I definitely feel like Quinn is more like a character with a chance to legitimately surprise me. Jane, too, seems more human than Daria. (Not sure where Helen fits in here.)

I love the show, and I have tons of the episodes on tape, and I bought someone IICY as a gift, but I still think the show got stuck in a corner after establishing Daria as a cartoon character with that voice and those clothes. Suddenly, she's not allowed to put in contact lenses, wear makeup or more attractive clothes, get into exercise or do anything that might raise her energy level.

OTOH, Jane and Quinn, being smaller characters are free to try a lot of things that Daria wouldn't. And Wendy Hooper manages to bring them to life, even while keeping in character with their voices.

I'll vote for Quinn as "the one most likely to stay interesting and surprising if the show had continued."

You'll excuse me for disagreeing, but I've known people like that. That behavior is no more cartoonish of Daria, than any other archetypal or stereotypical behaviour is cartoonish of anyone else, real or fictional.

Stereotypes exist for a reason, namely that they are a useful way to simplify interaction with and classification of entities without needing to invest a lot of time and/or effort into developing a deep understanding of a particular entity.

I, personally, would classify Daria as more of a stereotypical character than an archetypal one, but for most intents and purposes, there is little difference.
