I think the real significance of Ted DeWitt-Clinton was that he illustrated the traits Daria values. We often seen the kinds of people who Daria holds in contempt: poseurs and idiots. Daria really WAS "into" this guy, because, I think, "He's honest, ethical and smart..." She was really impressed that he'd never been to school and his parents had taught him at home. She found his depth, breadth of knowledge and accomplishments a challenge, ("I can't keep up.") (It's not a competition, Daria. Just enjoy.) It takes a lot to impress Daria and Ted managed to do it. Anyone who can impress Daria deserves our respect. And for a brief period while she was with him, I think Daria was happy. Anyone who can make our heroine happy deserves our appreciation as well. Ted's alright.

I was the guy who voted for Ted, mostly because I thought he was a funny character, and I thought it was fun to see Daria "corrupt" him. (Although how gum can corrupt anyone is beyond me.)
