Ambivalence about Channel 5 (UK); UK source for Daria videos?

Hello, fellow Morgendorfferphiles, especially UK ones.

I'm feeling ambivalent about channel five (did ee cummings design their logo and write their Teletext, sorry, teletext, style sheet?).

I discovered Daria because of channel five: good.

The c5 Continuity Announcer mocks Our Girl(s) when he introduces the show: bad. Do people who feel an affinity with Daria and Jane feel derided because of his remarks? Feel labelled as miseries or (frequent one, this) manic depressives? I get angry about that one; it was only a brief course on mental disorder that I studied (IIRC 13 x two hour sessions), but it was enough for me to know that mocking, trivialising use of medical terms is not the height of responsibility...

/pompous_mode=off/ !

I guess the c5 continuity announcer, or whoever writes his links, is just a *huge* Quinn fan! 8-)

Daria is on at eleven every Sunday: good.

UK Morgendorfferphiles have pointed out here that the channel five episodes are sliced: bad.

I don't have satellite or cable, so MTV is no solution for me. I do have a V90 modem, but thanks to BT, connections above 38K are as rare as hen's teeth: the streaming episodes from daria.org arrive on my PC more slowly than it takes a thought to form in what Kevin probably likes to refer to as his mind. *Please* don't tell me to get up and try at six in the morning, when websites hosted on American servers load faster for UK users...

So, a question: does anyone know if Daria is available, in the UK, on video? If so, from where?

Waiting with bated breath.

Martin.

What does he say? The ubiquitous Carson Daly is always referring to her as "the lovely Daria", yet I feel he doesn't quite mean it. I mean, for God's sake, he hangs out with that revolting new veejay...er, whassisname. The slack jawed, gum-smacking one whose idiocity is championed by MTV. Everyone still thinks Daria is the misery chick (even some of the fanfics I've seen) and it's frustrating. My own Mom keeps close to the phone in case she feels the sudden need to book me into a depression clinic (Hey, what can you do? At least she cares.)

That's too bad. Have they aired all the episodes in England yet?

This I do not know. The purists complain that a lot of the real incidental music from the show got replaced with more generic stuff, but you get the advantage of not having to see ads for "The Waterboy", "Dead man on Campus", or whatever MTV is advertising when you tape it manually, "Real World", "Loveline", the list goes on and on...and you avoid those nasty MTV sound booth mess-ups. But even in the US, we only have episodes 1, 2, and 3 on video.

Do I understand this correctly? They air ads *inside* the Daria episode? If so, another plus for c5: the ads are before and after, not during! And they haven't yet, as far as I know, (m)ucked up the sound.

Yes, all of the episodes except "Sealed With A Kick" have been shown in the UK. Although I'm not sure if MTV ever showed "Gifted", in which case they should be showing it for the first time tonight.

Voiceover over the closing credits (CHANNEL 5 -DON'T DO THIS!): "Oh dear. There has to be a moral to this story but I for one can't see it. Anyway, if you want to be intellectually challenged again next Sunday, then delightful, delirious, depressive Daria hits 5 again at 11 o'clock".

8th November 1998 ("I don't")

Intro: "Daria. A young lady who would love a stock market crash, playing with venomous snakes and being generally miserable. But now she's set for a happy occasion. Oh dear - something has to give."

Close: "And the little light of Daddy's life dons the depressive cap again next Sunday, at 11, on 5."

I really get the impression the continuity announcer doesn't understand what's going on...

If anyone's interested, I'll keep posting these (if I remember!).

Especially as manic depression only affects 5% of depressives.

I think so. It took ages for them to show The Misery Chick, they'd shown the rest of season 1 but they didn't show that one for months. I don't think it airs them in order, which is confusing. I still haven't seen The New Kid 'cos it's only been aired once and I missed it. :(

I can remember several occasions on which lines or scenes have been cut out. In "Road Worrier", when Jane says "The cops did that to you, didn't they? Bastards.", "bastards" was excised. The same with Jake's horror story in "The Teachings Of Don Jake". In "College Bored", the whole frat geek/panties scene was removed. If anybody's taping the C5 showings, look for yourself.

Sound! "There's a difference between a bad mood and a psychiatric disorder," and, "Depression isn't the same as having a bad day," would make fine slogans for mental health awareness campaigns! And, at least in the UK, we do need such campaigns to (i) overcome public ignorance about mental illness; (ii) challenge the "Pull yourself together!" response; and (iii) encourage people to seek treatment. Depression is *not* unhappiness by another name, or to a greater degree; it is qualitatively different.

<long words - help!> That's all very true. People still think they're the same thing. They can be similar in effect, but the causes and symptoms are totally different. Last year, when I was taken to a doctor for being constantly tired and run-down and all, I was given this pamphlet-thing with a list of symptoms of depression. My mother read it, and went back and told the doctor, "No, she's fine, she only shows one or two of these, she's not at all depressed, why would she be?" without even asking me how I felt and I guess that shows how most people think you need an actual _reason_ to be depressed.

Enough with the long words! Anything longer than two syllables scares me!

I was in denial of my depression until a few weeks ago when I took a long hard look at my life and realized that I had nothing to be unhappy about. I finally realized I had most of the symptoms but I ignored them, for example I looked at sharp objects and saw them as something I could use to open my viens or to do harm to myself or someone else instead of seeing them as the common everyday tools used to make life easier. Then it dawned on me I've been having these thoughts for years. I've been feeling run-down and out of energy for a long time. I've been filling my life with material objects in an attempt to hide from the feeling of emptyness and hopelessness. I bought myself a new guitar and after i went through the usual steps of setting it up just like I like it and breaking it in I did'nt have the energy or desire to play the thing. I also noticed I did'nt have the creative energy that I used to have, I used to fill up sketch books with drawings, poetry/lyrics, song ideas, comics, flyers for a friends band etc... one day It just stopped. I started to simply go through the motions of everyday life, work-watch TV-sleep 5 days, watch TV-sleep 2 days. Now that I realize there may be something wrong with me I feel better, I can almost face life again.

The worst part, for me, in dealing with this is talking to the people around me about it. Most of the time they dole out nuggets of advise like "don't be depressed" "cheer up" "maybe you need to get out more, get some fresh air, make some friends" and yes I even had to put up with "everybody gets depressed" they think they are helping but they make me feel bad all over again, they just remind me that I dont have many friends, i dont get out enough etc.. It's true, a lot of people are very ignorant about depression and dont know how to react to someone that is depressed and dont realize what they say is doing more harm than good.

That's a good point, once you realise that you're ill it helps a hell of a lot.

I know exactly what you mean. There are no more painful words in the English language than "cheer up." It's hard, you just know the people that say those things have never seriously thought of suicide or anything like that. They can't understand how much relief you can get from cutting yourself, they just think you want attention or something.

Perhaps it makes them feel comfortable; perhaps they reach for this attitude to stop them from having to think.

One of the phrases I always challenge is, "Oh, it's just a cry for help." Said in response to news of someone's self-harm (actual or attempted), and said with body language and vocal tone that convey, "No-one needs to pay any attention to it."

I don't hear it so often now (perhaps people know my attitude) but if I do, I respond by asking something like: if you're walking down the street, and see smoke pouring out from a building, and hear someone inside shouting and screaming; or if you're walking past the lake, and see someone thrashing about in the water frantically waving, do you say, "Oh, it's just a cry for help," shrug your shoulders, and walk on?

How can anything be *just* a cry for help?

Didn't express myself well, Alli. A cry for help it may be, conscious or unconscious; or it may not be. It may instead be the only coping mechanism they can come up with at the time: see Happydude's post.

What gets me is the way some people, once they've made up *their* mind that something someone's done is a cry for help, immediately move on to to dismiss that "cry for help" as *just* a cry for help, shrug their shoulders, have a smirk at the poor silly girl/boy, think no more about it. A cry for help, if that's what they've decided it is, deserves a more serious response than that!

I agree, that should be respected. We live in an age when people's private pain is turned into mass-market entertainment: those witless, confrontational studio talk shows that trade on the humiliation of their "guests" remind me of bear-baiting, or the afternoon excursions the wealthy once used to make to see the inmates in Bedlam. In such an age as ours, believing out loud in people's right to privacy and dignity invites derision or at least suspicion ("What's s/he got to hide?").

But there are people who prefer "Daria" to daytime humiliation-fests, so it can't be that bad a world (This remark is a not just an attempt to show I'm on topic <g>). My view: hope outweighs angst, in the long run.

Yeah, noone would cry for help if they didn't need it.

That's sort-of what I meant, yeah. It's like, if someone finds out you've been cutting yourself, they'll laugh or go "That is so gross, you're really weird," when both of those reactions are no doubt going to make you go home and cut yourself some more, or worse, just bottle up whatever feelings you're having and try to carry on, which will probably lead to some kind of nervous breakdown in the long run.

Actually, I find that sort of show rather interesting to watch. Not to look at all the 'fuck-ups' but to look at the people they live around, their friends, families, etc. Most of the time it's painfully obvious why the 'guest' has turned out the way they have. I watch the shows to laugh at the 'normal' people!

I've been working on the Tele now for a few weeks, and, I've got to say, it's a very sweet instrument, and very therapeutic as well after a long day. I should've done this years ago. But, anyway, I can see what you mean about music being important to you. It's only about as important to me as, oh, say, breathing or eating. A lot of people are quick to put down guitars made overseas, my Stratocaster is from Japan and I find it better than a lot of the american made Strat's. Fender Japan makes a good guitar, the reissues being the best. Your right you got a good deal, I'm guessing it was about $600-$700 brand new. I also find the Japanese pickups a bit weak and im thinking about getting some Texas Specials or something with more of a vintage sound. Those will set me back a little, so im going to wait. IMHO It's worth the money to upgrade from a no-name guitar especially since I spent about 7 or 8 years playing a piece of plywood.

It's kinda strange; I'm quite a musical person (I'm good at math, which apparently helps) but noone suggested I take GCSE in music. I guess that's 'cos I can't read music at all. Or because I tell everyone how Mudhoney are better than the Beatles and talk incessantly about all these unheard-of bands and go on about how the Pixies are the most influencial band ever... this is probably another reason people think I'm mad; such views on music are considered rather unorthodox around here ('here' being a small town in south-east England where people can say "Who the hell is Kurt Cobain?" and be completely serious).

I can see why that would be scary. I have a similar problem with my eyes, one eye sees everything a slightly different colour. That doesn't bother me though. I told someone once, I wouldn't mind too much if I went blind, but I'd kill myself if I went deaf. They thought I was mad. More so than they did before, that is.

I found the drums harder than the piano because you not only need both arms but both feet to play a drum set properly, I couldn't cut it. The piano was tricky because of the concentration and coordination. On top of that you need to know how to read music written in both treble and bass clef. Treble clef was ok for me, the bass clef was the one that gave me trouble. The guitar seemed much more natural to me. I still cant sing and play guitar at the same time (and all of god's creatures breath a sigh of relief). BTW check out Moog synthesisers. They're monophonic, meaning you can only play one note at a time, no chords, you only need one finger to play it.

Try being a Pulp fan in America. "Pulp who?"

I'm a bit backwards, I didn't start listening to the Pixies until well after they had broken up and Kim and Frank were off doing new things. I was blown away by the Breeders' "Divine Hammer" and "Canonball" and Frank Black's "Los Angeles" and "Hang on to Your Ego" then a friend let me borow his Pixies CD's, I've been a fan ever since. BTW im not sure if your familiar with the work of Steve Albini, He produced many great albums like; the Pixies Doolittle, Nirvana's In Utero, Belly's Pod (another great band), Pigface's Gub and many others. He's also the singer/guitarist for the 80's punk band Big Black, I'd recomend the album Pigpile (a live CD from the last show did after they broke up) He is currently in a band named Shellac, I havent heard it yet. If I went out and got every album I've been meaning to buy I'd be in debt for years.

I never had too much difficulty with that, so long as it's just straight forward rhythm playing. I can't play lead and sing. No, make that: I can't play lead, period.

I can imagine! I went into this store to buy this record by Cay (then-unsigned iindie band fronted by "the female Kurt Cobain" according to a local radio station) and I went to order it, and you should have seen the look I got from the cashier! It was like, *blank stare*

Me too. That's probably because I would have been, what? eight years old when they broke up, so I never heard them until Debaser was rereleased last September. Irony of ironies, I heard it on MTV, the _worst_ place you can go for good alternative music. Bringing this post back on topic, I actually first heard it after MTV screwed up an episode of Daria.

I love his stuff. But he's a sexist twat, IMHO. I think you mean Surfer Rosa, by the way.

I've looked for Big Black stuff in both of the two tiny record stores that exist within a ten mile radius of my house, but (surprise surprise) I couldn't find anything. I'll probably look next time I go up to London, which won't be 'til well after Christmas. :(

Thankfully there is tablature. Even to this day I can't sight read notation. Usually when I try to learn a song from sheet music I convert it into tablature. Even when I do that I start out OK but pretty soon I lose focus and all the lines and dots merge together or start moving around and im back to counting lines and spaces. Ususally I'll find something else to do until I'm ready to go back to it. At least on the piano there is only one middle C, the guitar has 5 differnt ways to play the middle C (B string first fret,G 5th fret,d 10th fret,A 14th fret, and E 20th fret) as a result there can be dozens of ways to play a simple chord. some of the greatest guitarists in the world could'nt read a note, they just played what sounded good. They did'nt know they were playing a Pentatonic Minor this or a Harmonic Major that, they simply found a series of notes that sounded good and played until there fingers bleed (sometimes literally).

We have the beginings of a good band on this newsgroup, your rhythm guitar, my lead, Kyle on the bass or drums or piano or xylophone. Hey we could do Doors covers! :) or we could get Paperpusher to bring his million dollar Tele' for a 3rd guitarist and do Skynard covers (my greatest shame is knowing the opening chords to Freebird)

If you ever get a chance, listen to a song by Jimi Hendrix called "Little Wing" the opening is a very intricate lead but once he starts to sing he starts playing the lead and rhythm at the same time. I will never understand how he could play lead, rhythm and sing at the same time. It took me a week just to learn to play the first 32 seconds of that damn song. The man was a freak of nature (but in a good way).

I got the same reaction a few years ago when I went to buy Bjork's album Debut. they laughed at me too "What's a bork?"

120 minutes used to be good, I wonder what happened? I saw a Kraftwerk video on MTV once, I wonder who slid that one by?

oops, your right, my bad. He also produced the Breeders' Pod, not Belly.

www.cdnow.com has some of there albums, I dont know how much extra they charge for shippng it across the pond.

I can't really say for sure, but I do know that the great blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan played lead and rhythm at the same time by slamming into all the strings as he played his riffs. Essentially, he muted all other strings but the one he was playing on at the time, but strummed the whole guitar. I have a feeling Stevie got that from Jimi, since he was one of his biggest fans/followers. By the way, Stevie does an awesome rendition of Little Wing. No vocals, which doesn't matter, not with such a cool song.

I agree with him. Interestingly enough, all of my fave guitar players do both lead and rhythm. Not necessarily at the same time though... :)

Do you have the video of the two concerts he did on Austin City Limits? Whoever taped him was brilliant. He got just the right mix of Stevie and the band in, but then would get some shots of Stevie's hands and some closeups of him playing. Of course, its all too fast to figure it out by that..unless you have a way to slow the tape down. :)

Jimmie Vaughan, Stevie's brother, is also a great player. Seen him live once.

By the way, here are my favorite bands...

Subdivisions by Rush

Sprawling on the fringes of the city In geometric order An insulated border In between the bright lights and the far unlit unknown

Growing up it all seems so one-sided Opinions all provided The future predecided Detached and subdivided In the mass production zone

Nowhere is the dreamer Or the misfit so alone

Subdivisions- In the high school halls In the shopping malls Conform or be cast out Subdivisions- In the basement bars In the backs of cars Be cool or be cast out Any escape might help to smooth The unattractive truth But the suburbs have no charms to soothe The restless dreams of youth

Drawn like moths we drift into the city The timeless old attraction Cruising for the action Lit up like a firefly Just to feel the living night

Some will sell their dreams for small desires Or lose the race to rats Get caught in ticking traps And start to dream of somewhere To relax their restless flight

Somewhere out of a memory Of lighted streets on quiet nights...

The only problem you may possibly have is with the electronics or the tuners, you wont have to worry about that for a few years unless you really abuse them.

As far as the quality of your playing, practice practice practice. You obviously have the desire and dedication needed to improve your skills. I've seen too many people start playing, learn a few songs, get bored and never play again. Sometimes you have to listen to yourself play, really listen, then you'll realise your much better than you were a week/month/year ago. If you really want to bug your neighbors with your new toys, let me know, I'll tell you about distortion and the fine art of feedback. :)

Sorry about that, I could'nt resist.

Aah, now this sounds interesting. I 'tested' the guitar after getting it home (ie, spent several hours fiddling with the amp settings and making a god-awful noise) but I didn't quite have the nerve to try playing feedback for too long as that would have resulted in instant confiscation of the guitar, but I played around with the distortion until I was sure I'd shattered all the windows within the immediate vicinity of my house.

You should keep that as your sig, you know. Although noone will get it after the next time I change my sig. But nevermind.

They do cut bits out. When they aired The Invitation, they cut out part of the scene where Daria tells Jane about Brittany's party. It sounded really odd.

And again!

And where the HELL is "University of Middlesex"? All the signs, books, letters, et al say "Middlesex University".

Just found a message on my answering machine from my local Virgin (Perhaps I ought to write, "From a member of staff at my local branch of Virgin Retail"?) to say, "The video you ordered on Monday has arrived."

Unfortunately she didn't say which of the two videos I ordered on Monday it is. Jacques Tati's _Jour de Fete_, or MTV's _Daria One_?

Will I sleep tonight? <g>
