Who IS Tom, really?

Ok, so we've seen his house, we've seen his car, we've seen him majorly interrupt Jane and Daria's lives. But who IS this strange man? We all have theories, so let's have at it! *smirk* I'll start.

I think Tom is....Eric's son. Eric's a partner in a law firm, which accounts for the house and the school Tom goes to. Tom is obviously a relatively down-to-earth kid which means he wasn't handed things on a silver platter, also explaining his car. Look at Eric the next time you can. He *looks* like he could be Tom's dad, and he also *sounds* like it.

I agree with you. What makes this even more possible is that Lawndale really isn't all that big a town. For the intelligent children of two intelligent people in this small town to meet and fall in love wouldn't be improbable at all.

It _is_ interesting that Daria doesn't seem to know who Tom's father is, though. Then again, why would she have met him? Either at Helen's job (where she rarely goes) or Tom's house (where she also doesn't go)?

If Tom was Eric's son, you could throw "psycho Therapy" into this story arc, by saying something to the effect that the partnership she was so much closer to, would depend somewhat on their kids' relationship, maybe cliched a bit, but it could work.

Hmmm... maybe, but there is no real proof here. There are probably plenty of people in Lawndale whose income can support prep school. Hell, if Daria and Quinn (especially Quinn) weren't busy stripping Helen and Jake of thier liquid assets, the Morgandorffer girls could probably be in Tom's school, too.

After all, what other kids go to Tom's school? Maybe if MTV allowed another book (hint, hint) to update Lawndale?

Why would she, or who's to say she doesn't? There just hasn't been any reason for her to meet Tom's family yet, so it hasn't gotten any mention in any plots yet.

Patience, all will be revealed. Or not. I'm sure the fanfics will take liberties, regardless.

they better not do something that lame. i can't think of any way in which such a setup wouldn't lead to lame episodes. i really dislike the character of eric, and i've never cared much for the helen/eric "thing" (whatever it is) at all. i know that even the best fiction (or whatever medium you're talking about) has to have both "round" and "flat" characters, but eric is so damned flat and stereotypical it makes my blood boil. well, maybe not boil. actually, it doesn't cause any reaction whatsoever.

yeah, he was real cardboard. but they fleshed out his character quickly, probably about the time they realized "we can GO somewhere with this guy..." eric's been on enough to have a little more to him that his lack of a soul and some pretty obvious sexual tension with helen. but then again, i've met real-life stereotypes before, so maybe he's a realistic character.
