Mike's Delayed Reaction Review- "Arts N' Crass"

MDRR 2-14(bear with me, this is where my own numbering system goes haywire)

That Idea Is Craptastic!- Sometimes inspiration comes from the most unlikely sources. When Daria and Jane's brainstorming for the contest began, most of the ideas they came up with just plain stunk. Fly paper, the skin of a student- what were they thinking? It took a feeling of imminent puking to bring out the real idea. People can be so weird.

Parental Plus Points- Both Jake and Helen came through for Daria in this episode. Jake stood up to Helen for her with his seemingly poor placed example using penne pasta(What job was he fired from, anyway? All he ever seemed to do was read the paper.). Helen came through with her direct and quick deduction and explanation of what would happen if Daria was punished for destroying her poster.

Rehearsed Responses- Helen is the type to have everything planned out in advance, she's mechanical and rehearsed in a lot of her actions. This comes out in the first time she is called from Lawndale. For Quinn, she says to tell them the assignment will be in on Monday. For Daria, she wants to know whom she insulted and what she said. It wasn't as much what Helen said but how she said it.

Outside the System- If you can't get through an obstacle, remember that you can always go around it. Daria and Jane exhausted every official means they possibly could and still had no control over their own creation. The only recourse that they had was to mangle the painting so it couldn't be used. The only real surprise about it was that is was Jane's idea.

This episode gave us a somewhat standard "us against them" storyline but was done in a somewhat new situation. Miss Li couldn't be blamed for wanting to change the poster but her actions leave much to be desired. I liked this episode and it earns an

Why would you be surprised? Jane ain't Kevin, you know. :-) She's got a pretty vicious mean streak in her, or have you forgotten her yenta act so quickly? :-)

I thought this was a good episode, though I notice the plot was kind of similar to an episode of Bailey Kipper's POV. Maybe I already said that in some other posting? I can't remember now. In the Bailey Kipper POV version, Robin Kipper has made a protest painting, saying much the same as Jane initially says, ie. "Art should not be a competition", But whereas Jane enlists Daria to come up with a theme, Robin uses the anti-competition theme, submitting a canvas which is blank apart from the above slogan. But in both series it's the words they put on the canvas that cause the uproar, though in Robin's case it's her dad and not her school principal who is determined to submit a good painting on her behalf, without her consent. I think Robin is like Daria in some ways, being portrayed as a Joan of Arc figure, deep thinker and general protester and thorn in the side of the establishment. She tends to act relatively benevolently towards her younger siblings though, unlike Daria (or Alli!) and she doesn't dress unfashionably or go around saying that life sucks. But then Robin's a bit younger than Daria and maybe needs another couple of years to get fully disillusioned with life. I wonder how much of Daria's bitterness can be attributed to her impossibly popular younger sister? Maybe if Quinn had been drowned at birth Daria would be a happier person.

It's the nature of siblings to constantly go to war with each other. Give Daria and Quinn another five years or so, and you'll see them change their spots. It's amazing what 5-10 years of maturing can do to a person...

I thought this episode DID highlight pretty well the differences in the way Jane and Daria think. Now here, Daria uses words to bring meaning to Jane's picture. Jane took a while (she said so herself) to really get Daria's point. She's a right-brainer...she's great with art and creativity but she has little use for words and ESPECIALLY numbers. Daria's practically the opposite, she's a creative writer, but even her FANTASIES are grounded in reality (i.e. "College Bored")."Arts 'n' Crass" showcases just how well Daria and jane compliment each other as partners in crime.

This was absolutely great. "The system has failed us." And Trent really seemed to enjoy the "covert" operations... It's almost like he'd done these kinds of things before...
