), but you could see it as a study of an alien family posing as an upper-middle-class family and I'd be peachy with it, just so long as you declare it's YOUR idea.
OK, time to snip some compelling discussion. I agree with Alli, btw.

Same one you are. We just see it in reference to the world in which we live. My world is different than yours, and thus my view of the show is different from yours. But I shouldn't have to point this out.
