I'm Curious...

Why is it that I see some posts on here that absolutely have nothing to do with Daria? Would someone please explain this to me? I see rants and raves, sexual garbage, and other things that would be considered illegal elsewhere. Is there any way that these posts could be filtered out? I think it's ridiculous for this to be allowed on this site. Take it somewhere else. Thanks.

This happens in all newsgroups. You can't stop someone from posting to an unmoderated newsgroup. You can skip over posts that don't interest you or use a newsreader that has filters or killfiles.

It happens *everyplace* online, dearie. "Daria"'s on hiatus, MTV doesn't give a shit about it, and thusly we're left to talk about other things.

(see above)

The rants and raves add to the beauty of this place; it would be so boring without them. I've never seen any "sexual garbage" on this newsgroup, aside from the occasional dirty-minded troll and the stream of XXX junk ads that appear on all newsgroups. What things on here could be construed as "illegal"? Short of violating human rights statutes set by the UN, one cannot make conversation illegal.

Only if you have a newsgroup reader with special filters. But then you'd have to set and reset with every off-topic post.

Did you hear that? This is now a *site*!

Um...hon...hate to break it to you but websites are a completely different part of the Internet than newsgroups are.

Or no thanks as the case may be. Just because you don't like off-topic conversation doesn't mean it has to be relegated elsewhere (and where else would you want us to discuss off-topic, might I add? E-mail is way too cumbersome and this is the only newsgroup where the discussions would have some bit of pertinence). You just have to accept this as a regular part of your online experience. Or start a thread of your own.

And hey we musn't forget the descussion of those Daria pictures :)

Umm, it could be illeagal if it was defamitory, racist, or in violation of copyright, for example. As for the defamitory, example, I would sugest that you check out the case of Laurence Godfery vs Demon Internet, basically, Godfery managed to get a court to act in his favor because Demon did not remove a usenet posting he considdered defamitory, so yes conversation on her *CAN* be illeagal.

The best filter is not to read what you are not interested in.

He may be reading the group by Dejanews, or some other similar service, so from his/her pov, it *IS* a site. Actually strictly speaking Usenet (to give newsgroups their propper title :) ), are not really a part of the internet, they where around before the internet existed, they are however carried over the internet, though there are other methods that they can be distributed.

I personally have no problem with off topic discussions, exept when they get beaten to death, in which case I ignore them, or where they start to get personal, and nasty, thankfully we've only had a couple of incidences of this in the time I've been reading the group (about 2 years now).

Just my 2p. (which is abot 3.5c :) if I remeber exchange rates correctly ).

Okay, I apologize about not remembering about things like that. Yes, it could end up being illegal, but only after the fact. The Internet is a censor-free zone, so all sorts of speech can be protected. It's only when the speech ends up crossing the boundaries of one's own personal liberties...ah screw it.... LOL.

That *is* true, as well. And if you're using a newsgroup program like the one packaged with Netscape, you can instantly mark a message as being read without having to read it...deflagging, I think it's called. I did that a lot when the topic of conversation over here turned to gaming discussions. I have no real interest in computer games so if I'd read any of the posts I would've been bored out of my skull.

Well, Deja only acts as a sorta online archive for Usenet, doesn't it? I mean, one *can* post from there, yes, but in reality you're really posting responses to archives. I'm not slamming it...I used to use it...just sorta clarifying it. And...whoops, I didn't know they were around before the Internet existed...and what other methods? I'm still relatively new to the Internet, having only been around since '97, so pardon my ignorance. All this stuff was already here when I got here.

Ummmm...only can think of one thing to say...AMEN.

*giggles* That's what I figured too.

Heheh :)

Yeah any decent newsreader can do that, hell even in TRN (under Unix, that has been around for at least 10 years), you can mark which threads you do and don't want to read.

Actually the above statement I made pretty much sums up my attitude towards censorship in general, the ultimate censor should be the person viewing it, if they don't like it they don't view it. Ok yes I realise you have to do things like protecting minors from seeing stuff that they really should not, but I largely believe that that should be up to the parent's descression, not the govenments. I realise that this is probaly an un- popular view but what the hell :)

Yeah I don't tend to post via deja, but I do tend to use it as an additional information repository, if I can't find the info I need on the web, because chances are someone somewhere might have descussed it on anewsgroup.

No probs. Usenet has been around as far as I can tell since at least the early 80's, possibly longer. Well back in the days when people first started networking computers (we're talking 70's if not earlier), they used to use a thing called uucp (unix to unix copy), which would periodically dial up a remote machine (or machines), and exchange news/mail with them. I have personallay used this method before I was properly net connected. It worked much that same way as an off line reader would over the internet, but needed a direct modem to modem connection to the target computer. Hope that makes sense :)

Heehheeh.

Yeah :)

Usenet used to be distributed via UUCP (Unix to Unix Copy), which I think usually ran over dial up links between computer sites. There's some jargon file entries that discuss some of this stuff, eg. http://www.xerez.demon.co.uk/jargon/U/usenet.html http://www.xerez.demon.co.uk/jargon/U/UUCPNET.html Usenet started in around 1980, whilst the Internet per se only came into existence in 1990, although it's forerunner, ARPANET started in 1969.

In article ,

Although I mostly post to on-topic threads, I like sitting back and looking at some of the OT stuff, many times you'll learn something, as I think many of us have, with the exception of the XXX stuff of course.

During the droughts between new shows, pretty much anything is fair game around here, if you're not interested in something, don't read it, if you are, then go ahead and do so. You'll get used to it after awhile, everyone here has:-)

Anyways, wait about 3 weeks, or 21 days, or 504 hours, <Quinn> Whatever </Quinn>, we're busiest around here when the new eps are airing, you'll see a lot more of what you're looking for then, so put yer feet up and sit a spell til the new eps air. Welcome to the group!

Hey "SGall".. I think I recognize you from the message boards ;)

Newsgroups are generally different from message boards, and have entirely different rules. With newsgroups, anything goes. No censorship, nada. You can talk about your personal life, your beliefs, your worries, your problems, your sexual preference, your one night stands, your brief encounter with an alien, your experience with LSD, etc. Rant, rave, swear, vent, spew, vomit, belch - it's ALL in the ballpark. The only thing that may stop you from vulgar and crude behavior is common decency and a sense of community. There is essentially no such thing as off-topicness in most newsgroups (although some newsgroups encourage symbols like "OT" to indicate that it is an off-topic post).

There are such things as moderated newsgroups where there is someone to oversee the posts. But most newsgroups are unmoderated, and are generally a free-for-all.

If you decide that you don't want to read any off-topic posts though, you can set a killfile or filter on certain posts with your newsreader.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that, but enforcement of on-topicness does vary wildly from one newsgroup to another as it's wholly down to the readers of the newsgroup to both set and enforce the rules. Here on atd people are very laid back re. both netiquette and on-topicness, but on some newsgroups, topicality and netiquette is strictly enforced, and people who post offtopic or in the wrong manner will find themselves flamed unmercifully (for an example of strict rules, try using a smiley on alt.folklore.urban and see how long you survive!), or people may even complain to their ISP and get their account revoked if their postings are considered to be disrupting the newsgroup. Were it not for such sanctions being possible, all newsgroups would long ago have been made unusable by trolls and spammers.
