#301 or #307... which goes first?

Just a question out of curiosity here:

So, "Daria!" (ep 307) was released early as a "sneak preview" of sorts -- though the commercials all called it the "season premiere". No matter what the episode number is, that in my mind makes it the first ep of the season. Additionally, after #213 aired Thursday, what did we get today? #307. OTOH, MTV's not the most reliable source for getting things in order.

So my question is: which really comes first? I assume it was handed down from official sources that "Daria!" is the 7th ep of the season, not the first, but does that really mean anything when it's being aired the way it is?

I'm only wondering because I'm trying to get the series in correct order on tape. What to do when there's TWO correct orders? :]

I guess it all depends on whether you prefer the order in which they aired, which would put "Daria!" first, or the production order, which would put "Daria!" between the upcoming "It Happened One Nut" (#306) and "Lane Miserables" (#308).

Personally, I have 'em on tape in the order they aired, since I don't want to risk blowing a good set of SP-recorded episodes just to get them in production order. Not after all the work I went through to *get* them. :-)

First, ask yourself, is there a hyphen in anal-retentive? ;-) I agree with Martin-- go with the order that they were aired in. (Of course, for UK viwers of C5, you can just slap 'em on a tape in any old random order-- odds are, you'll be close to the C5 airing order. <g>) Besides, it's difficult enough to get a clean copy of an ep (what with MTV's not-too-precise airing schedule) without having to worry about which tape to put it on.

If either episode ever actually *airs* in the US. :P

Yeah, that's what I did. No point in gettin' things any more complicated than they already are.

Yup. Fate and MTV conspired to screw up my attempt to get Season 1 in the right order (the cable got yanked through no fault of my own... long story.) Now I'm waiting for Season 1 to come back around again, and hoping the show doesn't pull another random disappearing act.

A random side note: I work less than a 10 minute walk from my home, so I commonly run home during the day to fix lunch. If I time it right, I can cut out one of the commercial breaks from Daria. Why bother? 'Cause 13 eps just MIGHT fit on a 6 hour tape with the commercials cut... but they sure won't if MTV's 5 minute ad blocks are left in. :]

Not in the UK, we got #301, Through a Lens Darkly, first. But we didn't get Daria! as the 7th one either, it was slotted in the middle somewhere.

Whilst it's true that technical factors can cause production order of a show to differs from the intended screening order, I would have thought this was less likely with a cartoon than a live action show. I think the reason that Daria! went out as the premiere on MTV was the same reason the second half of season 3 has been delayed - the schedulers are a few sandwiches short of a picnic. TALD was supposed to the opener, and it is ideally suited to the role, as it brings new viewers up to speed on what Daria is about. Daria! on the other hand is atypical of the series as a whole, but would be fine for starting the second half. And of course bringing it forward meant something from the first half had to be dropped, hence no-one outside Australia has seen #306 yet, as it was relegated to part two.
