I'm back, until after my exams. :( I wanted to stay for the weekend because Paul was going to visit tomorrow. it was ok at the hospital, boring, but quiet. Mostly middle-aged depressives, except for a recovering drug addict, a senile old woman, and a girl who was in there for self-harm: "they got a bit worried when I started cutting my neck." There was a pool table and a tv and a kitchen, but that's it. They searched my bags and confiscated my razorblades, etc, and when i went around looking for anything else there that was sharp I noticed there was absolutely nothing, for example, plastic cups instead of glasses, things attatched to notice boards with sellotape instead of pins. I was contemplating smashing a window.
hi...

Don't bother-- it's all safety glass, or some other unsatisfying material. A few of my friends have worked in hospitals like that-- they've already thought of everything that you might try to use to cut yourself with.
Good luck on your exams, anyway. ;-)

Quinn: People are so weird!
Daria: Some are weird. Some are just astonishingly self-centered and deceitful.
Thought it might be. I thought about smashing a cup; that would pass as an accident, although the pieces wouldn't be as sharp. There was a cupboard thing in the "quiet room" or somewhere which had a glass panel, and as it was out of the way and all I figured they probably wouldn't have had the glass replaced in that. But then my mother appeared and announced that I was going home then instead of on Sunday as I'd been told, or on Saturday as my dad had been told. Nice to see the place is well organised (FWIW I also had to move rooms three times).
There was a wire coathanger, but that didn't work very well. I had a paperclip and nail clippers that didn't get found and/or confiscated, but they didn't work much better. When I go back I'll have to make more effort at hiding stuff.
Thank you. :)
How about applying your ingenuity & intelligence to trying to discover happiness? Being sorry for yourself is much too easy, you obviously need a bigger challenge to occupy your mind.

I suspect her situation is far more complex than that. It's easy to tell a someone to "snap out of it" but from what I'm able to discover about these things it isn't so simple. From what Alli has posted I get the impression that she has difficulty deriving pleasure from anything. In such a case how can one hope to experience happiness?
I'm sure a solution exists, all she has to do is find it. It might turn out to be something easy and simple. I think we can all agree that she's worth it and wish her luck.
That's why it's a worthy challenge for her. She needs something difficult to occupy her mind.
Difficulty maybe, but I'm sure there are things Alli enjoys in unguarded moments when she forgets that she's not supposed to allow herself to feel good. It takes a lot of effort be unhappy all the time, sometimes you have to take a break from it and relax a bit. In fact just realising that you actually have to expend energy on being unhappy or depressed or whatever can make a big difference, as it then occurs to you that you could be using that mental effort to some other end, such as improving your guitar playing, or perfecting a method for putting crumbs in your friends' hair without them noticing. It's like, when we're depressed we tend to listen to depressive music, which helps keep us depressed. But if you grit your teeth and put some cheerful music on instead, you tend to find that after a few tracks you actually feel brighter and more positive about things. But people don't do this as they want to stay depressed, perhaps on the basis of "someone ought to feel sorry for me, and as no-one else will do it I'll just have to feel sorry for myself". In Alli's case though there are lots of us here who feel sorry for her, which means she has no need to do it for herself! Instead she should go out and get drunk with her friends or something.

I have happiness sometimes... I've noticed it makes very little difference as to whether I want to harm myself or not. Hmm.
I still think you ought to become a blood donor, after all it's a socially acceptable way of bleeding profusely.
-Shez.
Ugghhh... needles. Noooo...
They made me have a blood test at the hospital. They were testing me for anemia. I've already been tested for anemia!!
Maybe it was meant to be some kind of aversion therapy. It's pretty weird that you can't bear needles yet rusty razor blades are ok. So why did they discharge you so early? Surely they haven't given up on you already? I would expect it to take them the full fortnight before they concluded you were a hopeless case, or maybe even longer given how long people on atd have been on the case without giving up on you.
You know it's a shame you came back so early, as we hadn't got round to talking about you behind your back yet. Well except for Mindy's comments (or was it Dagny? I get people mixed up sometimes.)

LOL, trust you to pack something like that! I thought hospital was a place where you were going to be cured of these tendencies!

LoL, I've been in the NG for oh, 2 weeks, but now I'm very scared :)

True, but didn't the US Surgeon General determine that A.T.D is highly addictive? ;)
Just be sure not to inhale. You'll pass out from lack of oxygen, but you won't get addicted. And use a condom.

Myself, I never leave the farm without my full body condom.
Can't wait until the flavored ones come out. ;)
What you need is to snap out of it...
Sad to say, depression is not just something you can "snap out" of. It is a serious condition, requiring compassion and understanding, and sometimes a few doses of Prozac. Even someone with mild depression, like myself, can go off the deep end sometimes and do some really stupid stuff. I tried to kill myself with my diet pills a couple years ago. Fortunately, I haven't tried it again, mostly due to the fact that my best friend succeeded. He shot himself because we broke up. Nobody knew he was so upset. Not even me. Jess "Morgendorfer"
Daria: Do you believe everything adults tell you? Gupty Kids: Yes Daria: What if 2 adults tell you totally opposite things?
Actually when I said that I was responding to the person who said they were scared of atd.
Yes drugs are cool. There's also a herbal one (St John's Wort) which apparently is just as good and can be bought over the counter in wholefood shops.
That must really suck. I'd hate to have that happen. Not that I imagine it ever could, but then I expect you didn't either.

Seems like an appropriate response... ;)
Now I'd confused - Shez, what should I snap out of? I'd reply to the thread, but stupid outlook's deleted it....
