C5's Daria replacement show?

Although Daria is in some kind of purgatory on Channel 5 in the UK, they have started an intriguing new anime series on Saturday mornings right after the Powerpuff Girls, called Strange Dawn. Has anyone been watching it? One of the two girls in it reminds me of Jane Lane. Her hair, general demeanour and voice are all rather similar to Jane's (although her accent has a faint Germaine Greer twang). It's about two girls who are lost in a strange world populated by miniature people, and trying to find their way home. Trekking across terrain which at times evokes the Australian outback it is in some ways reminiscent of the Jenny Agutter film Walkabout. I love the naturalism of the girls' concerns - instead of saying "hey a whole new world in a parallel universe, let's be heroes and fight monsters!", they come out with things like "we don't have any clean knickers - what are we going to do about it?" The downbeat tone of it is quite Dariaesque, and like Daria the main protaganists have proper voices instead of the manic falsetto tones that tend to be found in dubbed children's anime.

There seems to have been a sudden upsurge since Pokemon aired on ITV a year or two ago: Digimon (ITV), Cardcaptors (ITV), Time Detective Flint (BBC), Sailor Moon (ITV) (albeit it turns out they only bought the first 13 episodes, which is a shame as it isn't really any good until about episode 30 or so). I think there might be some others too but I can't think of any offhand (although there are several on satellite tv cartoon channels of course.).

Oddly enough, the time they broadcast it suggests they're aiming at something like the 5-10 age group, as with the Powerpuff Girls (which is also much more suited to an older audience I think). Another odd thing is how it just has an English language soundtrack plonked on top of the original anime without any visual touch ups - even the episode titles are in untranslated Japanese! I bet not many small children can read Level 3 kanji.

Okay, those are/have all shown in the US as well (BTW, Cardcaptors is almost as bad as what happened to those poor three series mixed-and-matched to make Robotech. CardCaptor Sakura is much better). Strange Dawn seems to be the exception.

Well, PPGs does have a more adult level of humor (witness "The Beat-Alls" episode), but they've also got the kid humor, and the adult stuff is just references the kids won't get.

Probably not, but you'll be seeing a lot more of that (if you watch anime, at any rate). The more vocal anime fans are decidedly peeved at overlays. The trend with most studios is to use soft (or hard, when necessary) subs and only use overlays where they absolutely have to. The fist disc of Evangelion has been remasterd partly because of this issue.

and the worst of the bunch - imo - is Yo-Gi-Oh! (or someth. like that) of which i've seen one episode. This one is the lowest of the low... :)

it's un-freaking-believable. Btw, it looks like it might have been an American (Korean-drawn of course) attempt to imitate japanime. I just can't believe that the Japanese can do something as atrocious in their own genre.

Yes, with all the others I think we're getting the US dubs, but with Strange Dawn it's an Australian dub (though the accents are mild enough that many UK viewers haven't noticed them - I still think Emi sounds English. Oddly enough I understand it hasn't actually aired on Australian TV yet, the C5 screening is apparently the world premiere for the English language version (reminiscent of when it showed some Daria episodes before MTV a couple of years ago perhaps...).

I thought it ironic that an American reviewer of the DVD said he found the Australian accents "disturbing", since this is exactly how I feel when characters such as A-ko (Project A-ko) or Sakura (Cardcaptors) open their mouths and instead of a cute Japanese voice, a strong American drawl comes out.

Heh. I happen to agree, which is why I mostly watch subs. There are a couple of good dubs (Shinesman, Cowboy Bebop), but for the most part it's a better idea to watch the original.

Speaking of which, I'm taking an e-mail break from UshiCon right now. I'll be back there in an hour or so, and later today they're showing the English screener of Excel Saga. There are only a couple of series I can think of that could tax a voice-actress more, so of course I'm going to have to stop by and check out the carnage...
