Some thoughts on "Jane's Addition"

First of all, why the hell does the MTV website say the episodes name is "Jane's Addiction? Do the have some flunkies working on that web site or what?

I found this episode to be kind of....angry (for lack of a better word). Daria and Jane were angry at each other and then they were both angry at Trent. Daria didn't come off to well in this one, but I kind of understand her side. And Jane's. Like "Through a Lense, Darkly" this episode reminds me of stuff that I went through. Not exactly the same but similar.

This episode seemed pretty focused on Jane and Daria. We don't even see Helen, Jake or Quinn or most of the regulars. This one didn't have too many funny parts (at least "Depth Takes a Holiday" was laughable) and it isn't going to be one of my favorites. But it was a pretty good episode for what it was worth. Let's just hope this is as serious a story line as it's gonna get.

And then there's the kiss. Seemed a little tacked on but it happened and we'll have to go with it. Daria's attitude around Trent seemed to change. Maybe she really did get over him. Oh well.

Yes. A lot of things came to a head.

What she did was immature and wrong ... and in character. This episode showed that both Trent and Daria have some growing to do.

It was more dramatic than comedic. But it was very, VERY effectively dramatic, and well written.

That was a "goodbye" kiss. It occurs after Daria tells Trent (implicitly) that she can't be involved with him because he's irresponsible. It's the sort of kiss a man gives a woman who's rejected him but whom he cares about and hopes the best for, and whom he may want someday to try again with.

She still really likes him, she just doesn't think it would be a good idea anymore.

I remember after Empire that there was a lot of discussion about Luke turning to the Dark Side like Anakin before him. And there had been a comment in either Empire or New Hope that "A Jedi does not crave revenge." So there was much speculation that the sixth episode would be another one steeped in tragedy, with Luke killing Vader/Anakin and irrevokably going to the Dark Side, with the "other" new hope that the shade of Obi Wan mentioning being the one who finally breaks the back of the Empire in episodes 7-9.

However, we all know that wasn't going to be the case. Instead of Luke turning, Vader actually was the one who turned in the end. They couldn't reveal that...it would spoil the movie. Hence the ruse of the title.

"Jane's Addiction" suggests her new romantic interest would be bad for her.

"Jane's Addition" has no such baggage.

I think we'll be seeing more of Tom in S4, and I think we will be seeing Trent become Daria's second good friend, not her crush interest.

This has set up Season 4 as surely as "The Misery Chick" set up Season 2.

Agreed... esp. since Glenn has been keeping a tab on the site - if it was that big of a 'mistake' he would have had it corrected. :)

In fact, there was _nothing_ on the MTV site which suggested that JA wouldn't be a rehash of See Jane Run... the clip chosen was very reminiscent of the one with Jane, Evan, and Daria (at Pizza King)

As we know now, the reality was quite different. :)

Yup... actually, seeing that you didn't toot your own horn on this one, wouldn't this be a great lead-in to something like "Trent's Adventures in La-La Land"? Trent is gonna feel pretty bad about turning his back on Janey (and Daria) and decides to pack up and go. (He's also getting a bit annoyed at the rest of MS, I'm sure - unless he is just being completely oblivious... which I don't think is the case. :) ) In Trent's Adventures he _did_ learn to keep a schedule etc. and became the sorta person Daria _could_ get together with.

(And I'd be surpised if Tom _didn't_ come back. And I'm sure we'll learn a lot more about him - we don't know him too well yet... and neither does Jane. We know he's a Good Guy, but there are always details...)

I thought about this on #Daria+ a bit... TMC had to have played a dual role - it was quite possible when Glenn was writing it that S2 may NOT have been assured, and "(Daria,) you're not the misery chick" would have been a fitting _series_ finale.

Now, WWIH on the other hand seemed to be more of a season lead-in... we saw that OH really did have hope for the future, and we started to see a few dents in her armor... a theme which prevailed through much of S3 :)

All in all, JA's a darn good season starter, which also doubled as a season ender.

I forgot about those annoyed glares he was giving Jesse & the rest at the Zen. The whole future of Mystic Spiral is coming into question...and Trent was having fun going solo on the MIDI contraption (Where'd he get the money for one of those? I'm jealous.). This episode did have its share of cliffhangers after all...

I agree.(I'm sure Trent isn't oblivious after the proof in this season.... but let me not bring up the question that has been beaten to a pulp again.) I too forgot about those glares but from Trent's facial expressions in this episode and other ones... like "speedtrapped" for example... it might be that Trent's getting tired of MS... and if he is.. from what we've seen of the band together.. who would blame him ?

His unreliability means that these are the best people he could get to follow him ... and they are not the brightest bulbs in the store. We can apparently always count on 1 good, dramatic episode per year, this ep. continues the trend of a very solid season finale.

More like "goodbye...for now" as you say above, they still care for each other and he may want to try again someday. He's saying "i'm sorry I let you down" in both meanings of the conversation as he realizes what has happened, maybe his feelings are finally aroused, and this will turn him onto the right path of responsibility, if he does, Daria will try it again, remember, the situation was to be addressed, NOT resolved this season, season 4 may bring a changed, more responsible Trent, and if it does, the crush/relationship should return, however, if nothing changes at the start of season 4, then we can call the relationship dead.

I saw this, too. As you said elsewhere, the situations were reversed. Daria was calm around Trent, and he was a bit nervous around her. Right now the attitude is "lets be friends" if Trent changes his attitude on responsibilty, the relationship will escalate again, if not its over, because Daria has given him many chances to prove himself and as of yet, he hasn't.

Yes. He has to mature for Daria to accept him. Daria strikes me as a very faithful person, and if she got involved with him at his current level of irresponsibility he would wind up taking advantage of her, even if he didn't mean to.
