Bad omen for Daria DVDs...Paramount botched R&S set

If Paramount Home Video will actually be the ones to put out Daria DVDs, we have a very bad omen in the recently released Ren & Stimpy Complete 1st and 2nd Season DVD set.

Paramount Home Video used the wrong tapes on some of the episodes (where have I heard that one before?) so some Nickelodeon edits of episodes have been perpetuated to this supposedly "definitive" set.

Some other episodes suffer some of the same digital ugliness familiar to those who have "Is It Fall Yet?" as well.

The best hope for a QUALITY Daria DVD release would be if MTV Home Video went the same route Nickelodeon did with "Invader Zim" and licensed Daria to an Anime distributor like Nick did with Media Blasters. I actually would rather Geneon got it because they make ultra high quality releases, but Media Blasters would be OK or maybe even ADV Films.

However, there are transfer/digitization/aliasing problems which have nothing to do with source material. Basically Paramount cheaped out on production costs. Again. :P

However...good news is on the horizon...a new "white knight" might have entered the jousting arena on the Daria DVD front. Although I cannot mention who it is, it's not Paramount Home Video. Which apparently might be a Good Thing(tm).

Part of "Sven Hoek" had to be reconstructed from U-Matic 3/4" videocassette. I know this because someone complained about the timecode on it. That comment jumped out at me because I know the source for the timecoded video. I have "Sven Hoek" on VHS that was dubbed from this very cassette. There are no sound effects nor music. Perhaps the crappy sources might be the reason why the finished product looks so bad in places. Note my comment about having stuff on VHS that doesn't exist on D2 anymore: some of the source material for this set is from tapes from the Spumco archives that were on 3/4" U-Matic. It's better than VHS...hell, Betamax is better than VHS...but not by much.

This raises a very huge question. How much of "Daria" is preserved by MTV? For that matter, how much of "MTV's Downtown," "Aeon Flux," "Beavis and Butt-Head" and "The Maxx" to name the finest of MTV Animation's output between their founding and their dissolution?

I tremble in fear at what MTV Networks may have done with these shows. <sigh>

Anyway, if you were an R&S fan, get the 1st and 2nd Season boxed set. It might be an indirect message to Viacom that other MTV Networks animated series could be lucrative if released to DVD. Also, to be blunt: this is as good as it gets, because so much was lost.

Anyone who is a Doctor Who fan could tell you with great sadness the havoc an uninterested broadcaster can do on a defunct television series. 108 episodes of this iconic sci-fi show have been lost, including most of the work of the late great Patrick Troughton, thanks to the BBC wanting to free up storage space.

I share your fear. It does seem that episodes of B&B they show on MTV2 seem to have little variety. Where are all the other episodes?
