Something to think about

Wraith tends to think that the forthcoming season will be popped (as in popularity for profit) out a lot more than even last season was. They have the tools and their petty reasons for doing so. My post to his board dared fans to think what would happen if the "owners" (read: animators and production co., apart -- if indeed apart -- from MTV) moved the show elsewhere in the TW sphere. Wraith preferred ComedyCentral to my original Nickelodeon suggestion. At ComedyCentral, there is a perceived link UP to the pay channels, particularly the HBOs. Maybe someone should suggest it go there. HBO, while not altogether a haven for the smart animator and his edge or fringe product, is far better at narrowcasting by way of scheduling (the ink B&B has had in its history on the air proves MTV gains scruples only when admen threaten) than their cohorts can afford to be. The link from CC to the pays is proven by the revenue returns CC got, and continues to get, which, in the words of Steve White in a particular Robert Wuhl film, make them "lose to the Weather Channel."

Even at that level, the threat of popularisation for profit is greater. Maybe a pit-stop (half a season, then a teaser PM bloc from HBO to get people who are truly committed to follow it up) at Comedy Central is a good idea, but I wouldn't wish a perment home there on anyone connected with "Daria." For one thing, early consumer burnout is the warp and the weft of programming technique at CC: they buy a show, then run eps for a whole Sat- or Sunday, so when it shifts to its so-called "regularly scheduled" slot, you've seen them all already.

That's not for our girl Daria, now, izzit?!

Now that I've had a chance to think about it, "South Park" will probably take the HBO route first. Remember folks, so long as Terry Rakolta and Donald Wildmon are still alive and kicking, truly creative TV with any ties to real-life is merely a pipedream.
