happy birthday to me (actually this message is about Andrea)

HEY everyone, It's my brthday (again) Thought i'd say happy birthday to myself coz i wanted to. I think Anrea (if that's how you spell it) is cool. i mean she dosn't seem to care about what everyone else thinks (seem). i mean, she has to be like one of the, what, three un self abzorbed people in the whole school, no wait, four (i forgot Jodie). later, Anne. Andrea impresses me as rather cool too. It's just too bad that she's never given any real dialogue or characterized beyond being "that Goth chick in the background", because I suspect (from the "Gothic Nights" part of *The Daria Database*) that she's a rather interesting person. Then again, she's an introvert in some ways like Daria; I might say even more introverted (since Daria has at least one friend in the school), but our knowledge is limited by the fact that we are seeing everything from Daria's viewpoint ... for all we know, Andrea has friends who are never seen in the show.

Maybe Andrea'll get more exposure in some future episode. She seems the sort of person who'd enjoy hanging out with Daria and Jane; on the other hand those two probably seem rather intimidating (to anyone intelligent, and Andrea is definitely that) from the outside. How willing would you be to approach two girls whose primary source of amusement appears to be cracking sarcastic jokes about everyone around them and try to start a conversation? Especially if you were even more of a misfit than they were ...

Jodie's not really "self" absorbed, she's totally caught up in trying to live up to her parents' expectations. If she ever really found her "self", she might shock a lot of people ... not that she's really a bad person, but rather that it's probably been a long time since she let the mask drop, even in her own mind. There are all sorts of hints that the strain is telling, though.

I just had to say that I was thinking about writing a fanfic (oh god no. I'm kidding, some of them can be really good) about Andrea's life and how she comes to, at one point, actually interact with Daria and Jane. After reading your post, I suddenly want to write it even more. hmmmm....... *brain juices start flowing*

Y'know, this got me thinking, and it occured to me that "Gothic Nights" actually gives us a lot of information about Andrea (though not enough to totally reconstruct her character).

• She's smart, imaginative, and a skilled artist.

• She's into high fantasy.

• She finds Kevin, Brittany, and Upchuck annoying.

• She has some kind of love / hate feeling towards Mack.

• She probably had a brother.

• Her mother ... doesn't understand her very well (read the strip).

Actually, she'd probably get along quite well with Daria and Jane, if she ever opened up to them. But for dramatic reasons (the aforementioned "three's a crowd, not `outcasts' anymore") I don't see this happening.

Ooh ... one additional point. It's very likely that her parents are divorced, that her mom has custody of her and her father of her brother, and that she dislikes both of her parents somewhat but her father far more than her mother.
