As a parady of musicals, I found it interesting (the same way I found "Depth Takes a Holiday" an interesting parady of holiday specials).

What's most interesting is how much some of the characters reveal about themselves in some of the songs.

Not a particular favorite of mine, but I still watch it as a fan. It's sort of difficult for shows to work the "musical one-shot" theme, let's hope it works with the upcoming Buffy episode of that nature.

Well, I still stand by "Daria!" as a cool ep. But then again I actually LIKE musicals; i have far more theatre mp3s and cds than any other kind of music. I liked Death Takes a Holiday, too. IMO, any show that has the balls to do an "experimental" episode or two at the very *least* shows potential, if not rare greatness.

It's called "Depth Takes a Holiday", but, yes, I see something in it too. Maybe my own lack of enthusiasm for musicals prejudiced me against "Daria!"

Oh, whoops. Death Takes a Holiday is a MASH ep. I haven't seen either in a long time.

Yeah, i think that was the ep's main drawback, that so many people who didn't like it probably don't like any shows or movies where the characters sing.

I don't like musicals too much either, but I did like this episode, although aside from the brief Speed Racer reference, I couldn't stand "Gah-Gah Dammit."

"Depth Takes a Holiday," wasn't really as bad as most fans think as far as I'm concerned. I didn't mind that it was so far-fetched, and neither does Tracy Grandstaff, believe it or not. Apparently that was her favorite episode. But one thing that can't be ignored is that it did offer some new twists on holiday traditions. There was an episode of "Mighty Max," that put it's own spin on vampire folklore. In addition, I think that might be one of the reasons for the success of the comic book/movie "Men in Black." Usually in UFO folklore a visit by the MiB's is preceived as a threat.

It is. Daria's "this is the best Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's, Saint Patrick's, President's and Guy Fawkes Day ever" line is what confirms it.

It's also a not so subtle poke at MTV's way of airing Daria and other shows. Even if they had done a serious Daria holiday ep, it would ended up originally airing in July or something.

So they just did a holiday episode that covered every holiday.

Oh, and the name of the other episode you like is "Depth Takes a Holiday". And I liked it, too. That's why I was surprised when I learned many fans of Daria didn't like that episode.

That's the best part of the episode IMHO.

Perhaps the idea of placing a fantasy episode in a series grounded in reality didn't sit well with the fans. I thought it was a typical filler episode that didn't really push the character development too much (although seeing Quinn's discomfort at the idea of another baby Morgendorffer was cool). I'll say it again tho- it couldn't have hurt any to make clear that this was a dream sequence.

Why? Is it really necessay? Most people already assume it was. Other have their own theories. We're big boys and girls, we can think up our own explanations (if we want to) without someone else leading us around by the nose.
