"It's Not Gonna Happen" -- MTV VJ 8/29/98, 7pm

OK folks, when the winning "total request Daria" episodes were shown last night, the VJ said, in regards to the Daria-Trent chemistry and whether or not they're going to get together, "It's NOT gonna happen."

So what will become of the Daria-Trent thing? I see three possibilities:

1.) Trent breaks Daria's heart...probably not on purpose but just by being a heterosexual guy who wants companionship. To wit: Trent starts going out with a girl who is NOT Daria. Maybe Monique will crop up again. Or some new girl.

2.) The flirtations continue all the way through the rest of the series with no resolution. The anti-Trent/Daria crowd will hate it, the Trent Estrogen Brigades will eat it up with a spoon. <-- my choice of most likely.

3.) Trent and Daria will have a major talk. Trent will explain where he stands, that he enjoys Daria's company and loves talking to her, she makes him laugh, etc. etc., but that he just doesn't feel the same way about her that she might feel about him. This will bum Daria out for a while but at least Trent will have done the right thing by laying everything out on the table. Eventually they wind up the best of friends. This outcome parallels my personal experience with the guy who later became my best friend. (aside from my husband, of course!)

OK folks...which outcome do you think is more likely?

Almost certain to happen one day. On a conscious level, Daria will be relieved. But she'll catch herself reacting with her gut and saying and doing some pretty embarassing things.

Such a conversation would really piss Daria off, because she already KNOWS all that. Could be an interesting episode, tho.

        Hmmm ... those are my three choices?  I don't really consider myself a
member of the anti-Trent/Daria crowd,  I'm a pragmatist. Trent and Daria will
never get together because A. Trent is too old for Daria and 2. From a
storytelling stance, it makes for more interesting script for them to never get
together.
        If I were writing the scripts,  I would probably do a combination of
continuation of the status quo, maybe even ratchet up the heat a couple of
notches (in Daria's mind anyway ... Silly little self-deluded girl).  And
eventually, have Trent inadvertently crush Daria,  by dating another girl.  In
the end, he breakup with the other woman and Daria's hopes are once again
renewed.
