Well, Well, Well.

I think it is time to remind everyone that DARIA IS A CARTOON, She is NOT, I emphasize NOT a real person. Therefor, If you have sexual fantasies about a cartoon.

THERE IS SOMTHING SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH YOU, YOU SHOULD CONSULT A PSYCHIATRIST IMMEDIETLY! AND MEET SOME REAL HUMAN PEOPLE OF THE OPPOSITE SEX!

Gah Gah Damnit!

True. I love Daria for her mind.

However I guess you haven't seen Little Annie Fannie.

According to Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary Contentious means:

"Tending to argument or strife; quarrelsome"... or "causing, involving, or characterized by argument or controversy" also: LEGAL TERM: "Pertaining to causes between contending parties".

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle...

so I guess a 'Contentious Objector' is someone who OBJECTS to being quarrelsome or arguementive. Or, he is simply a an Objector who is best described as 'Contentious'. Probably the second one.

re: thread title, as in WHAT THE HELL is Mr. Contentious Objector talking about?

and is it ok to have sexual fantasies about 'real' TV characters, like the girls from 'Friends'? (that's why 'real' is in quotes, BTW) How about women who wouldn't give you the time of day in real life? Or women who have been airbrushed? Maybe ALL sexual fantasies are bad and we should all just cut off our sexual organs so we aren't plauged by these demonic dreams any longer...

or maybe it's just harmless fun, who knows?

Don't know if this is a joke or not, but this subject is something I have to deal with considering I am a cartoonist myself and interested in media literacy. So I'll use the opportunity to bring this up...

As far as my informal observation on the subject goes, it's not unhealthy to have a "crush" or even have sexual fantasies about cartoon characters. It is in fact much easier to do so because of their iconic nature. With Daria's realistic personality and ultra simplistic rendering, it might be easier for fans to "fall in love" with her. It's very easy to create a fantasy around a character whose physical details the audience can subconsciously create. The more the merrier. You also get this thing where some fan artists get so hung up on characters that they draw more realistic versions of the characters in an attempt to --- "realize their actuality". It happens in almost all cartoon fandoms I have seen. There's nothing wrong or abnormal or unhealty about it. As long as you keep your mind's distance from a fictional character on the screen... you can really get into her and all but you have a keen grasp on reality and know for sure she is fake and that fact doesn't bother you... you are okay, which I'm sure most Daria fans are.

You start running into health problems when you fail to see the difference between real and fantasy, and most of your attention is put on fantastical characters rather than interaction with real people (which I have actually seen. usually these people have really screwed up views of society and women). There's also a danger with objectification of females with cartoon characters with this.

I imagine the original post might be a response to that "erotic" Daria fan art that was solicited here earlier. Well, yeah, I personally think it's in very poor taste, but there's really nothing wrong with it. In the 7 years I've run through cartoon fandoms, I've seen all sorts erotic cartoon pictures, and I'm dulled to the sensation of seeing cartoon character X naked/bent over/having anal sex/etc... and even met many of the people who drew them (who usually surprise me by being perfectly normal people) so I guess I can understand the mentality. Yet still I can't have sexual fantasies about cartoons. I just can't seem to get over the fact that cartoons are fake, and it's difficult to imagine it. The only way I've been able to actually see that kind of thing actualized is if some person draws it and shoves it in my face (which has happened on quite a regular basis. I have horror stories), and I never draw it myself. But that stuff still threw me back from potential careers. You get blacklisted by publishers for even having a conversation with porn fan artists. In my case it was with a legitimate publisher that published slightly risque material (I only agreed to do clean stuff, but that didn't stop the McCarthyism from striking me).

Personally I don't find Daria very attractive in a sexual sense, and as for Laura Croft, Yuk! But I am pro choice. If you don't like nudity or pornography whatever form it may take, don't look at it.

I guess it's alright if you lay low like I do now, but it's really just because they don't like it. Just like any other kinda social/business order, they figure you're a perv fanboy so you probably aren't worth anything. Keep in mind I didn't even draw anything even remotely with sex in it, not even naked people, I just did business with someone who everyone *thought* was a dirty perv publisher (ie: they published stuff by artists who did that kinda stuff).

I imagine it was just the circle of people I was dealing with at the time, so I'm not saying this is a universal thing.

I think there may have been a problem, MSB, in your choice of the word "erotic" to describe them. I've always understood "erotic" as "tending to promote sexual stimulation in the viewer or reader." The word does derive from "eros"!

NODE[1] defines "erotica" as "literature or art intended to arouse sexual desire."

There are plenty of nudes in galleries fequented by school visits: but a teacher who took kids to a gallery displaying erotica would face severe consequences (and rightly so, IMHO).

I've not looked at your pictures, MSB, so I can't comment on them.

Maybe I'm speaking from a biased viewpoint here, but maybe this whole controversy, and my oh so silly slip up of forgetting to seperate the erotic from the sexually graphic is something to think about in itself. Like I said, I do understand where you're coming from. I had to deal with the whole erotic vs. porn thing when I was dealing with other artists 5 years ago. There was a difference, damn it, and I was trying to explain that. But when you draw a picture of a naked cartoon character, especially one that is a famous tv character, you instantly go from artistic integrity to instant perv in the eyes of most people. And eventually I reverted back to that thought process after a short battle with it. The whole ordeal of you having to explain that difference to everyone is kinda taxing, and you realize lots of people don't really care, they just see fan art of a naked cartoon character. And if you think about it, what does that look like to some passing Daria fan?

Again, I had already seen those pictures the day you solicited them, and the reason I didn't like them is because your execution could have been a tiny bit better, and I was also having some difficulties accepting the varying level of iconicism within the drawing, a usual problem with cartoon characters drawn nude (but that's something you actually did fairly well), what with an unexpected line or two popping up in the body and leg areas with a familiar Daria icon head. But the big one for me was just the whole idea of the story behind the picture seemed way too off key for a Daria story. In my own opinion. It seemed inconsistent with the whole Daria being. Well, I felt kinda stupid saying I didn't like your picture without explaining why. I didn't mean poor taste as in "dirty". And again, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with creating that art, but that's just what I thought.

Try doing it with the original legs. Daria would look like an alien. I think my picture is a good compromise between the original style and something at least moderately human.

Maybe it's because of our different cultural background that we interpret her differently. I think the story would be fitting. But there's no need for us to argue about this. It's the same as with all fan fiction. Some think a specific fanfic is out of character, some disagree.

Thanks for clearing it up. MSB

Yes. And I read it, too (before I made that post).

Sorry, I didn't mean to do that. Maybe I should have put a disclaimer or explanation, or something, but I was just trailing off into the next thing I thought of. I know the difference between the two as well (porn/nude imagery), but in my experience, it almost doesn't matter trying to explain that difference to many people.

ah, but you see, this is the problem with people who vehemently and categorically attack things is that they get great pleasure in having no knowledge of what they're attacking ("what? of course I didn't look at that filth!") when the only way to know if it's filth is to look at it... sort of a vicious circle... so you either look and get grossed out or don't and keep your mouth shut ideally but too many don't look and don't keep their mouths shut.
