....named after DeWitt Clinton Park in New York City? (A place I discovered while surfing the web. 52nd St & 11th Ave.) So who's the park named after?

Hmmph. Describing DeWitt that way is like describing George Washington as "the notoriously incompetent general who lost the Battle of Long Island and later padded his expense account." And he generally *is* remembered for the Erie Canal - AltaVista search of "DeWitt Clinton" and "spoils system" pulls up 3 pages of links; substitute "Erie Canal" for "spoils system" and you get 20 pages of links.

Like I said, I know *way* too much about all that.

I'm going to try and track that down. It was attributed to him on a website, and no further information was given, so it may be spurious, but it's a good quote - if I can authenticate it I'll make it one of my regular .sigs.

Clinton's political opponents mocked him as an airy-headed idealist for believing that the Erie Canal project was feasible; the writers may also have had that in mind.

I really didn't know anything about DeWitt Clinton other than that he ran for president once and lost. Though the Erie Canal bit rang a bell. It's been a *long* while since I last studied that in grade school.

I know how you feel. Having spent my early years in the Detroit area, I'd hate to see Henry Ford's life reduced to "he financed and promoted an anti-Jewish periodical" (though unfortunately he did) and pass over the fact that he had something :-) to do with the growth of the auto industry, which employed many of my relatives and neighbors (including at least one Jewish neighbor who worked for Ford Motor Company - though well after Henry's death).

But we no longer have Richard Nixon *or* DeWitt Clinton to kick around anymore. :-)

Hmmm. Interesting thought. Ted didn't succeed in re-allocating yearbook pages away from traditional activities, so I guess building a major canal is easier than that. :-)

Nah. I was only born there; I was raised in Binghamton and (groan) Rensselaer, NY. Most of what I know about DeWitt Clinton comes from reading I did on my own, though. Come to think of it, so does most of what I know about everything else!

Don't they brew Genny Cream Ale in Rochester? That puts it one up on Buffalo, in my opinion. (Not Genesee *beer*; it has to be Cream Ale. I mean, I'm not *crazy*...^_^) Can't get the Cream Ale out here in Oregon, and so far haven't found anything nearly as smooth among the local brews. Best cheap buzz I ever had...

There is a joke here about American beer, but I'll save that for another day. I did once try something called "Pete's Chocolate Ale" which was made with toasted malt (no chocolate involved, it was called that because of the colour) which was supposed to be an American beer, but most of the stuff we get here from the US is the lager derived stuff which I can't stand. That isn't a reflection on US beer, it's just that I hate lager, no matter where it comes from.

I mostly agree with you (which is why I specifically excluded Genesee 'beer'). It's the result of an unfortunate historical accident, namely that most of the Germans who came to this country and set up successful breweries were from regions of Germany where lager was popular. The modern canned mutations aren't even recognizable lagers, in my opinion. The best bet if you're in America is to seek out the beers made by small local breweries - it's not too difficult to find a good hefeweizen, for example. But Coors, Michelob, Budweiser and the rest are musts to avoid. (I never cared that much for the various 'Pete's' but some of the Sam Adams beers are good.)

There's also a DeWitt Clinton High School somewhere in New York. It was always my guess that Glenn or someone on the staff went there, and that's where Ted got his last name..
