Isn't it a tad ironic that Mtv airs a show about models instead of Daria, the day "This Year's Model" should have aired.
Weird huh?

I'm telling ya, MTV thinks that the audience for "Daria" consists of nothing but a bunch of Quinns who get all squishy in the loins for the likes of N'Sync and the Backstreet Boys. Never mind that, as you pointed out, the show's main character is decidedly AGAINST such things...

I watched part of that fashion show last night (replay from yesterday afternoon). It was the most vulgar display I've ever seen. The music was incoherent and fashion was appalling (even the fashion club would turn their noses up at this). It looked like they just took some clothes and cut pieces of it out to show more skin. At one point this one girl had on something that you could see completely through. Yes, you could see her breasts in full view. I found the whole thing to be like a traffic accident, it's horrible to look at but somehow you can't turn away.
And this was the crap they show instead of Daria. Ick.

I think the thing is a show like Daria can be interpreted by lots of different people to support lots of different worldviews. Allow me to draw a parallel picture. If you've seen Absolutely Fabulous and like it to any extent, you know the characters. There's Edina, the hyperactive, easily-influenced, insecure, wild-but-no-longer-a-child mother, Patsy, the devil-may-give-a-shit boozing man-hunter, and Saffie, the responsible daughter who spends more time than she would like trying to raise and discipline her mother. Now, everybody I've talked to who likes the show interprets it as supporting their own point of view. People who love partying and drugs think Pats is the hero and that Saffie is an awful bore who is dragging Edina down. Others, (and maybe this is the road Daria would take) say Patsy is the evil one who's leading Edina to Hell in a handbasket, and Saffie is trying to persuade her mum into become a more well-rounded, realistic person. I personally think Saffron and Edina could stand to learn a little bit from each other. Edina needs to get a grip on herself and take some responsibility, while Saffie could stand to loosen up just a tad. You could say about the same thing for "Daria", putting Daria in Saffie's place and Quinn in Edina's (maybe Sandi as Pats?). Sorry for the tangent folks, but I've been cramming all night, and for some reason, the AbFab metaphor works in my head right now, and the Daria one isn't quite there. But this could be why Daria is finding an audience in the ditzy cookie-cutter prototype chickswhen you would think it would only appeal to the complete opposite sort of person. Whew! OK, back to my Spanish notes..."ay, no me gusta".

I've never felt that Ab Fab has any message that it's trying to convey. It's appeal is that it is totally politically incorrect, and turns all that crap about family values and the work ethic on its head, by having characters who smoke, drink, take drugs, are completely incompetent at work and pretty much everything else, and consider ordinary upstanding citizens to be a bunch of shits that they wouldn't give the time of day to. Despite all this, Edina manages to hold down a highly paid executive job and Patsy gets away with swanning around doing nothing at all, whereas in any ordinary drama such characters would receive their comeuppance at some point to drum in that old Brittany message, "don't drink or take drugs."
Actually, Ab Fab is probably an accurate portrayal of how a lot of affluent executives live, getting paid oodles of money for doing fuck all. The only inaccurate thing is that Edina's child lives at home. In the real world, in the UK, rich people send their children off to boarding school so they don't have to deal with them at all.

Yeah, but Edina can't do shit by herself, so Saffy is like a servant. Or a babysitter.

I remember Saffy saying, several times, that she felt like a servant and she was fed up with it. That's one of the reasons she finally did move out. Even when Saffy labeled everything in the kitchen, Edina called her in the middle of class to ask where certain things were. Then after she found what she was looking for Edina couldn't even use a simple can opener. How Edina could use a phone and then drive to the university, but not figure out a simple can opener boggles the mind.

I recall the episode where they go for a holiday in France and can't get it together to buy any food as they don't speak French so they ring the UK and get Saffy & wotsername the secretary (Jane Horrocks) to come out with supplies.
Maybe you're left handed.

Oh yeah, I've seen that one. Is that the same one where they get picked up for drug possession at the airport and it turns out they paid 40 quid a gram for some flour or something? Or maybe I'm thinking of something else......
I was pretty much ambidextrous when I was younger, but I only used my left hand for writing backwards and you don't have to do that very often so now I'm just right-handed. How boring is that.
Alli
That's the one, yes.
It's tragic! Leonardo da Vinci was a left hander who wrote backwards, some people thought he did it to keep his writing secret but I think it's more likely that he just did it as he found it easier. Since normal writing was designed to be written left to right, it makes sense that it would be easier to do it backwards and right to left if you're left handed. There was a girl in the news last year who I think did mirror writing after a bang on the head, then a year later she got another bang on the head and reverted to normal. I don't think anyone's come up with an explanation for it.
Hey, there's a programme on Channel 4 right now (Babylon) about weird rock stuff and they're talking to Courtney Love and also about Kurt Cobain's escapades.
[Too late, it just finished!]

Ah yes. That's the only bit I can remember at the moment.
I used to be really good at it, I could write backwards almost as fast and neat with my left hand as I could normally with my right hand. But I can't do it so well anymore. It was weird, I didn't really have to think about making the letters go the wrong way round, even.
Weird. So, why didn't they just hit her on the head when she first started doing the backward writing thing? Didn't they watch any cartoons when they were kids???
I know, I was just watching it! Who the fuck was that guy who was rolling in his shit? They're right about one thing, his knob was tiny!

Does this mean that the majority of people whose native language is Arabic (written fron right to left) are left-handed?
[email] of Deja News - The Leader in Internet
But of course!
Actually I think it depends on how the words are written, I don't know about Arabic but taking Chinese as an example of a non-Western form of writing, each character is constructed vertically from a number of strokes, which means that the writing direction isn't of great importance, whereas with English and other languages that use the A-Z alphabet, whole words are commonly formed pretty much from one continuous pen-stroke, something which is easier to do if moving the hand one way rather than another. This is also affected partly by the writing implement: fountain pens are better pulled (=right handed) along the paper, not pushed (=left-handed).
-Shez.
well, hebrew is written right to left, and i know alot of people with hebrew as rtheir native alnguage, and most are right handed. the only probl;em i have with writing hebrew is that im right handed, and my hand gets inky. Saerah

Actually, no. IIRC most arabs consider the left hand to be 'bad', using the right hand to eat, write, etc. The left hand is used only to, umm, wipe your privates, so to speak.

Question... I never did get to see "AbFab: The Last Shout". Anyone care to summarize it for me? (I doubt I'll be able to catch it on Comedy Central any time soon, as CC shows AbFab during the day on the weekends and I'm usually out.) I know that part of the plot was that Saffron (now THAT'S a name right out of Edina's '60s past!) was going to get married, but that's all I know.
