Well, I just figured I'd share a little bit of good news I got with the Group as well--- I got into UNC's Masters Program in Journalism. I'm still waiting to hear from Columbia, Berkeley, and UT-Austin, but now at least I know I'm in somewhere.
Hey, that's great news!!! It'd be totally cool if you could get into UT Austin too...have yet to run into a fellow Texan Darianite online, whereas in the Duraine circles I know a few Austinites and a few Dallasites...and in the Whosers circles there are actually TWO people from San Antonio...but I digress...that's a cool bit of news...I'm so happy for you. :)
For some really weird reason, my news server has kept two of Mindy's posts on its server, and it keeps resending them whenever I hit "Get all headers." So now I have several repeats of Mindy's messages. Weird or what?
For the record, I usually use "Get new headers" anyway, but I tried "Get all headers" several times to see if I missed any messages.
I also find that I don't get the spam messages that you folks have been responding to. But I think that's 'cause my news server is defaulted to reject spam. That's a good thing I suppose.
Ah well, news servers get wonky sometimes. Sometimes I won't get any message at all, and sometimes I get them all at once. Go figure.
ps: That was just an excuse to use my current favorite word. Wonky!
Cheers, Nicole Lee

I know what it is-- somehow, all of my Mindy messages are being rerouted to you. ;-)
Personally, I just love to see Agent say "Finished retrieving bodies." It always makes we want to yell. "Excellent, Igor! Now, watch us become gods!" ;-)
Yup. No spam here either. Ahh...
Yeah, wonky's a good word... dunno what my current overused word is-- I'll have to keep an eye out for it. ;-)

Jake: I love camping! I love it! ... Has anybody seen my pants?
Just to add to the general feel-good mood, I finally got the Windows Solitaire program to work again after the installing of Internet Explorer 5 trashed it a week ago. Full sordid story in my online diary (link on my homepage - see sig.) I can't begin to describe how relieved I am at being able to squander all my time playing a trivial card game again.
And now, a new and improved, even happier rich-- I got a fellowship. Apparently, if you're smart enough, they'll PAY you to go to grad school. Neat or what? ;-)
Sorry, Nicole-- unless the folks at Berkeley get me a car or condo or something, I may not be back for a while, 'cept maybe to visit every now and then. But the horse-trading won't begin till I hear from the other school. ;-)
blissfully happy to no longer stare debt in the face, rich.
Quinn: I can't be a brain! My friends will hate me!
Yep, that's the main reason I am able to go for a master's full time - I don't get paid a whole lot, but more than enough to save a little and pay for my car. In fact I bet 95% of grad students in Engineering here at VU have some sort of deal that pays tuition either through their company, the department or a faculty memeber.
I still have student loans from the ole undergrad days - but I don't have to start paying it off until the real dough is rolling in ;)
Well, the really cool part is that by being a grad assistant, I get even more experience than I would have had I just been a regular grad student. That, and the contact with the faculty will (hopefully) help in landing a decent job out of grad school.
Heh-- at UNC, the tuition is so laughably low that I have just about -0- debt to worry about from undergrad AND law school. All of my expenses were things like food and shelter.
BTW-- glad to hear you're feeling better. That flu is a real bear-- it knocked me out for two rather hellish weeks. :P
I *never* feel like doing much. But I have to go to work so I can pay my bills, dammit. Life isn't fair. :-) On the other hand, one advantage of going to work right out of high school is, no college expenses whatsoever. :-)
Yeah, but you miss those 4 years of whatever the hell it was I did in college. ;-) It's not just about classes, it's also about hall crawls and tunnel parties-- oh, wait-- they don't have those anymore, do they? Ah, well, at least I got my slackin' in. ;-)
As my father once said, "College students are the last great leisure class. They might as well spend 4 years on a cruise ship full of booze, and just hand out the degrees when they carry 'em off the ship. The kids we get applying to our company are about that well-educated, sometimes." Heh, nice to know where I get some of my curmudgeonliness from. ;-) Of course, he said this in 1990, when college students still drank. ;-)
rich.
Mr. O'Neill: Let's pledge to make Daria's dream a reality!
Daria: You mean the one where people walking down the street burst into flames?
I would say no, by the simple fact that I've got no idea what a tunnel party is (we do have a tunnel on campus, does that have anything to do with it?)
There's always room for slackin'
Snuh?!?!
They were just attracting the wrong applicants ;)
I guess I'm evidence of this - I went through college only getting drunk a couple of times, most of which were during senior week, which is technically after completing graduation requirements. Then again, I'm an engineering major, so there wasn't a whole lot of free time left over anyway
Ah... No. A tunnel party is like a hall crawl, but instead, you go to a local large appliance store and get a bunch of refrigerator boxes. Make the party a lot more interesting. ;-)
Yeah, it's a lot like Jell-O in that regard.
Things were a little different on campus in 1990. Let's just say insurance companies had a lot to do with the much drier atmosphere on campuses.
Err....
I wouldn't know much about engineering majors-- I went to a liberal arts school.
rich.
Jane: Usually when I have this dream I'm wearing pink taffeta.
It's very interesting... until, of course, some stupid frat boy hurls inside one of the tunnels. Then it's not any fun at all. :P
<in best Quinn voice> That's so sad... there are these places... uh, parks, I think they're called? They're like, FULL of trees... ;-) </in best Quinn voice>
rich.
Quinn: I can't be a brain! My friends will hate me!
*sputter* ONE loan? ONE? *whine* I've had to take out THREE loans to pay for school, THREE!! And this is with the scholarship that's supposed to take care of half the tuition! All these other damn expenses like computer facilities fees, student services fees, et. al., plus books expenses that total about $300 per semester...*whine*...*pout*...I'm gonna sit here in a corner and rock myself back and forth saying, "I'm a butterfly, I'm a butterfly, I'm a butterfly, I'm a butterfly..."
If it makes you feel any better, it was a prettey big loan ;)
Those textbook prices are outrageous. Another thing they try to get you on is a meal plan - thank goodness I never had to get one because I lived at home
Well, you know how many scholarships I'm getting? ZERO. None at all. I'm not of any ethnic group whatsoever (or, rather, I'm of too many of them)... not going into the right fields... my parents don't work for major companies... my GPA is not that great... the one ACT score scholarship in existence, I don't qualify for.

Dagny-- I've been there before-- why do you think I went to state school undergrad? I couldn't afford anything else. I was a National Merit Finalist, and didn't get one frickin' dime. And that's why the fellowship has me totally gobsmacked-- I don't belong to any underrepresented groups, I haven't done anything that I consider remarkable-- I just had a good application. *Shrug*
It's ironic that academic prowess isn't rewarded nearly as much as it should be. Apparently, we should all learn how to bounce balls, as we'd have better shots at scholarships. :P
rich.
Helen: Bureaucracy is the price we pay for impartiality.
Hmmm, sounds like me. I wasn't a finalist but I was a semi-finalist and probably had one of the highest SAT scores in my school, was going in for computers AND I'm female but I still didn't get any scholarships. :( Now I'm working and am forced to pay back my student loan now. *shudder* At least it's not too bad as I only got an Associate's degree and lived at home. Oh well, it's a happy day! I'm 21 now! Yay! Not that I really drink but it's just cool. Unfortunately this means a trek to the BMV for a new license. ewww, the picture...the line...the people...
