Daria on CBS???

Big news from Show-Biz...Viacom and CBS are merging!!!

Could this mean that Our Heroine might wind up on "the Tiffany network"?

Fortunately for all of us, though, Viacom is the acquirer of CBS, not the other way around. Otherwise, CBS might try to plunder Viacom's various properties for shows to boost its ratings. Can you imagine: "Star Trek: The Search For Regularity." Given CBS' target demo, it's not too far a stretch. It'll be interesting to see whether their target demo changes now that Viacom is in the driver's seat. And what will happen to little orphan UPN? Will Time Warner be too far behind?

All in all, though, I think Viacom won't mess with the Status Quo too much. CBS is actually doing pretty well these days, and Viacom's other properties are doing pretty well, too. I think there may be some synergies, like the ability to promote the hell out of the next Star Trek movie for free on CBS, but other than that, I doubt that Redstone will rock the boat too much. Looks like they're mainly interested in the money.

Yeah? I was too busy watching a nail get hammered into a coffin labelled "Daria". Well, at least one more season's contracted. Hopefully I'll be employed and living elsewhere by the time ep #413 ends and then I won't be mad if I can't get MTV in my new home.:\

Um, I hate to rain on your rain, but if you look at the press release for the "Sick Sad Life Planner," and look at the language used, I wouldn't worry about #413 being the last ep. You don't cancel a "Hit Show" when you're "leveraging [it] into successful new media formats." Granted, there are always risks, and there hasn't been any official word yet, but the show seems to be doing pretty well. As I said earlier-- it costs too much to develop new shows to kill one off that's actually doing pretty well. (And they wouldn't be bringing back the Daily Dose if it wasn't putting butts in front of screens-- they'd run something else faster than you could say "Boy Band.")

As for shows that may need help, well, if you like "Downtown," it might not be a bad idea to send MTV a letter letting them know, as renewal decision time is coming, and there's still no word on a season 2 for it, either.

Oh, and the CBS acquisition should have -0- effect on either show, so take a deep cleansing breath, and start warming up the VCR for the return of the daily dose on Monday 9/13 at 3PM. (And tape every episode of "Downtown" you can-- you never know.)

This is the FIRST time I've seen Daria advertised on a network OTHER than MTV, yes its a TV listings channel but we'll take what we can get, does this mean they'll actually put some more effort into promoting the show and attracting some new viewers? Probably not, but still it was advertised on another station besides MTV, FOR ONCE, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.

The question: What do you think Daria would say if she found out she was in reality very popular, and had a group of devoted fans such as ourselves?

She would think we were crazy folks who chose an animated character as a role model :) This was actually somewhat like what Daria said in one of those Ask Daria segments, although not in those exact words.

But seriously, I wouldn't know. I know I would feel somewhat better about myself if I knew I had 'fans', but I can't speak for everyone else here. Actually, I'd find it kinda scary too. I'd have to board up my windows, face flashing cameras, and tabloid tell-all books! Oh no! I can just picture Daria's face cringe in horror when she reads all those really really *bad* fanfics! Aah! The humanity!

You're probably right there, if it was Quinn, she would be hitting up all the male posters here to buy her stuff and drive her places, you know Quinn would love the attention:-)

I think we all do, there are some great ones, but when they're bad..."The horror...the horror" I think that about says it all for bad fics :-)

Or you could go live in a cabin in the woods with a supply of Daria tapes, a VCR, and a portable generator, ready for the inevitable collapse of civilization when Daria finally does go off the air. A Daria Survivalist.

Don't forget an arsenal to defend your cache of Daria tapes. When Daria goes off the air...well...things could turn ugly.

I worry about humans more than the human-spawned problems. :) After all, the problems can be fixed, but the humans that made them just keep spawning more problems.... kind of like rats. Pause to reload the shotgun and there's already more of 'em.:)
