I don't really post a lot of stuff in hear, but I read quite a bit. Anyway, I was just curious what kind of ideas you guys had for new Daria episodes for future seasons. I'm not asking for fanfics...I just want to know where you think Daria still has room to go in the future. They've already done so much... family camping trip school fundraising fair alternapalooza Jake's heart attack Daria in the hospital bridesmaid jail Jane will be having a boyfriend soon... etc. etc. etc. What else is there for Daria to do? Think about it.

Hmmm, how about Daria becoming the 5th member of Mystic Spiral (We don't really know if she can sing, but then, we didn't think Daria would dress like Quinn, so anything can happen.)

Daria could go to wherever Jake works on career day.

Quinn could decide to take the role of Fashion Club president.

The list goes on and on.

Nah...Daria wouldn't sing. She could play her flute! I know she hates it, but if Trent asked her really nicely.... or she could just be a lyricist.

  • Daria and Quinn in a cult.

I could see number 6 happening. Perhaps Val, as in "Val," moves into the television division and has her minions create a series based on her ultimately disturbing visit to Lawndale.

The following is a Season Three SPOILER for "Just Add Water." If you have not seen this episode yet, proceed at your own risk.

Okay -- that should suffice.

After watching "Just Add Water," I think it's time that Glenn & Susie & crew did an entire season of shows that revolve around Helen and Jake separating. It doesn't have to end in divorce, but I think their marriage is at a definite breaking point. (BTW, are their any single-parent households in Lawndale?)

And, I am disappointed in JAW. There was a promising plotline about Mr. DeMartino's gambling problem, but then it just deteriorated into a bunch of silly power plays between: 1) Helen & Jake; 2) Helen & Ms. Li; and 3) Quinn & Sandi. Those 3 situations are becoming tiresome & I'd like to see an all-out confrontation in each of these conflicts. (They all have to come to a head sooner or later.)

Also, this episode was along the same lines as "Fair Enough," where Ms. Li orders mandatory participation in a fund-raiser. It also had echoes of "The Daria Hunter," where all the teachers (except Ms DeFoe, for some reason) were required to participate. These 2 episodes only prove that you cannot have mandatory fun. I certainly didn't enjoy those two episodes, and before tonight they were my least favorite. After tonight, however, there's no doubt: JAW is my least favorite of the 38 epsodes aired thus far. This one will NOT be rewound anytime soon, and it will be the only other episode (along with "The New Kid") that I will NOT have a backup copy of. On a scale of 1 to 10, this gets a .5.

And while I was glad Ms. Barch threw that tramp DeeDee overboard, there was that Titanic thing - - aaaaagh!!!! No mas! NO MAS!!!!

One final note: for those who may have read my first version of this message before I had a chance to delete it, I apologize for not including the spoiler. I'm still new to this NG, and I don't normally post comments about an episode on Wednesday night, I usually wait until the weekend after I've seen it few times. But I was so IRKED about JAW, I felt I had to get this off my chest now. I mean, I was so pissed, I didn't even care that they talked over the closing credits (AGAIN!!! THOSE __IDIOTS__!) -- and I LIKE "The Gambler!" How DARE they talk over Kenny Rogers! No chicken for THEM!!!

This is my first post to Alt.tv.daria! Wahoo! Okie doke, just some spoiler space for "Just Add Water"..

SPOILER

It's really unfortunate that my break from lurkdom is a post on how disappointed I was with this episode. In the seasons that I have been graced with Daria's presence, there has not been an episode that didn't get a guffaw, snicker, or chortle out of me. Tonight was the first time that I honestly hated an episode. When I first saw the preview, I thought it might be some pseudo-"Titanic" spoof. The idea of a cruise ship intrigued me and piqued my interest. But oh, what a horrible mess the episode turned out to be. In the beginning it was really slow, the beginning without its usual wit. The scene with Quinn and Marco was only slightly interesting, but it had a taste of "It's been done", like the scene in the bathroom with Sandi baiting Quinn YET AGAIN....the scenes between Helen and Jake had none of the usual amusing barbs, and just seemed tired. The fact that Daria and Jane slept through the whole episode was extremely disappointing. The show's name is "DARIA" not "The Jake/Helen/Quinn/Sandi/& co Spin-Off Showcase" The scene with Deedee and Mr. O'Neil on the bow was hilarious, but then Ms. Barch asking Mr. O'Neill to REPEAT the same action was boring and unamusing. Not even Kevin and Brittney's stupidity could save this episode. All in all, I felt this episode offended my intelligence. Sorry for the long rant ;-)

Such a pity it had to be that bad, though. Maybe they'll redeem themselves with the new ep for next week. I know that I will still watch the reairing of this ep, though. Just to get my own opinion of the whole deal.

After watching "Just Add Water," I'm ready to see Helen and Jake separate -- not necessarily divorce, but I think you could build an entire season of episodes around their trial separation.

And, I am disappointed in JAW. They had a good plotline going with DeMartino's gambling addiction -- but then it just deteriorated into a bunch of power plays: between Helen & Jake, Helen & Ms. Li, Quinn & Sandi, and even Janet & DeeDee (I AM glad she threw her overboard, but that Titanic thing -- aaaaagh!!!! This has been my least favorite episode overall -- worse than the disjointed "Fair Enough." I doubt I'll be rewinding this episode.

1. They could initially like each other, but soon become sick of each other's company because they can't stand the attitude.

2. Daria suddenly gets an inkling as to how other people see her because she's seeing the same thing in the new person. This might snap her into a completely "normal" attitude, and then she might slip back or people might even _ask_ her to go back to her normal ways.

Sorry, I forget that I'm not in alt.games.doom at times.:) This probably went over several heads because not everyone here is a gamer (my fault). Heretic and Hexen are games based on the Doom engine, both in the sword-and-sorcery vein instead of the technobase-and-hell style of Doom. Heretic has a magical artifact (the Morph Ovum) that can turn monsters into easy-to-kill chickens. Hexen (made by the same company) has an artifact called the "Porkalator" that turns monsters into easy-to-kill pigs. The Mace of Contrition is one of the weapons in Hexen, just a simple spiked-ball at the end of a wooden handle. Highly entertaining when used to club small animals, if you're in to that kind of thing.:)

Violator's Toad of Deja.com - Share what

Stop me if you've heard these before...

"Revenge" - Quinn humiliates Daria by taking her bra to school and waving it about in class. Daria decides it's time to return to being an only child and plots to murder her with Jane's somewhat reluctant help.

"School Picture" - A year on from when her parents complained about her dowdy school pictures in a "The Misery Chick", Daria decides that this year she will wear something outrageous. Quinn overhears her scheming about outfits with Jane and tell Helen who forbids Daria to wear anything bizarre. Helen is shocked to realise this edict contained a loophole when she gets a phone call from Miss Li telling her there's a rumour going round school that Daria intends to have her school picture taken in the nude!

"No TV" - Having learned none of the lessons from "The Big House", Helen decides all this watching of junk TV like "Sick Sad World" is preventing them from spending quality time together, and bans all TV watching by having their cable connection cut. Desperate to see SSW, Daria tried to get round it by rigging up a makeshift satellite feed.

"CNN" - Daria discovers that before she was a lawyer, Helen was part of a successful student dance troupe. One of Helen's old troupe members is raking it in as a dancer, and when she comes to town Helen discovers that she's using *her* old routines! Will Helen litigate? Or will she be inspired to return to dancing herself? Daria tries to stop the family's breadwinner from foolishly cashing in her career...

Well that's all for now...

I think there are some people who just won't look good in formal dresses, especially of certain styles. The tailor may not have had much incentive to make it fit with Daria because it was clear Daria did not particularly care about the dress or fashion or any of the things her work revolved around. What is more, Daria's low pain tolerance and Jane's wisecracks would give the tailor more reason to feel antagonized.

Bob Ohler said:

Actually, the reason I said that the law is only enforced "maliciously" is that it is virtually impossible to secure a conviction unless the young "victim" testifies (which she usually will only if there's already been a quarrel or if it was a set-up from the beginning).

This was demonstrated a few years back when a (male) New York City schoolteacher took his 15 year-old student on a cross-country trip, without the permission of her family (said family having previously connived at her GENUINE rape by an uncle). The panicked law enforcement agencies swung into gear, and it was noised about that he would probably murder her and leave her in a shallow grave. Mass hysteria.

The law finally caught up with them after he'd horribly abused her by taking her to one of the Disney parks, the Grand Canyon, and several other places. They may have been lovers at that point; one would imagine so but we'll never know for sure.

The reason? The girl, being no fool, absolutely refused to cooperate with her rotten family and betray her lover. Instead, she maintained that she'd lied to the teacher and said that her family was ok with the trip; she further maintained that he had not so much as kissed her improperly.

The stymied law enforcement agencies briefly attempted a perse ... I mean PROSECUTION of the teacher, but backed down in light of the fact that they wouldn't have been able to find a jury in the land willing to convict the teacher of anything other than excessive niceness. Last I heard the girl was living with the teacher (having reached age of consent in the meantime, and probably blackmailed her family with the threat to prosecute the UNCLE), and they were considering marriage.

I do not know what happened after that.

Sincerely Yours, Jordan

"Man is a god in ruins" (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

Taking people to a Disney park certainly qualifies as child abuse, they should have thrown the book at him!

I general teachers who date pupils can expect the sack, which is not really surprising, as they're supposed to be there to educate their students, not get off with them. Children often get crushes on teachers and teachers are expected not to take advantage of the position of trust they're in. Certainly in the UK teachers are sacked for this sort of thing.

The government even want to bring in a law making it illegal for teachers to have sex with a student even if the student is over the age of consent. I think this is going way too far, it's one thing for a teacher to lose their job over an illicit romance, it's quite another to send them to jail for having sex with someone who is legally a consenting adult. It's notable that no parallel law is being proposed to protect teenagers in the workplace from predatory managers, yet this is almost certainly a much more serious problem, as there will often be an element of coercion involved, ie. "have sex with me or I'll sack you / block your promotion / give you all the shit jobs to do".

I disagree! The only one of the Disney parks I've been to (several times), Walt Disney World in Florida, is a very pleasant place and I had a wonderful time, even the time it rained (Though the time they had forest fires in central Florida it wasn't as nice with all the smoke. It varies from state to state in the US but men can be convicted of statutory rape for having sex with girls below a certain age, girls below that age can be considered "jailbait". The age of consent varies between 16 and 18 years of age and convictions can also vary based on whether there was a significant age difference.

I suppose there's the jailbait issue but I'm not intending to rape or molest anyone, especially people whom I never expect to actually meet, just express my heartfelt admiration to those I perceive as having a truly interesting female mind. A little avuncular encouragement. Is it wrong to tell a lady you have absolutely no interest in that you admire and respect her? Should she go get a court order or warmly bask in the realization that a total stranger finds her interesting? The interesting thing about meeting people in a forum like this one is that the attraction would be absolutely platonic and completely cerebral. I could simply satisfy Diane's curiosity privately--or tell her to mind her own business. Or hope that someone else in the group will help me out and chime in at just the right moment and not fade into the background. Any suggestions? Not from you Diane! I already know what your suggestion will be. <G>

Maybe not on purpose but I don't think she was really trying. Daria's shape isn't so extraordinary that any reasonably competent fitter shouldn't have been able to make the dress at least look like it fitted. I suspect that because Daria and Quinn were last-minute additions to the bridesmaids list there might have been some compromises made in the dresses.

As we saw in ThrALnsDrkly she is not immune to feelings about how she looks. A lot of girls are self conscious about the size of their boobs, either too small or too big. If Quinn went to school waving a rather small size bra around, I can imagine Daria feeling humiliated.

In the English-speaking world bra wearing is the norm, unlike on mainland Europe where it seems to me most girls don't bother with them. (In fact when we were in Germany once we tried asking someone about the fact that none of the girls had bras on, but we were unable to make ourselves understood - people didn't even seem to know what a bra was! Our dictionary suggested "bustenhalter" but when we said it, Germans would just fall about laughing.)

But certainly in inhibited old Britain it's rare to find girls not wearing bras even if they don't need them. People are afraid the sight of nipples through thin blouses might frighten the horses don't you know old chap. And I believe this puritanism was also successfully exported to America on the Mayflower.

It's true though that a lot of independently minded girls like Daria tend to rebel against this and not wear bras if they don't physically need them - one of the fringe benefits of feminism and bra burning perhaps. I used to have a feminist girlfriend who never wore a bra unless she was going into hostile territory such as an engineering workshop, where being braless would almost certainly lead to getting sexually harassed.

I beg to differ. Even though many of the women folk here wear bras, I've noticed many who don't. Some people *like* showing off their nipples. Of course, this is mostly limited to the younger population (Not all of the older women folk have bodies built like Tina Turner's), but you get my drift.

It's strange though, because I don't believe that girls who don't wear bras are necessarily hardcore feminists. Maybe they just, well, don't like wearing them. Bras can be uncomfortable to many people, and I guess if one chooses not to wear them, that's fine by me. I just wear 'em to feel "secure".

I'm somewhat young-ish and I still can't walk around without wearing a bra. Haven't been able to since I was 13. For one thing, I think showing off nipples is disgusting and rather slut-like (like, here, see my boobs!). And another, thosee things can move about with reckless abandon if left uncontrolled...heck, I definitely don't want that...in fact, I make sure they're as tightly controlled as possible. Then again someone could mention something about my Puritanical nature and I'd have to roll myself up into a ball, knowing they're right....

Yeah. And the same logic can follow that "not all hardcore feminists go without wearing bras". I'm a hardcore feminist myself and I cannot live without bras. The whole "corset" idea is uncomfortable to me, and that's why I never would wear one, but bras are a different matter. Even wear them during bedtime, while I'm asleep.

Well, yeah. But as one of my friends' sergeants explained, in jungles and deserts, underwear presents a unique set of problems for the average grunt. Anything with an elastic band around your body (like the elastic in underwear-- or even the elastic in some socks), pinches the skin and allows blood to pool under the skin to some degree. This presents an ideal place for certain blood-consuming critters to attack. When they do, it can be rather painful. To drive his point home, the DI gave them the option of trading underwear with each other or going without. They all chose to go without-- it's easier to learn to cope in training than to suddenly have to switch gears in the field. And the last thing you want to have to deal with in the field are nasty little critters trying to make a lunch of your unmentionables.

Comfort is a slippery slope-- what's comfortable for me may not be comfortable for you. That said, I hate tight clothes with one exception-- let's just say that support can be a beautiful thing, especially when you're involved in martial arts training-- Bad Things can happen without adequate support. (And those compression pants are great under a gi-- they keep your hamstrings warm, too. Ah... nice.)

Well, although, according to Bart Simpson, going underpants-less allows for a certain feeling of freedom, the staggering possibilites of zipper mishaps will keep me a happy underwear custom for years to come.

Actually, I have what I feel is a good reason...I should be wearing size 36 pants, since those are the most comfortable, but since I'm currently stocked with only 34s that would force me to go SHOPPING FOR NEW PANTS. And to PAY FOR NEW PANTS. And personally, I'd rather deal with the brief uncomfortable feeling that comes with putting them on and waiting for them to stretch, than shell out the obscene amounts of money it takes for new ones. And if,somehow, any girls find me attractive as a result, hey, that's just a bonus.

It's like saying "brassire" to an English speaker. "Bstenhalter" is usually abbreviated BH (pronounce "Beh Hah", the "a" is pronounced like in "party"). BTW, is it so hard to use the windows charmap program to insert the proper umlaut? I have to do it too, 'cause I have a Norwegian keyboard. And of course I do it for French (see bra above), too. And if you don't want to, at least for German there is always the possibility of transcribing u-umlaut as "ue". Especially the ignorance of most English native speakers (there are some authors that do care about it, though) towards accents in words imported from French is a mystery to me since they still seem to be part of the "official" (I know there isn't any) spelling. At least when I look into my all-English Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary for the word "resume" (that is summary), I find the correct spelling "rsum". In this case the accents are very useful for distinguishing between "resume" (begin again) and "rsum" (summary). MSB

I don't have a German dictionary here so I didn't know I'd misspelt it. There's a problem with accented characters in usenet though that some older news servers eat them. With my previous service provider this would have resulted in the word being displayed "bstenhalter". In normal writing I'm careful to use accents where I know the word has them, but on usenet I tend not to as I don't know for sure how they will appear on other peoples newsreaders.

When it comes to everyday (non-net) usage, there is still a problem as Windows and DOS are dreadful for accented characters. "Upgrading" my computer to a 200MHz Windows PC from my old 4MHz Z80-based Amstrad word processor was actually a major step downwards in terms of being able to use the correct characters in my writing. My old Amstrad had all foreign accents and letters to hand either directly on the keyboard, or using intuitive or mnemonic keystrokes, but Windows is so bad that the easiest thing to do is to keep a printed table handy of the four-digit ALT codes, so for an e- acute you look it up on a sheet of paper and then type ALT-0233. This is easier than messing around cutting and pasting from Charmap, which like many Windows utilities is a diabolical program.

Just as bad is that most spelling checkers object when you spell a word correctly, ie. if you write "cafe" they accept it, but if you write "caf" they say it's wrong. I have had to add such words to my custom dictionary, but this isn't always successful as the personal dictionaries on some types of software replace the accented characters with blobs or little squares. I think the blame for all this is with the legacy of ASCII, which was not designed to cope with a full character set. Software makers have been lazy and tried to change the spelling of the English language (and other languages) to force it to fit the limitations of early computers. It needn't have been this way, the British Amstrad computer, which used to be popular because it was the cheapest one available here, nevertheless gave you easy access to a full character set.

You know, I still find it easier and quicker to look up words in a (printed) dictionary or encyclopaedia on my desk than to use the ones on my computer! To use Encarta, I first have to insert the CD-ROM, and then... well by then I could have already looked it up in a book. And it's not that I'm resistant to new technology - I've been using computers for all my writing ever since leaving school (and we're talking quite a long time ago here! Before Apple purloined Xerox's idea of putting a graphic user interface on their computers anyhow).

well these are the same people who decided it would be so much easier to use a 2-digit code for the year instead of a 4-digit code. They assumed that by 2000 no one would still be using their OS anyway. Silly programmers!

"Doesn't ANYONE in this town wear pants?" ~Helen, Daria! The Musical "I've seen more people collapse this week..." ~Daria, Jake of Hearts

Hmmm...I don't think Quinn would really be that mean-spirited towards Daria, especially after "Speedtrapped". Sandi might be cruel enough to do something along those lines, but I doubt it. As for the "padding" argument, she certainly has the means, courtesy of Dr. Sharr, but we don't know if she ever got them back from Upchuck, and judging from the sarcastic reaction to them (A la "Oh, she's got my number all right...just what I need..."), and the occasions when we've seen her out of her regular outfit, I'd guess they're not needed. Especially if Daria takes after Helen in appearance.

At least one thing is obligatory at some point. The "Prom" episode. And then there is the completely absurd idea of Daria taking part in a student-exchange program (If any MTV guys are reading this, PLEASE DON'T send her to Paris, that's too clich. It's always the Eiffel tower. I think BH90210 did Paris. Have her visit the Oktoberfest instead.). MSB

p.s.: Speaking of the Oktoberfest. Anybody here planning a trip to Munich in September (yes, the Oktoberfest starts in September, don't ask me why)? You could visit me. I could talk my parents into reviving our guest room (we used to house foreign students). Of course I'm thinking about getting a place to stay for a return visit to the US. My mom's told me many times I should take part in one of those exchange programs, but I shudder at the possibility of being put into a family without email and newsfeed.

You can come stay with me. I have both. <VBEG> (and if things work out, you can get your green card...) *wink*

I just thought about another thing. Daria could be kidnapped for ransom. I can imagine scenes like the following.

(kidnapper calls Morgendorffer's to present his demands) Quinn - Hello, Sandi. kidnapper- No, this is.. Quinn - Please call later, I'm waiting for an important phone call. Bye. kidnapper- But... (Quinn hangs up phone)

Maybe it could be achieved that no one in Daria's family actually gets to know she's been kidnapped. In the end the kidnappers would go crazy and let her go, just before Trent and Jane can start a crazy rescue-mission. MSB
