Is there any truth to the rumor that there is a "Daria" movie in the works? Live-action, no less? With Jennifer Love Hewitt as Daria? *lol* That page is kinda funny, but it's definately NOT true. (Thank God!) Even MTV would be able to find a better live action Daria than Hewitt. Personally, I think Janeane Garofalo would be the only known actress that could possibly play a convincing Daria if MTV was actually foolish enough to do a non-cartoon version, but even Garofalo is kind of old for the part. I'm pretty twisted though, so don't take my word on it.

There are no listings for a Daria movie in either the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com) or Corona's Coming Attractions (www.corona.bc.ca/films) web site. These two pages are usually the first to know when ANYTHING is in production, in pre-production, or if it's just being discussed by a bunch of Hollywood suits.

Not that I wouldn't want to see a Daria movie (as long as it wasn't a musical) I think the success of the Beavis and Butthead movie and the South Park movie might entice MTV to make an animated film out of the show.

I think that there would have to be a huge explosion of new fans/ratings for that to happen. Right now, and I am not in the know, I don't have the Nielsen ratings in front of me or anything, but I think Daria is pretty much a "cult" show. At least in comparison to those other two shows. I mean, Beavis & Butthead was a huge phenomenon when it came out... it was pretty huge, like for me, I was in 8th or 9th grade when it came out and all of a sudden all these kids were going, "Uh huh huh" and "Fire!" and all this crap, you know? So after months and months of that, and even scandals, and senators talking about the effect of B&B on the minds of innocent children because it was on at 7:30 at night, and some trailer trash mommy left her four-year-old alone and he burned the trailer down and so on, basically as a result of all that there's hardly anybody left on the planet who doesn't know what Beavis & Butthead is. So a movie was pretty much a guarantee once it took off. And South Park was pretty much the same way (sans scandals, oddly enough).

Daria is a wonderful show but it's more subdued, it doesn't play off being outrageous and so doesn't get the attention it deserves. That being said, a movie probably isn't completely out of the question, it would just be hard for it to find its audience; actually it would probably be even harder convincing the movie execs that people would go see a Daria movie. Maybe if they did that episode someone suggested where they follow Daria into the bathroom and show her showering and pooping and masturbating (not necessarily in that order) then suddenly millions of the same people who pay to see that stuff on the internet would start watching the show, ratings would shoot through the roof, and then bing-o bang-o, you got yerself a movie deal! And then they would all go to the movie and it would be, like, a 2 1/2 hour epic about what college Daria wants to go to, and we could laugh and laugh and laugh at the silly fools who paid to see Daria's tits on the big screen (if it was live action and she was portrayed by Jennifer Love Hewitt, all the funnier when they have to sit through 3 hours of her wearing loose, completely unrevealing clothing and never so much as showing a bare ankle). But we wouldn't care, 'cause we'd have our movie, darn it! Ha ha ha!

Interesting related note... I have a friend who is a lesbian, and just turned 20 years old. I think she could do a WICKED Daria, and I have to remember to ask her about being Daria and Trent for Halloween this year. If they did do a live action (yecch) Daria movie, I think my lesbian friend would be ideal. She looks/acts/talks almost exactly like Daria... except for the lesbian deal.

*X-Files theme starts playing in background* Could it be possible MTV *gasp* wants Daria to fail???? An animated television series take more time to produce and often costs more money than a simple live-action show. There's no way MTV execs could possibly think Daria's fan's are a match for SP's in the same time slot. To me, it looks like MTV is not trying to combat Comedy Central, and is actually admitting defeat by placing Daria there. They could've easily put some typical cheap MTVish stuff in the same slot (like the Blame Game or Loveline), and still made a little bit of cash because of the low production costs of those shows. However, in the long run, doesn't it make more sense to get rid of an expensive cult show in which most of the faithful viewers hardly ever stay tuned to the MTV after it's over??? In my own house, the only reason I get to watch Daria at all is because my mom HATES South Park and rarely lets my younger brother watch it when she's home. I'm sure my situation is not uncommon. If MTV wanted to find an excuse to give Daria the axe, low ratings due to placement against South Park would definately look convincing.

Then again, what do I know?

By the way...The Man Show is terrible!!! Does anyone seriously think it'll last more than one or two seasons?

I have wondered the same thing here. Why put a show against that has the same viewers? Fortunately, I have two VCRs and can just watch whichever show whenever it is convenient. One wonders if this is something the MTV and CC execs think about when they program. But then again, D used to be on exclusively at 1030pm Eastern time on Monday nights. That was the case for most of the show's run. When exactly the Wednesday 10pm thing start? I do not remember. But I believe that SP was there before D was moved? No question about the cult following of the show. MTV makes a fortune in sales revenues year after year, show placement should not be a problem for them. But you do have to wonder what's up with the matchup with SP. Oh well, we are all at the mercy of the programmers at the networks. I think there is some merit to consideration that they are trying to kill the show off after another 13 episode season. Like BBH, it is getting the same treatment, but will probably survive a long to come in marathon runnings. At least one can only hope for it. And if there is to be a real movie made of D, get what's her name from the Addams Family movies to play the part. Um, trying to remember her name, oh yes, it is Christina Ricci? She would be a good D.

1) Wrestling may have had a part in moving the show off Mon. nights. Yes, I too am a fan, I often had to tape one, usually the wrestling and watch it after the Daria ep. aired.

Only 4 new Daria eps went up against new SP eps, when shows 306,308,309,and 310 aired, mind you 2 of those were the best of the season, but I digress... for the most part when a new Daria aired, SP was showing a rerun, so MTV has some sense there. But the move itself? I had the same thoughts as many of you there. When I first heard that, I thought to myself "What the f--- were they thinking?!" It still confuses me as to why they made that move. You wonder why they would take their 2nd highest rated show and place it against a show which is not necessecerily(sp?) good, but has a larger fan base and higher ratings. "It really makes you think..." Sometimes you have to wonder, with the treatment this show gets with scheduling, on air screw-ups, etc. you have to wonder if they are trying to bring this fine show down. I understand this example isn't perfect, but Fox did the same thng with "Married... with Children" 2 years ago. It did fine on Sunday nights for 10 seasons, for the 11th year they moved it to the virtual wasteland of TV known as Saturday night primetime, then moved it to Mondays mid-season, and the ratings dropped 40% and they cancelled the show. It was as if they tired of the show, but couldn't cancel it without a reason, and dropping ratings are a damn good reason. Would MTV be doing the same thing to Daria? One would hope not, one bright spot is that they ordered the 4th season midway through the 1st half of the 3rd season (from what i've read), why would they commit more money to the show if they were going to try to run it into the ground by scheduling it against SP? It goes against the single most important rule in TV today, MAKE AS MUCH MONEY AS POSSIBLE! <exiting rant zone>

I believe the Wednesday 10pm started with the first showing of "Daria!" (the musical) I have a tape of the Daria Day marathon leading up to it, and between episodes Jane mentions that the first showing of season three would be in the new time slot.

As for MTV putting "Daria" on at the same time as SP... well, it doesn't really matter, as both CC and MTV are owned by VIACOM. It's more of a "let's see how big of an audience we can get on all of our broadcast properties on Wednesdays at 10PM" sort of thing. I mean, as Mr. Korga says, there is just about -0- overlap in SP and Daria's target demographics... (And considering that SP's ratings are down over 40% since last summer, THEY're the ones who should be worried about being cancelled, TBQH.)

Either way, I don't think there's any "conspiracy" to ruin the show. It's too expensive to develop new shows, let alone new shows that get pretty decent ratings. (And Daria does get good ratings for cable, from what I heard last summer.) Again, does everyone remember "Super Adventure Team?" That one had a lot of good people behind it, and it still stunk on ice. (And got killed after #6 was shown, never to be seen again.) So, as Kate Botello would say, "Take a nice deep cleansing breath..." and relax. MTV may seem clueless sometimes, and may appear incompetent at times, but they aren't stupid. They know how costly it is in terms of time and $$ to develop a good show like Daria, and they know that if they killed it off prematurely, they'd alienate a pretty decent-sized chunk of their audience. (A part of their audience, I might add, that is the least likely to be regular MTV viewers--- an added bonus for them as it expands their potential viewership.)
