I'll be doing one of my twice a year NY shopping thangs next week and wondered if any US Darians know of any shops in Manhattan that sell old magazines. I'm desperate to complete my collection of old skool Sassy mags and e-bay gives me a migraine. Also is it really true that there's a MTV merchandise shop at the bottom of the Viacom Tower that sells a load of Daria stuff or have the voices been lying to me again? Anywhere else that I really should see apart from Bloomingdales, Urban Outfitters and that big Barnes And Noble on Union Square?

Um, well, there's always the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Guggenheim as well. (Although the Met is my favorite of all museums.) If you want to look like a tourist, though, you should go to Times Square and look at all of the big tacky stores that Disney & Co. have built where all of the porn shops used to be. Hm... you should also go to either the Carnegie Deli or the Second Avenue Deli, too. Both are good (although I prefer the Second Avenue Deli.) There are plenty of Tall Things to Climb-- The World Trade Center, or Empire State Bldg., or maybe a trip to the Statue of Liberty. Or, if you're just looking for sheer tacky, there's always the Trump Tower. ;-)
Oh, yeah, there's nothing like the smell of the Port Authority Bus Terminal in the Summer! ;-)

And as for old magazines, check out the music stores in the Village (Greenwich to non-New Yorkers) around 8th Street and Bleecker (by NYU) sometimes there is a treasure trove of old stuff. I generally hit the area when I need to buy British imports, but as you're from the UK (from you e-mail address) that won't be necessary for you.

I think she had over 200 pairs of shoes in her shoe collection. All this during a time when the Philippines were particularly hard hit economics wise. Oh yes, and I think the old Nancy Reagan would've spent that much too. Remember how much she paid for the inaugural gown in 1985? Something like $20,000? And she was known for her extravagant taste in clothes too, right?

i don't think i have that much.. i got �50 for getting good gcse results, and that's enough for a pair of shoes, and i'm ok with that. although i think i'll stick with last year's scabby boots and save the �50 for something else.
Thanks for the advice. Y'know I was just going to soak up the culture for once, instead of shopping all day but when I found out about the tax-free shopping last week I came over all Quinn-like! But I feel there's a Quinn-side to us all, she said contentiously.
Yeah, there's a Quinn-side to us all...although when I get Quinn-like it's over things like goodies for my computer collection. My idea of shopper's paradise would be a store stocked like Fry's Electronics or CompUSA but staffed with folks like those who work at Sam Ash Music in Canoga Park.
I get Quinn-like when I walk into a REALLY GOOD music store (like Borders or a local independent) and find myself in a sea of CDs that I would LOVE to get but I haven't the money for. It's kinda tough though as I love a lot of obscure pieces of music that can be hard to find or that's located in a compliation I wouldn't want to spend the money for (happened to me recently with Icicle Works' "Whisper to a Scream"...found it on this one compilation at Circuit City that was filled with all these hackneyed '80s songs that I could very well turn on the radio to listen to, then today I had a little free time so I drove to a Sam Goody and found the same song on a compilation with slightly better company [it's nice now being able to listen to "Wouldn't it Be Good" by Nik Kershaw and "Hold Me Now" by the Thompson Twins whenever I wanted to, and ever since I learned my Barry likes Frankie Goes to Hollywood I've not had a problem with them so it's good to have "Relax" on the compilation too, although I would've liked "Two Tribes" MUCH more]). Sometimes I end up special ordering, though, as I've done for Japan's CDs. Darn, which reminds me, I need to upgrade my Duran Duran collection. Eight of their albums that I have I have exclusively on cassette format, which means I'm going to have to get them in CD format too.
LOL, you see? I could go on and on and on with this. (um, MAJOR hint time...if you wanna be my saving grace you could give me an early Christmas present...how about Roxy Music's best-of?...or a Depeche Mode early videos collection...or a Japan music video collection...*hint* LOL)
I usually hate it, except when I see I NEED to go clothes shopping (e.g., recently I found I was in serious need of some short sleeved blouses so I went and got them). Then I'll go to the cheaper places like Montgomery Ward or the bargain racks at Lerner. Would never DREAM of going to places like Dillards or Foley's. (or Cashman's if I ever found myself in Lawndale)
Wow, I love to shop... it doesn't matter what for... If I go into a department store for a tube of toothpaste, it's a pretty good bet that I'll be in there for a couple of hours... I don't have to even buy anything... I just like to walk around and look at everything... My sister's the same way; when we hit the stores we have the best times... My brother, on the other hand, thinks if you go there for toothpaste, then you get the toothpaste and leave... but every guy I've ever known is like that... with the exception of my father... get him into a Home Depo or a warehouse place and he'll out walk us every time.

I can out-shop you where books are concerned. Get me in a book store and I can quite happily spend hours there, walking out with as many books as I can physically carry. Especially a used book store, with lots of cheap out-of-print books <sighs dreamily> :)
Used book stores rule! As do used CD stores-- that's the trick, Diane. Used CDs... I found a great compilation of Japanese remixes of B-52s stuff for $4, and a good imported Joy Division CD for $14. (Considering it'd usually go for $25, even if you could find it.)
My big weaknesses, though, are art and computer books. Both are significant hits in the wallet. Ouch!
Oh, man... all of the above. And Goodwill. You'd be amazed at the wacky stuff people give away. *found an awesome riding jacket at St. Vincent-DePaul the other day* If I had any money, that's where it'd all go.

Ah yess-- we have a cool one of those downtown. I found a Spike Milligan book for $1.50 (and didn't have to order it from some far off place! Woo hoo!) ... all sortsa fun stuff... of course I try to limit books I actually buy new at Barnes and Noble because I can get them 40% off if my mom orders them (I love library connections.)
Goodwill rules! The trick is to get my mom to take my to the Goodwill on Division where they have the vintage clothing and lots of cool stuff. Then I don't have to spend money. Woo hoo.

I was once, as a student, walking through a town I won't name with a chap (ditto) who'd appeared, when he'd arrived at college, to be making sure people noticed that his clothes were in Gieves & Hawkes suit carriers (top drawer Saville Row outfitters). I asked if he minded if we called in at my tailor's. <very posh upper-class English accent> "I'd be delighted, old man. Might give him some business." </vpucEa> So I turned into Oxfam... (Charity shop selling, cheaply, donated clothing)
I do regularly go to used record stores to find any great bargains...I was extremely saddened to see my favorite local used record store, Apple Records, go out of business in 1997 (it's where I'd gotten at least four of my Duran Duran albums and currently still 1/2 of my music collection), because you could find some *excellent* deals there. Now I rely on this chain called Half Price Books & Records, which has quite an assortment of tapes and CDs at a good price, as well as CD Exchange, which has even better prices on CDs (picked up "Rio" on CD finally for $5 with a trade-in and a Japan CD for $8). btw -- I don't know if you understood me or not, but I was talking about Japan the *band*, not any Japanese imports. I would like some Duran Duran Japanese imports (e.g. "Medazzaland" and "The Wedding Album"), but I'd like to build my Japan collection first. Oh yeah, and I just recently got "Gentlemen Take Polaroids" for $11 at a local independent called Hogwild Records. Usually you don't find Japan's stuff for that amount of money, even if you can possibly find it at Borders (I saw a placard with "Japan" written on it and I know they sell David Sylvian and Jansen/Karn).
