Yes finally, Channel Five have shown the Lawndale Files, which I felt was very silly. Not silly in the same way Depth Takes A Holiday was silly, but silly nonetheless. Is it really possible that Helen would not know that the term "alien" can mean "extra-terrestrial" as well as "foreign"? In other news today, I didn't find any Daria merchandise in Forbidden Planet or Virgin, but I nevertheless managed to spend a silly amount of money acquiring the complete video set of 3x3 Eyes. I became obsessed with it in recent weeks after rediscovering an old tape of the first episode, and had dim recollections from when it was shown on Channel Four a few years back of the rest of the story being even more impossibly strange than the initial premise of a cute 16-going-on- 300 year old girl having a split personality in which she turns into an invincible triclops at random intervals. Meanwhile, apparently only 200 people were murdered in East Timor yesterday, so I guess the slaughter is tapering off now that the UN forces are en route for the island. Only a couple of days left if you're an Indonesian soldier who wants to indulge in some senseless violence!

i have pretty much given up on capitals. i wasn't drunk when i wrote that, but i was later... i am still recovering from a massive hangover at present.. i had to go to school, semi-drunk. this was not helped by the fact that i went home at lunchtime to try the "hair of the dog" treatment (ie, more alcohol) and went back for the remaining two lessons.
Um, even though I'm massively puritanical and completely frown on anyone getting drunk unless there's a *very* good reason behind it (and with that I'm talking about leading a *very* adult existence as someone who is at least 25 and even then it should only be once a week), I don't think alcohol is *quite* that bad. I'm currently not eagerly awaiting the moment when I can drink legally, but I wouldn't go saying stuff about that.
(p.s.: Wanna know how puritanical I am? *VERY*...Jordan'd know...he'll vouch for me.)

You know, the censors wouldn't let Barbara Eden show her navel on TV--too racy.

Here's a test: if after you sober up the problem is still there, then what have you accomplished by getting drunk? And if the problem is gone, then why bother getting drunk over such an insignificant problem?
Maybe it's just me. I just can't bear being out of control. Alcohol would only impair that.
One note: alcohol causes wrinkles.
Of course it's your life, your choice. That's one of the pleasures of being an autonomous human being.

Well that's obviously untrue. I think you're great.
Unless you take something of actual strength like Vicodin (my best friend!) or Aleve, or in some cases Advil. After taking two of the listed above one could experience relief from tough pain for up to 24 hours. Trust me on this one. Especially Vicodin. Ask for it by name.
I once had dental surgery where the dentist administered laughing gas...he said the effect would be similar to being drunk...I didn't find the experience fun at all, in fact I was quite scared and wanted the whole ordeal to be over with. After that experience I'm planning on having only one wine cooler at my 21st birthday celebration, and whenever I do drink I'll probably have one alcoholic beverage, just in an attempt to not get drunk.

In fact, Mom looks more like a 40 year old and is often mistaken for such. Just telling you....
I don't know what he himself was talking about, but I do derive a great deal of pleasure from these things:
(a) going online (duh) (b) listening to music (guess which artist I most listen to) (c) watching certain shows (guess which show I most watch) (d) driving (when I'm relaxed and driving, I can drive at or below the speed limit without me even trying) (e) daydreaming (f) going into Barnes & Noble and browsing through
Boring? Maybe. Things *I* deem as pleasurable? *Definitely*.
Now, everyone hop into the truck...we're going to Barnes and Noble and I've got plenty of Duran Duran tapes for us to sing along to! After we get home we can all tune into hours of "Daria"! ...Huh? Sorry, I was daydreaming.... :)
I once had the same thing. I wasn't scared, cause I trusted the dentist, but the effect was weird, not really like being tipsy or drunk at all. Under laughing gas EVERYTHING is funny ... I remember feeling the drill sink right into my tooth root and spray enamel chips up into my nose and being tremendously amused at the knowledge that I was smelling my own shredded tooth ... a thought that normally would have horrified me.

I have to give Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen analgesia to patients every so often. I try to be honest. I tell them "Your (kidney stone, fracture, whatever...) is still going to hurt, but you won't care." I think that about covers it.
At my 21st b-day I only had one drink as well, only because my friends wouldn't let me go without it. One night during one of my bowling leagues I think I had 2 beers and I couldn't walk straight to the foul line for the rest of the night, I have a very low tolerance as well.
Only time I got bad was when I went camping with my cousin and some of our friends in the Adirondacks at my cousins friends campsite Labor Day, 1997. I think I had a six-pack of beer(some may say six, wow, but most people would say THATS ALL IT TOOK!?) and was totally gone for the night. Thank God my cousin drove us back to our campsite, I'd have never found it, at least I think she did, the last thing I remember was watching the fire before waking up at camp the next morning totally sore with the headache, nausea, and the praying to the porcelian god. Ever since then I've never had more than one drink at a sitting. After that I could never see the fun in drinking just to get drunk. Anyone can do what they want, when they want to, I won't stop them, but count me out on the drinking or for that matter smoking as well, just thinking about overdoing it with either, makes me feel Blecch and Ick. Smoked 1 cig. got very sick never tried it again.
He who rarely drinks, never smokes, never does any drugs and usually is still always like he's high on something,
Cool, then I can loosen up. I didn't drink on my 21st because I have no freinds (kidding). Actually, I was a bit under the weather that day, so i only got a buzz off the Nyquil I used to get to sleep that night.
The worst I ever got was at my senior picnic back in May. Someone got a beer truck (a truck filled with beer) that was supposed to last for four hours but only lasted for about three (it ran out at about 3PM). I can usually drink about half a case of beer before succumbing to the extremes of drunkenness but that day was different. After the 'picnic' (which didn't involve any real food, just beer), I had to get home using public transit, which is what I usually did at the time, but was for some reason more interesting that day (excuse me sir <hiccup> may I have one of those green slips of paper so I can continue my journey from 69th street?).
I knew some really weird people that thought of Nyquil as a mixer. They were real fun to watch at parties.

I've made it a point never to get completely blotto after what a couple of friends and myself did to one of our friends at a HS grad party. The guy drank until he passed out. We stripped him naked, except for shoes and socks, cut his jeans off at the knees and attached them to his legs with rubber bands. Then we put him in a trenchcoat and stuck him on a bus for LA with nothing but two dimes in the pockets.
Who did he call to pick him up? Yup, me. It's the only reason I'm alive today.

Interestingly the figures are not much lower for married people. I just don't remember in which country this survey was conducted. Judged by the number of breast deteriorations (no, I don't mean augmentation), US women may well have a less natural relationship with their own bodies. But I'm sure the 90% is a universal constant. Plasmo (though I have a couple of episodes on tape somewhere. Plasmo is a pink alien with an over-cute outlook on life. His friends are always trying to corrupt him but his irredeemable niceness always floors them.)
A cartoon whose name I forget that's a Star Trek parody, the captain (Captain Freddie Starr?) is an pompous egotistical Englishman who does very little himself apart from insisting on taking all the credit for his crew's achievements. Starship crews were assigned by birthday, so everyone on the ship has the same birthday... (but only the captain's is celebrated, IIRC.)
Reboot - one of the best cartoon series ever, I loved their clever use of computer terminology, and their spoofs of X-Files, James Bond, Transformers, etc were excellent, but even better was the chilling episode about the Medusa Virus (that turned everyone but Hex to stone), also the one about the mystery creature that burst out of Hex's mirror one day and turned her from being a mere vicious evil sadistic witch who had no redeeming features, into a thing of absolute malevolence. Yes, it was the dreaded Web Creature... lock up your browsers, something wicked this way comes...
I'm sure there are a lot of other cartoons I miss, but I can't think of them right now. In a few weeks Daria will be one of them...
Uh... (looks uneasily throughout the crowd) ...I don't care for cartoons, all of them could get cancelled and the only one I'd weep for is "Daria". And *maybe* "Downtown" (I'm at that stage where I think I might become a fan but I'm not sure).
I do miss a heck of a lot of shows that I've not gotten to watch in reruns for a LONG time though...
"Family Ties" "The Facts of Life" "The Cosby Show" "Diff'rent Strokes" "Silver Spoons" "Knight Rider" "The Golden Girls" "Webster" "Mr Belvedere" "Charles in Charge" "Night Court" "MacGuyver" "Airwolf"
...sigh, the '80s were fantastic (feeling nostalgic)....
I have just realized that the show I miss the most are "the Simpsons". I used to watch them every day but a few weeks ago Pro7 has replaced them with "Roseanne". I can only hope that this means that they will buy some new episodes of the Simpsons soon. You know, we are several seasons behind the US. At some point Pro7 just stopped airing new episodes and put the old seasons on endless-daily-rerun (in no particular order as it seems, I think they just repeated the episodes with the best ratings). Anyway, even though I have seen many episodes 3 times now I'd still rewatch them every time. There are only a handful of episodes that I don't like. MSB

I have some lyrics that match this very conversation:
I had a problem they said they could solve Soon I won't speak I have no words left in me I dream in pictures, but the sound is muted I have no way to understand what they say Into Medazzaland People are starting to talk, But I don't hear them anymore Now I can speak, but I'm still unable to think Do they really know what's wrong? What are they saying about me? I can feel the scapel on my skin The time has come from them to begin I'm sinking deeper and deeper I'm in Medazzaland
I can feel the scalpel on my skin, It's cutting in deeper and deeper I'm in Medazzaland, Oh Medazzaland

Oh yeah, and if anyone's ever gone under with Midazolin, that's the inspiration for this song.

you know what's worse though? NOT having dental work. Like say for example when you were a kid you had these caps put on your teeth. Then, at some point they fell off. Now everytime you eat something real cold or sweet or hot or hard or...(you get the idea) you get some excrusioating pain. My advice. Get parents that will pay for your dental work, and live with them for as long as you can.

Was she small? I've heard vegan children are often smaller due to not being able to eat sufficient quantities of food to offset the lower calorific value of vegetables compared to animal produce. I don't know if this is true though.
Yes, she was kinda small. Both in height and figure. But she became vegan after I met her (and has stuck with it through these first 3 years), and she wasn't much bigger before.

hahahaha, "characters"? i found them completely unbelievable. you have all these *good* poor people and these *bad* rich people, but there are two or three *good* rich people, and one of the *good* poor people runs off with one of the *good* rich people, but then there's this horrible tragedy and the *good* poor bloke dies. they might as well have given them black and white hats, to make it even easier for the idiotic hordes of Leonardo di caprio fans to distinguish between the *good* people and the *bad* people.
You see, you know you're a true Texan of Mexican heritage when you can read something like this and say, "hm, I'm still eating meat and *lots* of it!" No way are you going to get me to be vegetarian.

Hey, you get the same kinds of pains I do. That's why I love Advil to death...they usually help me out when I have a headache...and Vicodin...they usually help me out with my other pains.

I know a lot of people who experience these symptoms. They seem to be considered pandemic around these parts. Have you considered the possibility of a sinus infection? Sensitivity to barometric changes, your face (cheekbones, eyebrows, temples, teeth) feels like it's going to explode? Most doctors are idiots and don't know how to treat them but if it is indeed a sinus infection there are a few good sinus men/sinus persons around who can handle it--or tell you if it isn't sinusitis. Opinion seems to be split on whether it's better to see an ENT specialist or an allergist. You might have to shop around 'til you find one who isn't an idiot. Sinusitis is easier to fix than a brain tumor.
I've noticed that people who might be characterized as "brains" tend to have more trouble with sinusitis. Maybe it's because they spend more time indoors. It helps to get outside once in a while.
lol. don't you think it might be a good idea to see a doctor, seeing as how if you've got a brain tumour you're going to need something done? i went to the doctor about my headaches. she said it was because i was too tense. i suppose there's not much that can be done about that, as it's damn near impossible to *un-tense* yourself.
btw sex is supposed to cure headaches.. lol.
ahh, my dad has that.. i get it from time to time. that sucks, i'm sorry for you. :(
Massages are good for that. I think some sports centres etc have masseurs, not that you'd go anywhere near such a place. They ought to have laziness centres for people like us, with masseurs and hot tubs etc on hand, along with unhealthy refreshments like ice cream and absinthe.
Yeah, sex and headaches are mutually exclusive, it's just a question of which arrives first.
Geez, and I thought I had bad headaches... I used to go through bottles of ibuprofin each week... I got holes in my stomach from it... I used to wake up every now and then thinking something was weird (or weirder then normal, anyway) and hours later I would realize that the weird thing was I did not have a headache... I still get migraines rather often (thanks to the cop tht hit my car last year) but other than that I don't even notice the headaches too much on a normal, day to day basis... I've leaned to live around them or my pain tolerance has risen, or both... I did get a brain scan, btw... I have a perfectly normal, slightly dented, juicy brain, slightly larger on one side... Of course, I do have to avoid zombies now...

Homecoming is another of those words that ought to go into a USA/Commonwealth cultural translation guide. I recall the first time I encountered it was on Twin Peaks, were Laura Palmer was described as the "homecoming queen". I remember puzzling inconclusively over this, as the term "homecoming" seemed to imply she must have been away somewhere and had now come back again, so I assumed at first she was a student who had been away at university, but as the story progressed it became evident she'd been in Twin Peaks all along! It was only years afterwards that I finally found out what a homecoming queen was.

Males take more risks. They have less worries, especially about (1) unwanted sex (they can't get pregnant and the male culture treats it as no big deal), (2) harming their fetuses (they can't carry any), and (3) risk in general (it's a macho thing).

Are those equivalent though? Fancying someone implies sexual interest (or romantic interest at least) rather than just liking someone.
Are Americans familiar with the colloquial use of the word "fit", as in "she's fit"? It's a northern expression I think, which means sexually attractive.
Well, "like" in that sense is based in the pubescent avoidance of any actual commital to having feelings, lest you might get rejected. It led to such crazy 13 year old conversations as "Do you like him? Or do you *like* like him?".
I don't think I've heard of fit in that sense. Fit usually means in good physical shape.

As it goes, I'm already trying to get over being isolated from my fellow drunkies. Being a college student, I have way too many friends who indulge in alcohol. It's rather difficult being the only one who doesn't drink and doesn't do the nightclub scene. I frequently felt like an outcast and a geekoid and a no-life loser. However, I've decided that was probably because of a) a low self-esteem, and b) a need for peer acceptance.
And just when I was at my lowest of lows, I actually made a few other friends, got a boyfriend, and started liking myself a little more. My self-esteem had a booster shot essentially. I started to realize that just because I don't do certain things that other people are doing, it doesn't mean I'm a loser. It just means I'm being myself. And if anyone doesn't like that, screw 'em. As Daria said, maybe I do miss out on stuff, but this attitude is what works for me now.

You don't need to drop your friends just because they drink and you don't. When I stopped drinking (I mean how much fun is it _really_ if you don't remember anything but hugging the bowl?), I declared myself the designated driver. The job had pros and cons... Biggest Con... I somehow found myself the guardian of my friends' virtue... In other words, it was my responsibility to keep my friends from taking off with some drunk guy they were too drunk to realize was only after one thing. On the other hand, the Pros were pretty good... I didn't have to pay for expensive drinks and drunk friends are great for springing for a Pepsi now and then, so I had more money and I got to watch drunk people try to dance and have intelligent conversations, etc... it was more amusing then most TV shows... <g>
Ah, well, if you've out-grown them... That's a different story.

I agre with you, Nicole. And getting really drunk is dangerous, too. Alcohol may help you lose control in harmlessly fun ways, but once you've lost control there's no guarantee that what happens to you will continue to be harmlessly fun.
That's quite aside from the direct physical danger. Alcohol in large enough quantities to get you stinking drunk is toxic, and I knew one person who came close to dying when she drank more than she realized.
Oh, and yes, you're neither "prissy" nor a "tart" ... :)
You must have wound up a "designated driver" a lot of times. Btw, I find most nightclubs fairly boring. I think you'd need to be drunk to enjoy most of them. I only like going to that sort of place if I'm with a lot of friends (in which case what I'm really enjoying is the company of my friends rather than the club) or if there's something else going on there that I find interesting.
Being online probably helped. You meet other people who share your beliefs, and realize that you aren't really alone.

It was the last final on Friday, the last day of finals week, and the party started at... well, as soon as the first person arrived with liquor, which was shortly before 8:00 AM. This final was at 1:00 PM. I don't remember writing what I wrote. (It was a character analysis of Gradgrind in Dickens' "Hard Times"). Afterward, when I read it, I was impressed. However, it was an experience I opted not to repeat. Mostly because the party didn't end until, oh, about 4:30 AM Saturday, and I had to be back for my State Certification practical exam in Emergency Medical Technician at 7:00 AM that morning. I learned that it's really easy to hear blood pressures when you're in that zone between exhaustion, intoxication, and hangover, that the revulsive effects of well done moulage of compound fractures, avulsed eyes and abdominal eviscerations is nicely enhanced by the slight nausea resulting therefrom, and by then my own blood pressure was at 72/48. I also note that MTV:UK skipped "Speedtrapped". Unless they show it next week. Or maybe they confused "The Making of Yellow Submarine" with "Speedtrapped".
If you like Downtown, do the show a very big favor and write MTV US and let them know that you like it. The show's up for renewal, and MTV isn't being very encouraging about renewing it. I happen to love the show, mostly because it reminds me of New York, and the lead character, Alex, is a bit of a dork. (And I appreciate that.)
Anyway, tape it anyway, just in case. (You know how MTV is...)

If I'm going to give MTV credit for anything, it's got to be for trying out new types of animation. I've only seen a few Downtown eps so far and I like it too. It seems to me that Downtown is just the type of animation that the MTV heads would want MTV to be known for, it's new, hip, edgy, and set in New York. What more could they ask for?
I'd be willing to bet that the MTV heads were quite surprised by the type of fans that Daria drew in. I can hear them now...
MTV head, "You mean that Daria is being talked about all over the internet by a bunch of brains? We can't have that! Brains are *not* our demographic target! Brains are careful about what they buy! We have to *do* something!".
Ain't that illogical. If they make a show about a brain they must expect to have that kind of audience. It fact it might have been the intention. Stupid people watch MTV anyway. Daria is the tool to increase MTV's audience to include intelligent ones. MSB

The question I keep asking: is it possible to create a believeable brainy character like Daria without BEING a brain yourself? There's too much stuff on Daria that rings true to life. This can't be merely research. Someone must have lived Daria's life, individually or collectively.

Hey, let's make Titanic sadder. Fenian terrorists put a bomb on board that's gonna go off if the ship drops below 20 knots. Then most of the passengers are machinegunned by the terrorists, but they forget about the DiCaprio character, who was a cook on the ship but was previously a Secret Service agent. In the course of the fight the ship crashes into the Brooklyn dock and breaks in half.

I will agree with you if you state that the theme from "Up Close and Personal", that Celine Dion song, has got to be the worst song ever recorded. Ugh, next to that piece of saccharine junk, Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" sounds like an outlaw-type song. My version of Dante's Hell is being shut inside a dark chamber with water dripping all over the place and me in a constant "cramp" state, having to listen to "Because You Loved Me" constantly.
Too disturbing. Think nice, happy thoughts now. Like taking a knife to Celine Dion and forcing her never to sing again unless she can pick some good stuff. Probably lock her in a room with Whitney Houston until Celine recants.
I think this is because those of us who don't inhabit the top income brackets see those people who do inhabit those brackets as being people without the everyday struggles we have to face...like decisions on which expenses take priority...cutting corners...bitching at the ever-rising prices of regularly purchased product like gasoline or soda or vegetables or something like that...living or seeing our parents live from paycheck to paycheck...having to save up for months in order to do something you really want to do...we see them not having to deal with this and it angers us to the core...especially since so many of them refuse to share the wealth with those who work even harder than they do to just get by...there are a few who do, but they're the exceptions to the rule. In fact, probably the main reason I'm not a Republican (aside from being pro-choice, liberal when it comes to civil rights, and pro-gun control) is because I know their economic policy only benefits the rich...take for example Ronald Reagan's "trickle down" economics, which was so laughably absurd...and "corporate welfare", which is even more laughably absurd...the rich do seem to get away with everything and it angers the rest of society...so the elixir we've discovered is the elixir of literature...we pour out of our hearts these stories where the rich get their comeuppance and the poor have their day...even though we know in the deep inside of our beings that not all rich people are evil...but we use literature to soothe our souls so we go forth anyway and write and write and the stories we create touch other people with the same feelings and so they become popular and soon they become classic....
(takes deep breath)
Wow. I had that in me for quite a long time. *whew* That feels good, spilling all that out. Nice.

To add to that, probably the greatest threat to an existing dictatorship is the freedom of expression. Underground newspapers, free-flowing flyers, and internet e-zines are just to name a few forms of such expression. Some deal with it with satirical plays and politically-motivated skits. A good example is "Accidental Death of an Anarchist" by Dario Fo, a play satirizing the corruption that inflicted the Italian police force at that time.
Simple things like these can spark revolution. This is why most tyrannical leaders are afraid of social criticism, and quickly imprison or threaten anyone who dares breathe a word that indicate anti-government leanings. The pen can truly be mightier than the sword when it comes to revealing the hypocrisies of authority figures, and even more so if it can bring down an entire corrupt government to its knees.

Ok, I'm going to have to respond. I hope this doesn't mess things up in our delightful little group. They say you should never discuss religion or politics. We've done one, I guess we're about to start on the other:

Ok, admit it: You're jealous. At least a little. You'd like to be rich and not have to worry about money. I would too. (Not by any standard could I be considered rich.) Being able to afford any toy, any extravagance, wallowing in a sinfully sybaritic lifestyle, Yeah, who wouldn't want that? Of course that isn't how most rich people live, but we can still fantasize.
they do to
the rule.
But they do share. They can't help it. If you have money there are only two things you can do with it--unless you simply stuff it in a mattress: You can save it or you can spend it.
If you spend it, on fast cars and fast women, or mansions and limos, you're spreading it around. Other people take the money you spend and they spend it too. There are plenty of people who make their livings on satisfying the whims of rich people. And they hire people to help them do the job. The money gets around, make no mistake.
If you save it that means investment. Put it in the bank and they lend it out to people who want it right now to build a house or buy a car. Put it in stocks and the company uses it to buy equipment, build factories, and hire people. The money gets around.
I'll observe that there's a high turnover among the rich. Today's Forbes 400 member can be tomorrow's welfare recipient and today's welfare recipient can be tomorrow's Forbes 400 member.
everything and it
I consider myself a Republican. Maybe it's because I'm from East Tennessee.
pro-choice: I can accept Roe v. Wade as a reasonable compromise to what must be the most heartbreaking decision a woman has to make vs. the rights of a potential voter. It hasn't made anyone happy so it must be the correct decision. Let's adjust the laws to comply with R v. W and quit fighting over it.
Civil rights: Republicans? The abolition party? It wasn't Republicans that rammed through Jim Crow. Eisenhower sent the national guard to Little Rock. How did Republicans ever get tarred as being anti-civil rights?
Gun-control: Ok, we'll just have to leave this one lying there. I just can't bring myself to agree to gun control.
Trickle Down economics: An unfortunate turn of phrase. In fact the Reagan tax cuts generated an increase in revenues. The Kennedy tax cuts generated an increase in revenues. That can mean only one thing: we're operating on the back side of the curve. Adam Smith noted 200 years ago that sometimes cutting tax rates generates higher revenues. Common sense would dictate that you set your tax rates where revenues are at a maxima. That means a tax cut is in order. To raise rates and accept lower revenues simply out of hatred of the rich is just stupid.
Corporate Welfare: This is nothing more than graft and corruption, an unavoidable consequence of placing so much power in the hands of government. When government has so much power to do things FOR you and so much power to do things TO you, it's only natural that rich individuals and rich corporations would pay for special favors. There are only two choices: either place only incorruptible individuals in government (and such a person doesn't exist) or reduce the incentive to cheat by eliminating governments ability to bestow its beneficence on those offering envelopes with currency inside.
Don't waste too much bile on the rich Diane. I sense that one day you're probably going to be rich. I suspect you have what it takes. When that day comes won't you feel just a little silly for having once held such anti-rich views? Just don't forget your poor friends from a.t.d.
Most people who become rich work very hard, to the point of having very little fun until after retirement. Their HEIRS are the ones who wallow in wealth (and often waste it, with the result that THEIR heirs are impoverished. "Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations", as the saying goes).
Probably because the Democrats were pro civil rights in the 60's, and a lot of people don't remember back any farther than that. Plus, being pro "affirmative action" has become seen as being pro "civil rights", even though AA is simply the latest technique for racial discrimination (this time against other victims, mostly poor white males).
Exactly.
Yes. Government intervention is and always will be mostly in favor of the rich, because they are the ones who can afford to buy politicians.
She will indeed. :)
Sincerely Yours, Jordan

Very true. We have Van Andel and De Vos grandkids by now here in Grand Rapids and they're not good for much. The first generation of course worked very hard making Amway... and whether you like it or not they did well and Grand Rapids owes a lot to them, since we're now on a list of places where bands go (Van Andel Arena), have a respectable hotel (Amway Grand Plaza), a museum, etc. We're on lists besides ones for the Russians to blow up (I didn't think we'd be that important. What, destroy the office furniture industry? But we have auto parts plants...)

Aaccck! Okay okay, let's get off the politics subject. I suddenly found myself disagreeing with quite a bit of what was said (especially the AA bit), and because I don't want a flame war to occur any time soon, let us all lay our political/religious differences aside okay? Peace? Harmony? Please?

As you prefer. However, we're Daria fans, we can disagree without being disagreeable--if you don't count sarcasm. And flame wars? We just don't DO that here.
So if you have an opinion go ahead and voice it. You needn't fear.
It's only when the subject of politics comes up that you realise that America and Europe really are on different sides of the planet, living in mutually incomprehensible worlds.
I've been avoiding responses to the responses I got from my post precisely because of that reason, Nicole dear.
To everyone else...I was just *venting*. No mention of a complete discounting of other people's opinions, just a sheer wish to project onto others my own opinions as far as the subject was concerned. Didn't mean for it to turn into a gigantic sociopolitical debate, most especially because my brain cannot possibly handle such things at this time, but also because it would polarize this newsgroup even more. I realize I'm different from a whole lot of you (probably the vast majority) but that should be it. I have a number of things I would *like* to say but that would show me to be even more different. And right now I can't handle stuff like that.

Ok, look: We can discuss ANYTHING here. You can vent, you can discuss, you can query, you can spill, you can bare your soul. We can deal with it. We're Daria fans. We're smart. We can deal with being different and we can deal with other people being different. That's part of being a Daria fan. And we're friends--or probably about the closest thing to it that you're likely to find online. And anyone is concerned about intolerance? For being different? In a Daria group? The only thing that won't be tolerated here is being unpleasant. I shouldn't have to remind y'all of this. Only by exploring our differences can we better appreciate our similarities.
So why not go ahead and discuss your politics, religion, literature, philosophy, and whatever other subjects interest you? We've done it before without polarizing the group. Browse the Deja archive if you don't believe me. Go ahead, tell us what you think. We can do it. Might as well, there's no Daria on--except reruns.
"Damn you different ones and your insidious logic."
Just a demented theory of mine, that you and the paperpusher are one in the same. Mild-mannered lawyer during the day, crazed Duran Duran freak by night... :)
Truth be told, from what I read, it seems to me that you already have a great deal of wealth in friends and life in general. You don't strike me as the type to be hung up on things.
Yeah, no telling...I mean, you totally forgot the whole "Japan (band) freak" part too.
Hee hee hee.
ObDaria: Don't have anything. But just wanted to do that because I'm always too late to participate in any on-topic discussions. That's why I get offtopic all the time. Not because I *want* to.
They face entirely different struggles. No one is without struggles. Life is suffering. Whoever said its not is probably trying to sell something.
So you're saying they don't face YOUR struggles which means they're not YOU. You're just forming an us vs. them mentality, you know, like is at the heart of sports rivalries. And wars. And genocide.
Well, as was pointed out-- if you're spending it you're sharing it. Burger King can pay $7 an hour for starting wage because they go through there and buy burgers. Meijer can employ TONS of baggers and cashiers because they buy groceries.
Not to mention the fact that well over half of the income of those in top brackets goes to Uncle Sam.
I don't know when civil rights became a liberal phenomenon. Certainly what passes for civil rights now, but what passes for civil rights now resembles more the old racist ideas than the ideals of people like Martin Luther King Jr.
Take adoption, for instance, since I was talking about this issue the other day with Jordan and then with my father. Thirty-five years ago adoption was the "last stronghold of racism" in terms of not allowing cross-racial adoptions. Over time, cross racial adoptions, however, became more normal (one Dutch family at my school has a black daughter and Asian son)... however, those who are in "civil rights" now claim black children should only be adopted by black parents because they believe not in integration, which civil rights in the 1960's was about, but of multiculturalism in terms of an increased SEPERATION of races as they try to find an identity based on background. So they have the same view as the racists.

For a topsy-turvy twist on the above, check out Clare Booth Luce's "The Women". Actually, it's the whole snooty attitude of the upper-class women in the play/film/whatever that really turned me off. In any film where you find yourself *rooting* for Joan Crawford's character, something is dreadfully wrong. %-{)>
