SPOILERS FOR "Misery Chick" * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * I was watching "Misery Chick" again, and I noticed that, aside from Daria and Jane, Mack was the only Lawndalian to stand up to Tommy Sherman, even a little. It's obvious from his initial reaction when talking to Kevin that Mack remembered, and hated, Tommy Sherman. And in the scene where Tommy is putting Kevin down, note Mack's expression ... he's *glaring* at Tommy. He also told Tommy directly that what he was saying wasn't funny.

I think Mack's a rather under-rated character, because of the show's focus (on Jodie only as a friend of Daria's, and on Mack only as Jodie's boyfriend). Observing his behavior in that ep, I can easily see why Jodie likes him, and why Andrea may have a crush on him. He's quiet about it, but Mack's definitely the kind of guy who both in fiction and IRL might be a "hero". He's smart, strong-willed, polite, and principled.

At least on the Lawndale Commons board anywho. I want to know more about Mack darnit! He's one of the few effective male characters on the entire show who isn't screwed up or otherwise there for satiric value and I'm really curious to know more. Same deal with Andrea etc? Why haven't we seen Mack's family or anything else about him? What exactly is the story anyway? He's got an at least decent sense of humor (in "Ill" I thought his crack about using his father's barn for an operating room was hilarious even though it went right over Kevin's pointed head) and seems like a special minority of cool guys everyone (if they're lucky) runs into during High School, people who are smart and fun to be around in general. So why so little detail? Man am I curious!

Unfortunately, Andrea doesn't seem to have *any* friends ... though I suspect that Mack and Jodie are sort of her friends.

It would be interesting to see just who would rename their son based on attending a basketball game, but is still nice enough to serve as a role model for a youth who is clearly going to become a good man.

And in my opinion he's also decent, brave, and principled. A good guy all around.

Spoiler space is used to protect those who haven't seen an episode of a show from knowing what happened before they want to. Others, like myself on the BtVS newsgroup sometimes want to know the synopsis ahead before they see the show. In any case, spoiler space is usually the considerate way to go.

Speaking as one of the "British friends" I can confirm that all of series one & two have been shown in the UK (and what's more they're not likely to be shown again, at least not by Channel 5, going by what they said earlier this year).

Nit pick, Misery Chick was actually the last episode of season 1, though I grant you it is the last one C5 showed before it started showing season 3 <GRIN>
