About "Daria!" last night

The songs in last night's episode were much better than I thought it would be. Great harmonizing. Jake was a powder keg ready to explode at any minute. And did he wreck the car just a few feet away from his house? I laughed all the way through.

My favorite parts were when Quinn and Helen were singing "I Can't Leave Yet", the part where Helen and Jake were talking to Trent on the phone, and when Jake says to Trent "Your daughter and my sister are out there,: and Trent says "That doesn't sound right."

I think that these are the titles of the 7 songs (the TV Guide said there were 7): Morning in the 'Burbs If the Town Blew Away I Can't Leave Yet Gah, Gah, Damn It! They Must Be Worried Manly The Big, Wet Rainstorm's Over

Maybe this will mean that Mtv will finally put out a Daria CD. I hope so. They've merchandised evrything else they could think of.

No. This is how it was spelled on the closed captioning.

I just can't buy it. Maybe 'Gah, God damn it.' 'Gah, gah, damn it' just takes too long to say. Where does the text for CC come from, anyway? If it comes directly from the script, I guess I can accept that is what was said, although it doesn't make much sense. Otherwise, I'll have to write it off as some kind of transcription error or weird censorship.

Looks like the same 4 syllables to me. I don't understand how one takes longer to say than the other!

I still vote for "God, God, Dammit". He probably just pronounced it "Gah-Gah" because if you actually pronounced the "D" it just doesn't sound very good musically and it's just plain hard to say quickly...try it!

My own take on the situation:

The people behind Daria decided they wanted to make the show "irreverant" so they could cash in on the vast popularity of the television show South Park. They wrote down the lyrics as "Gah, Gah Dammit!," as Jake says both "Gahhh!" and "Dammit!" quite frequently. They knew, however, that people hearing it would assume he was saying "God, God Dammit!" They had to. I think they were hoping to get some press by people who might be offended...

I think that's also the reason for the comments about Brittany's breasts that were made at different points. My only hope is that the rest of the 3rd season doesn't keep up the same "irreverance." Oh well, that's my own two cents.

I noticed somehow that scene reminded me of South Park, particularly the things with the reactions from people in other cars.

I do say though that the reason it was "gah dammit" was because "god god dammit" is really hard to sing like that.

Can you even say "God damn it" on tv? They probably wrote it as "Gah, gah, damn it" so some people wouldn't be ofended.

I doubt they have a copy of the script, else they wouldn't have made the error in "Manly." ("...home of a Y chromosome" became "whack cromosome" inexplicably.) But: I believe that the spelling is an artful dodge to get the song past the censors. "Goddamnit" is one of the magic words you can't say on TV unless you're South Park. So to keep the TV-PG rating, they slid the "Gah" in there. "See, it's not Goddamnit, he's just saying Gah twice. Nothing wrong with that!" And since you can get away with "Damnit" and keep a PG rating, it's OK.
