A clue! A clue! (Blue's Clues ref; hey so sue me, I watch Nickelodeon)
Let's take the clue and solve the mystery shall we? Let's see, the word 'shipper always turns up in Trent and Daria discussions, and Trent and Daria discussions are usually about their relationship. Usually, the discussion goes 2 ways, those who favor the relationship, and those who don't (there's also the middle wishy-washy group, but let's not take that into account here). Now let's see, between the groups who favors the relationship, and those who don't, which group can be more accurately identified as "'shipper"? Hmm, since "ship" is part of "relation-ship," a "ship" could be considered a short form of "relationship." And a "shipper" is someone who favors a relationship of some sort.
Now back to the question, what does a shipper mean in the Daria context? A shipper in this case simply means someone who favors the Trent and Daria relationship!
Okay okay, so it's all an act. I'm bored, give me a break will ya?
To add to that, Trent and Daria shippers are usually quite adamant with their belief that they're *meant* to be with each other. Whether they will or not is up to their imaginations - and of course, tons and tons of fanfic.
Other shows also have a shipper element to them. One of the more famous examples is the X-Files. X-Files shippers are those who want Mulder and Scully to get romantically involved. I can't remember any other shows with shipper elements to it, so feel free to suggest more.
I'm not too sure if it's a common word in *newsgroups* per say, but it is a common word in most fanbases across the globe.
I think your post should be added to the atd FAQ. I had always imagined 'shipper referred to Trent worshippers but I've obviously been labouring under a misapprehension (although I expect there's a big overlap between the two groups amongst female atd readers).
Come to think of it, I don't think the FAQ mentions the Trent Oestrogen Brigade either.
The Trent Estrogen Brigade (Coined by Michelle, I think) is the group of adolescent girls who watch the show entirely for Trent's thigh-sweating properties.
(Note: I believe it is Darianite law that the phrase "Trent Estrogen Brigade" must be followed at some point in the same sentence with the adjective "thigh-sweating", or some conjugated form thereof.)
Kyle He complained when I hit him. All my friends do. Wusses.
Did she? I could've sworn that it was me who coined that phrase. I *know* I'm the one who started spreading "screaming thigh sweats" around. :-) (Ewww... that sounds pretty disgusting, doesn't it?)

Don't be sorry, Kyle, because this *was* all quite a while ago, and my memory isn't what it used to be; you may very well end up being right after all.
Except for the thigh sweat part, of course. :-) (And I sure as hell don't remember where I ever got THAT one from! Though I'm sure it'll come to me, in time...)

Though it's unknown whether they've spawned fanfic, other shows that have a definite shipper feel to it (and this is far from being an all-inclusive list) are:
"Cheers" - Sam and Diane, and later Sam and Rebecca
"Moonlighting" - Mike and Mattie
"The Nanny" - Fran and Mr. Sheffield
Plus, the 30+ year history of "Star Trek" has spawned countless examples, beginning with -- and I'm not making this up -- Kirk and Spock. Back in the 1970s, writers of these stories were known as "K/S ladies," and these stories often were quite... ah... well, you get the picture. Seeing the Cheers one reminds me of the age old question as to whether resolving the sexual tension in a TV series spoils it. Many TV series were considered to have "jumped the shark" (peaked) when the relationship question was resolved. For more detailed info on a myriad of such TV shows, see <URL: http://www.jumptheshark.com> a rather amazing site in which viewers can give their angle on the many and varied reasons why TV series have gone from wired to tired. I haven't checked to see if there's an entry on Daria ... hopefully no-one yet thinks it's jumped the shark, though if the Daria / Trent thing was finally resolved I suspect many would do so.
Guess what? :-) No mention of Daria/Trent -- in fact, all comments except for two were of the "this show rules!" variety. One guy said that the show basically sucked from day one. Another said that it parasailed over the great white after a certain episode aired. Care to take three guesses as to which one it was? ;-)

"This is a show made by a brat, for brats who, like the twit who made it, think they're better than everyone else, smarter than everyone else, and should be worshiped as gods for their superiority."
The asshole who wrote this piece of shit better show their face to me so I can rearrange it a la Pablo Picasso. I can be rather mean with sharp objects and can show them what a true brat would look like with a bloodied face.
Tsk, tsk, one should never rise to the bait of the Troll. Remember, it's a Free Country (and in some countries, almost a Free Internet-- sorry, Australia), and people are allowed to be as obnoxious as they want to be (YMMV per country, natch.) But that doesn't mean that they have a right to make me respond to their puerile attempts at debate. They're free to try as much as they want, but I'm free to killfile 'em, and make them eat silence. ;-)
I will say this, though-- I have had to restrain myself a number of times from rising to troll-bait myself, but I always ask the question, "Why should I indulge his chidlish behavior?" And then I always hit "cancel."
Actually, I think he's right about one thing-- I should be worshipped as a god for my superiority. ;-)
Sarcasm, it's a great way to deal.
