A mini marathon on 10/28!!!

Did anyone else know this was on today? Were there anymore before "Too Cute"?

They also seems to take their fans for granted, if their constant pre-empting is any indication. Twice this week they've pre-empted the 3:00pm showing for some lame-ass thing or another (first for some stupid Backstreet Boys bullshit, then today for some "musical people play basketball" crap), they seem to have completely abandoned the weekend showings, the 10:30pm episode for this upcoming Monday is pre-empted for some "Real Boring World" junk, and I know they're axing the 3:00pm show again one day next week for more juvenile banality.

I swear, I'm almost convinced that "Daria" would be better off at a network where it would be appreciated. Trouble is, I can't think of one (not even Nickelodeon, which I don't trust after the way they screwed with "Ren & Stimpy").

The WB seems to be raking in the Teen Female Angst market with "Felicity" and "Dawson's Creek", and they have an overwhelming hit with a Strong Female Character in "Buffy The Vampire Slayer."

How about "Daria" as a lead-in to "Buffy?"

Or as a lead-in to "Felicity", particularly if they progress the storyline along to where Daria and Jane are HS seniors, then College-bound?

I bet the We-Be Network is just ACHING for an adult crossover cartoon series as they look at the success of "King Of The Hill" and "The Simpsons" and note that "Dilbert" is coming down the pike from the (alas, moribund) UPN and "Futurama" is waiting in the wings at Fox. They BLEW IT with "Invasion: America" and don't have anything in the pipeline along those lines. "Batman/Superman" and "Pinky, Elmyra and The Brain" are WAY too juvenile for adult crossover.

OK then. Here's "Daria", a hit in spite of MTV's not-so-benign neglect, with 39 episodes either finished or in the production queue. 26 more episodes and you have a syndication-friendly number of episodes. Give it some promotional OOMPH, and you'd have another hit for the WB.

Besides, Warner Bros. TV Animation is less of a cheap-ass outfit than MTV. Bring Eichler and Lewis-Lynn out to Sherman Oaks, CA with their most talented artists from the MTV pool, set them up with a larger pool of talented artists who are probably itching to do something for someone other than Steven Spielberg, and you have the makings for two more classic seasons of "Daria".

Listen Pandora, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Sure, there are some minor scheduling problems with Daria on MTV but at least we HAVE Daria. Just imagine what some other networks might do to try to "improve" Daria and her demographics:

"Let's make her a cheerleader."

"Why not have her going steady with the football team quarterback?"

"We really should change her hair to blond. Maybe some pigtails. And we could have her always wrapping her hair around a finger or something. The kids'll love that."

"We really need someone else to do the voice. No high-schooler would have such a resonant, sexy voice. We need something high-pitched and squeaky."

"Nobody reads anymore, let's drop the intellectual crap."

The dumb persons would be the ones running the networks. If some other network were to take over Daria, there's a possibility that the network executives might decide to "fix" it.

I remember the story about NBC when they decided to air the original series of Star Trek. The executives liked the show, but said they should get rid of the guy with the pointed ears.

We should be thankful that the MTV executives are easy-going enough, or they consider their viewers easy-going enough, to allow Daria to be aired. Most networks would never consider Daria. At all! Or would require changes, some of which I was speculating about. Moving Daria to another network might allow clueless excutives the chance to make changes to the show that we might consider unacceptable. It's too great a chance to take just because of some scheduling problems.

The "teen angst" seems to be which 17 year old with the body of a 26 year old to fall in love with.

I know I'm not the perfect example of a high school student, but that isn't even close to what my life is like. Daria isn't totally realistic either, but they are on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Maybe if they gave Daria it's own night and built around it. But with their current lineup, it wouldn't work.

(Although for some reason I keep watching "Unhappily Ever After", though the writing stinks. There's just something about their characters....)

Actually, I think that the people who run Nickelodeon also run MTV. Ever notice how sometimes they run the same program commercials? (think back to that damn Rat Pack special on Nick at Night) ANd for some reason I think they also run VH1, can't remember the reason why though.

They are all owned by Viacom...Which also owns Paramount Pictures...Which owns Star Trek, the New York Knicks and Rangers (Unless they were spun off recently), MSG, on top of MTV, VH1, a bunch of other cable channels and a lot of other things...There are something like 5 companies that make 90% of entertainment content...

The problem is, they don't have enough shows still in production to make either network very interesting. So they generate mini-surges of excitement with a random Doug marathon or a short-lived Inspector Gadget revival. Nickelodeon never will show Daria anyway because it's PG.

I'd suggest Cartoon Network, but they can't/won't show anything beyond TV-G.

And don't anyone suggest Comedy Central... not after what they did to MST 3K. (Let's just say that during the show's several year contract with them, a good time was not had by all, and MTV treats Daria better than CC treated MST.)
