I Finally Got a Chance to See "Quinn the Brain"

Yep, as a guy who didn't have cable during the earliest seasons of Daria, I finally got a chance to see QTB. I loved it! It was hilarious.

Things I liked about this ep:

(1) In imitation of Quinn, other girls at school start wearing lots of black. The Fashionistas can't get Quinn out of her new black outfits even by quoting chapter and verse from "Waif" magazine, which recommends eggplant. Quinn tellingly remarks: "I can't help it if I have influence at this school." Confirming once again, as if we needed reminding, that except for Quinn the FC girls are NOT particularly popular.

(2) Sandi goes to ask Daria to help change Quinn's ways and is suddenly so nervous she can only gulp and stammer. Other posters here have commented the FC finds Daria scary. Now I know why they say that. They tend to ignore her most of the time, of course.

(3) Daria at first complains her "identity" is being stolen. It obviously isn't. This is a rare example of Daria acting im- mature. Later she complains Quinn's writing is terrible and Quinn is just being pretentious. This is a more substantive criticism.

(4) I loved the way Daria looked when she stole Quinn's original look. She looked kinda hot, just between you and me.

QTB will definitely go on my list of favorite eps.

And interesting that, despite the popular wisdom that Quinn's popular because of her looks, in this case it's actually the reverse - her popularity enables her to influence what's considered good-looking.

Quinn's quite cute, of course, but she's hardly drop-dead gorgeous, even by high-school standards. She's popular largely because she's a great flirt and sweet-talker. The other FCers do rely solely on their looks, it appears.

Yep. If you had to narrow it down to one scene, that's the one.

Actually, they often make nasty comments when Daria's out of earshot. Mostly for Quinn's "benefit".

Well, she's also discovering that she LIKES being the "class brain". And the "family brain".

kinda??????

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Watch out you guys, you're sweating all over the animation cell! Aww, now she's wrinkled!

I'm afraid *I* for one beg to differ on this one, as my drawing-lust ended long ago with Jessica Rabbit...

"*What?!* What do ya mean she's just a drawing?!"

Oh! Jessica Rabbit....

You have not lived until you have been in a room full of men from all races, classes, and cultures get into a long heated discussion about a sexy female animated character, particularly Mrs. Rabbit.

Of course a real, living and breathing, female will distinctly point out that the object of their affection does not physically exist, so why go on and on about it?

The typical answer: "For the same reason we go to strip clubs. We know the boobs ain't real either. So what?!"

Such is the male animal...<God! I feel like a commentator on Animal Planet or something....>

Why?

The reply made a very valid point. There was no comeback to that one.

I suspect a translation problem:

pissed (UK): drunk pissed (US): annoyed

Whilst we're on the subject of misunderstood words it was announced in the news this week that the term "french fries" came about because World War I soldiers not only mangled the name "frites", but got the country wrong too (they're Belgian). Apparently Belgium has decided to make renewed efforts to set the record straight and reclaim their national dish.

I think we got into this debate last winter. Basically we said that the FC is nothing without Quinn.

If 'Fat Like Me', 'Daria Dance Party' and QTB didn't bear this out nothing else will.

I usually have a top 10 list of Daria episodes and, depending on my mood, the episodes rotate and change from time to time.

However, QTB has never dropped out of that list.

Not even once.
