I bought Vice City a few days ago. There's nothing Daria-related in this post, I just thought I'd mention that I got Vice City. :-)

P.S.: Actually (to even things out on the Daria level), I'm tempted to make a Daria skin for one of the female civilians (Or even one of the hookers). The tools are already out there, it just takes a warped mind to use 'em. ;-)

I still think a Daria-oriented paintball total conversion of the original UT would kick ass. In UT, "mutations," which are basically total conversions, can be switched in and out at will.
Call it "Daria, Hunter." Paintball Jungle would be a great introductory level, but various parts of Lawndale would be great. And yeah, I know it would be incredibly controversial, but several maps could be made from Lawndale High. If anyone has played the third-party CTF map "Football" you already have a football stadium ready to go. Just need a breakaway goalpost that can detach and fsck you up at the least provocation.
The original UT isn't open source yet. However, because of the configurability of the engine, there have been tons and tons of maps and conversions available. I doubt that Epic Games will ever open source their engine like id Software has done for Doom (I, II), Quake, and Quake II. It would piss off too many paying customers who paid dearly to license the engine. But that doesn't matter.
It is likely that a similar conversion job could be done to UT2003. But it's a program that won't run on a lot of less-than-brand-new systems. UT(1999) is fun and will run well on anything from a Celeron with a Rage128 card to an Athlon XP with a GeForce Ti4200. The latter is what I run at home and you can see just how much eye candy that the original recipe UT had buried in it. Some third-party maps are exquisitely beautiful...so much so, that if you just stand there and admire them you are guaranteed dead meat. That's happened to me more times than I want to admit. ^_^
(Hey, why not? I'm already playing *Priss* Nukem... ^^;;; )

Eventually, someone will make the tools to hack GTA: Vice City, allowing one to change the buildings, road layouts, and even trees. Totally paving the way for a virtual Lawndale.
Last night I mentioned making skins, now I'm considering making a Trent skin for the lead character, since I think he'd be best to do the Ray Liotta lip-synching. ;-)
Mutators yes, they are pretty cool, *MUCH* more flexible than the mod systems in the Quake series (and it's decendents).
But I'm the QB ! I may have played it, seem to rember it having the advanced sock rifle and a couple of redeemers may be wrong tho....
Again from this respect it is a MUCH better designed engine, propper object oriented hierarchical entities inheritance etc yeah I know I'm a sad spod.
I alas agree with you however there are a team of ppl who have been given access to the source so that they can fix security vulns in the server, and put in anti-cheating stuff, so you never know. Besides I suppose Id also licensed their engines Wolf, DooM, Quake[1,2,3] for large amounts origionally. And also 3D Realms/Apogee finallay relented over the RotT & Duke Nukem source, that is once they FOUND the RotT source again !
Used to run it on a K6-2 with a Voodoo 2 and get a reasonable frame rate, Agree with you about 2003, though someone has just released a software driver for it. Hehehe if the did open source it wonder if I could do an SGI port :)
Yeah if I want to explore those maps I just open em up in multiplayer with no bots :) Or alternatly using the OldSkool mod that allows you to play origional Unreal in UT. If you like single player you should check out "operation NaPali".
