In my morning newspaper an Associated Press story begins as follows:

"To cut down on the soda, snacks and sweets children are eating, the government wants to require that all food sold in schools meets nutrition standards. That could mean an end to SODA MACHINES IN THE HALLS ...." (emphasis mine).

The article goes on to say that this would require an act of Congress, since current law allows the Dept of Agriculture to set nutrition standards for school cafeteria food but not vending machine food.

On the other hand, Ms Li is not alone in her Ultra Cola ideas: 200 school districts in the US have an exclusive contract with a soft-drink company to supply soda for their schools. Charles County, Maryland, is mentioned in the article as receiving $175,000 a year from their contract with Coca-Cola.

Was it Heinlein who said that governments tend to make everything either forbidden or mandatory?

I can remember several years ago when I made that jump from fifth grade to sixth grade, and thus moving to another school. At the intermediate school they had a soda machine. I thought that was pretty cool even though you couldn't drink them in the cafeteria (even if it was juice in a can). But they took it away a year or two later and everyone was sad.
