I missed a few eps in s1. When was Trent's first appearance? Was it "Road Worrier" or an ep I missed?
Also, I know Jane's mom is always in her studio, unseen or heard like in Peanuts. Where's her dad? Other sibs? From Daria Diaries you see her family is extensive.

I think that Penny, Jane's sister, was out of the country trying to locate work. Although it might be a response to Mom and Dad's situation, so you're probably not far off the mark.

Jane's Mom and Dad tend to do a lot of travelling, which is why they're rarely around. Jane's sister Penny is out of the country looking for a job, her other sister Summer is probably looking for her 4 kids who run away frequently (where's the father?). Jane's other brother Wind is off getting married.
