I like the way everything keeps going wrong for Daria in Road Worrier - she bangs her head, breaks her glasses, sits on a soggy sandwich, etc., yet in the end she's happy as she gets to spend a few minutes sat by the roadside with Trent.
Yes that's probably the best one. But I also really like Arts & Crass, and Pierce Me, not to mention The Daria Hunter, Quinn the Brain, I Don't, Monster, and Ill. Jeez, there's so many good ones to choose from!
I've only seen the first two so far, but of those TALD wins by a long chalk, if there's more of that standard I'll be more than happy.

Hmmm... I liked all of S1, but I'm going to have to say I liked "The Teachings of Don Jake" best, even though the ending was kludgey.
I don't like that one, probably because I've seen it *way* too many times. My S2 fave is "Gifted," because of all the character development and snotty kids (I hope they're not like that at Lawrence University this summer... three straight weeks of having to LIVE with people like that may kill me.)
I couldn't get past the fact that "Daria!" was a musical, so I'll have to say... hmmmmm... "Daria Dance Party," because I'm having some dance problems right now. My stupid friends are trying to get me to go the the Prom with them, which is pretty ridiculous since I'm only in eighth grade. Like you care...

Season 1: "Pinch Sitter". Really tough to choose between it and "Road
Worrier", but "Pinch Sitter" as so many great lines. "Hitler ate sugar." "Hey
Grandma, it's time for your damn pill." "Tad dropped a spore!" etc. etc. Plus
the Self Esteem song and Daria with her hair in ribbon-festooned pigtails put
this one over the top. Sometimes it's just fun to watch Daria suffer, and be
glad it wasn't me.
Season 2: "Arts & Crass". Since everyone else is gonna choose "Write Where
It Hurts", I just have to be different. Plus, this is in many ways the
quintessential Daria episode, what with Daria and Jane having to put up with
bureaucracy and hypocrisy and what-have-you.

Not for me. "Ill" is the episode for me. It was just really well done, IMHO.
"Daria Dance Party" is also tied in my book, with "Daria!" It's really hard to compare the two; they are both really good for really different reasons.

When are new episodes starting again for season 3? I used to get this info from planet daria, which no longer exists. None of the other sites seem to provide this info either, at least not anywhere one is likely to find it. Sorry to post such an elementary question. Yeah, Daria! was good, but I'd have to go with Through A Lense Darkly followed by a narrow margin by Daria Dance Party - again, TALD shows us a side of Daria we don't often get to see...DDP being just plain fun and helping to develop the other characters quite a bit more - plus bonus points for putting the Fashion Club out in the cold ;)

Good story, but not my favorite. Again, it was the last one of that season as well, WWIH-- it struck a chord or two.
I liked "Daria!" -- yeah, it didn't fit in with the show, but that was part of its charm. But I'll have to say that TALD is my favorite, with DDP a very close second. (Mostly because I've tried contacts myself a few times, but I've already mentioned that on this NG.)
You know, reviewing my list, I seemed to have picked all of the "heavy"-ish eps. Oh well, I guess it's just because I'm just part of the secret underground "Bummer Culture." <g>

Dude. You picked my two favorites from s2! WWIH has to definitely either share the title of "best Daria ep ever" with TALD or take it over completely.
All right! Another person who liked "Daria!". Sure, it was a musical, but it was a purely fantastical escapist ep that is WONDERFUL to watch when you've had a stressful day and all you want to do is lighten up. TALD is incredible as well, without being depressing or anything (I don't think it's depressing at all). And DDP was classic as well. Heck, sometimes I like to unwind to DTAH too....
Oh, and I don't consider myself downbeat at all so your choices were quite fine. Heck, the whole PROGRAM itself isn't downbeat if you have the correct perspective on life (except...TLG was just too painful for me...then again, by no fault of Daria's so that's another story).

Alright then. My favorites are :
Season 1: "Road Warrior"- Yes, how could you not love that episode. It was a classic .Here really begins the relationship between Daria and Trent as a friendship. Basically, this is really the first time that Daria and Trent actually talk and have a conversation. Besides that, Daria begins to relax more around Trent (but obviously not completely). So in summary for all us really serious Daria and Trent relationshippers it's a start !!!!
Season 2: "Pierce Me"- My decision in this one was a hard one with all the good episodes in this season. "Quinn the Brain" was a close second in my opinion but nothing at all compared to "Pierce Me"(come on you saw that coming). In this episode we see more or an evolution between Daria and Trent's relationship. She's relaxed more around him but is still not completely relaxed. This is my favorite episode overall anyway because Daria does something VERY out of character- she does something stupid for a guy! This adds a new dimension to DARIA we rarely get to see. It also shows that she has vunerable(or however the word is spelled) spots just like everyone else and is still human.
Season 3: "Daria!" and "Through A Lens Darkly- Yes, I couldn't choose between two episodes in the third season, AND IT'S ONLY BEGINNING!!! I really liked the episode "Daria!" , i suppose because of the fact that it was so out of character for the whole Daria cast. The songs were also very unforgettable. To tell the truth I LOVED DARIA'S VOICE!!! Since you dragged it out of me, my favorite song was "Worried". I also liked that Trent gave Daria a hug (Awww....) and it showed the love that all the families shared ( for example, how Trent was worried about Jane being alright and how even Quinn was worried about Daria when she said "So, you've found me sis at last".She actually calls Daria her sister! ).Now, I liked "Through A Lens Darkly". It was also one with a very out of character plot. Daria acting "narsissistic"(in definition towards Daria, meaning caring about her works at all), taking her mom's advice (although it was after she discussed it with her aunt), an appearance by Aunt Amy and Brittany giving good advice. Wow, it blew the mind. Not to mention the comment Trent made ( "Hey Daria, looks good", or something close to that). All i could say was wow. Wow look at that. on simple question taking up all that room. For shame. Tsk...tsk.

That's my favourite song too, it also works well visually, with the spotlight thing, and especially the bit where Brittany keeps throwing her arms wide, making Daria cringe. That bit was superbly handled, with the twist of the third time round being a false alarm, to Daria's relief.
This seems an opportune moment to announce a major new addition to my Daria webpages, nothing less than the full text of "Daria!" in an easy-on-the-eye tabulated layout in pastel shades, illustrated with 20 pictures from the episode. My thanks to Martin for permission to make use of the original script at Outpost Daria. What inspired me to play around with the script was realising that having seen the episode, re-reading the script is enough to bring the song back to life, and to facilitate this I've reformatted the lines into verse. Reading the script also brought to light things I'd not noticed despite having already watched the episode more than once, notably that the football team is singing a different set of lines whilst Brittany is serenading Kevin. (Going through the script has also enabled me to confirm that the "only" cut Channel 5 made to the episode was the omission of the whole of the "Gah, Gah, Dammit!" song.)
