If you haven't seen the Mystik Spiral video, "Freakin' Friends", go to the "Is It Fall Yet" page at http://daria.mtv.com/ and WATCH IT.

Now, we all want a 6th season, right?

Here's one way to help one along.

START REQUESTING "Freakin' Friends" ON TRL!!!!

If you go to http://www.mtv.com/ , you can get to the TRL voting page. There is also the (800) DIAL MTV phone number...it opens up at 2pm EDT, 1pm CDT, 12 Noon MDT and 11am PDT.

Also if you live in NYC, start showing up in front of 1515 Broadway with Mystik Spiral signs!

I'm sure that Carson Daly will be into this, because after all, he IS making a cameo appearance in "Is It Fall Yet?."

I don't know what you're talking about, but it'd be very cool if someone were to take what you didn't talk about and make some kinda TRL vote utility with VisualBasic or something else fairly simple. Don't ask me, I haven't tried programming in years. But it'd be nice...you could either use it to A) get stuff shown or, failing that, B) expose TRL to be a rigged-up fraud.

I'm sorry, I should've put (sarc!) after that for those who missed my earlier post about the whole idea of getting a video by a ficticious band from an animated program on TRL being ludicrous and how the only way it COULD happen were if MTV had specifically asked the people behind Daria to create a video so as to be SHOWN on TRL and thus maybe rope some more people (Daria fans) into watching it, though not TRL fans to Daria as Daria's new season is a long while off from now.

In short, it's my belief that TRL is exactly what it seems to be: a place where record companies that pay enough money get short-form ads for their crappy pop discs played and thus get thousands of teenaged kids everywhere to be their consumers.

And it sucks.

Well, of course that's what it is. Is there anything else it *could* be? The music and media industry is currently structured in such a way that content is of very little importance. In the case of music, that just means that the most popular "musicians" will be people who may not play any instruments or even be able to carry a tune, but they look really good and can perform various dance steps "in sync," if you will. Image sells much faster and more effectively than content. It's like instant gratification.

Luckily, for those of us who can see through this and find such entertainment lacking in substantive nourishment, there still exist other options, and we will continue to seek out new alternatives to what is marketed as mainstream. As of yet, we are still allowed to have minds of our own.

Back when I was in college, I took The History of Rock n Roll (yes, I went to a real, accredited university, and yes, it was a real class -- it fulfilled one of my upper-division credits), and the prof mentioned that the money for videos come out of the advertising budget for a band. I also used to be the arts and features editor for my college paper, and anytime a band or artist would come into town for a concert, mysteriously, that band or artist would be all over the (what was then called) "college" radio stations.

Just something to think about.

Hmm...MTV has the Daria folk assemble an animated rock video for a ficticious band, and the song is featured in an animated TV movie which also features the host of TRL. Coincidence? I think not. This seems like a carefully plotted ruse to boost TRL viewership. Don't try to argue it's a stab at boosting the ratings for Daria, as it's new season is several months off, and MTV tends not to show Daria reruns regularly in the off-season.
